Exactly

This is why I get a good laugh when people say they had a few range sessions and 1 round of golf before giving up on clubs.

For me m, I’ve had 3 sets of irons in the last 15 years.  I played 4 drivers in 20 years. I've tinkered with putters, but only bought a few over the years.

I find that it takes some time to really dial certain clubs and once I've found ones that work and look good to my eye, I stick with them.

I see a trend that most good players at my club have clubs they've had for years.  And while not always the case, when I see guys with shiny new clubs,  most of them aren't very good...and they're usually playing the tips and shooting 90.

I get what you're saying, but I think for a lot of people there is just enjoyment in trying new things. It's not they think new stuff is going to make them better - to your point, there likely isn't time to get used to it.

We all enjoy different aspects of the game.  I used to buy/sell a lot of equipment when the pricing made it easy to flip clubs without taking a hit.  Now the pricing has gotten to the point where between shipping costs and an uneven secondary market, it costs a bit more to do.  And I finally moved over to the camp of getting fit for clubs and ordering what works. I still miss the excitement that a different club may bring or the idea that my whole bag could turn over in a year.

I got fit for most of my current set - so the plan is to keep them for awhile and see if I like this aspect of the game.

But like a lot of people who found their way to golf forums, it started in the constant search for a new club.

I just started after 10 yrs away from the game 🙂

Welcome back!  Thanks for driving up tee time demand and green fee pricing, lol!

Just kidding.  But if I had a $1 for everyone I've been paired with who's said 'they just came back to the game....' 🙂

I've slowed way down, but I'm a tester by trade so I like to try new stuff. Lefty gear isn't often available for demo, so I gotta buy stuff. My bag has been pretty set for a couple years, but there are clubs that float in and out all the time.

But yeah, 5-6 clubs a year vs 5 sets of irons in 6 months.

Im a lefty and yes, we often have to buy crap to even try it out.  Im lucky to have Miles of Golf near me who is nice enough to allow me to hit pretty much anything LH that I want.

I'll never tell anyone what they should or shouldn't be doing when it comes to golf equipment.

If buying new clubs makes people happy, then go for it.

Golf is supposed to be fun. If having new clubs brings people joy from the game then by all means have at it.

I just wish more players had a more realistic view of their games. By that, I mean having shiny new clubs and playing from the tips doesn't make you a better player. I'm fact I think so many players could benefit from swallowing their egos and playing the forward tees, not trying to play clubs they just can't hit well and not taking themselves so seriously.

Played behind a foursome Sunday that were soooo slow. All 4 playing from the tips. Spraying the ball all over the place. Grinding over each shot. Shooting the flag multiple times, throwing grass up to check the wind, then chunking it 10 ft. Marking 2 footers for 8s. Throwing clubs because they hit bad shots. We were a 2some and had to watch this for hours.

Have fun playing, but just have a bit of golf etiquette.

Might seem a bit off topic, but there does seem to be a correlation between people who care more about having new equipment and looking the part and having zero understanding of whats going on around them.

I know this probably doesn't pertain to WRXers who all stripe it 300 off the tee, but for all the rest of the golfers I see in real life who's reality might be slightly different than their actual abilities.

Not me.

I've recently started collecting older Scotty Cameron putters. Bought a rack to display them, and now I need another. I do play with them as well. It's a hobby, not an addiction.

Compared to others here, I don't have it too bad. Compared to all my golfing buddies, I'm probably the worst ho. 4th year in a row new irons. New driver in 21, 22 and 23 (we'll see about 24). New wedges probably 3 times in the last 4 years. I've just gotten to the point in my work career where "wasting" $1-2k (I typically sell my old stuff right away while it's still worth something) per year on golf clubs doesn't really hurt. That said, there's no improvement. Or the improvement is sooooo tiny that it doesn't change my score at all. For all of us that shoot above par golf is still about just minimizing the bad shots. I haven't found a golf club yet that prevents me from spraying it 20 yards right OB or hitting 2-3 inches behind the ball and chunking it 20 yards short. I think I could shoot the same scores with equipment 10-20 years old provided I could find a driver that gave me reasonably good launch and spin.

edit/P.S.: that said, I do enjoy shopping for new stuff and putting new stuff into play. It's interesting and helps get the juices flowing in Feb-Mar after a few months off for winter.

Always looking to add something into the mix that might be "new to me" via Ebay or used sporting goods stores, etc. But unfortunately, the clubs I keep adding back in are always ones that I owned several years ago and regret having sold or traded! So definitely nothing really new but often something that I look at and remember, Ohh that one felt really good once upon a time! So just like the guy pushing the rock up the hill I guess I'm condemned to repeating or at least trying to correct my past dumb decisions where newer was definitely NOT better!

I'm stopping as soon as my 245s get here (according to Mizuno, tomorrow).

Seriously.

I'm stopping.

I absolutely mean it.

Doesn't matter if Titleist releases new drivers and FWs this summer. Will close my eyes put my fingers in my ears and go lalalalalalalalala.

15 years ago I was going through clubs on a weekly basis. Today, I might buy 1 golf club every 1-2 years. I bought a tour W 52 for $10 the other day.  I was looking at my bag and realized I've had my g400 max for like 6 or 7 seasons now. It has not even crossed my mind to buy a new one. I play 10 or less rounds a year and have more fun now than ever on the course. Who else has all but stopped buying clubs?

Your WRX Card should be pulled..... 😉

Ugh. I know what that's like.  I hate to sound like old man (especially being in my early 50s), but it seems common with a certain sect of younger golfers. I got paired with 3 guys (2 friends and another single) on Sunday. All of them were under 35 and said they picked up golf during the pandemic. They were nice enough guys - but had absolutely zero clue about general golf etiquette or the rhythm in playing as a group.

* Driving point to point instead of dropping a player off at their ball and driving to the other ball.

* Driving a cart within 40 yards of the green (and parking right next to it in the fringe)

* Letting the player who's away putt first

* Marking you ball...especially when it's in someone else's line

* Talking while other players are addressing the ball

* Wasting time leaving a hole and arriving to a new hole. We were playing ready golf. We'd get to a hole and they were all messing around on their phones.  I'd get out, hit a drive and they'd still be on their phone

* The acted like Scotty beamed them on the course when it was time to hit an approach shot. They'd wait until it was their turn to get out of the cart, get yardage, check the wind, pick a club

* Forget about fixing a pitchmark

We were a hole plus behind by the back nine. I tried to gently encourage us to keep pace. But their attitude was 'we spent our $90 and Saturday is for the boys.'

Between that and 'came back to the game guy' (no offense to any of them), you get to enjoy 5+ hour rounds and pay 30-50% more for weekend green fees than we did before than pandemic

I can't walk past a set of used clubs if they are a good deal and in good shape..............there's just no way!

Gotta have em!  😉

I've been a real "HO" over the past 6 months.  Since last fall I've had Titleist T100's, TM R7's, Hogan Edge Pro's, Ping G5's, Ping G425's in the bag.

I now have a mint set of Ping i5's.

Club building and tinkering has always been a hobby of mine while in search for the Holy Grail.

Nailed it!

And these younger guys in LaLa land on their phones, never look back and think they should let the 2 some behind them play thru.

I think it's part ignorance and part attitude.

Well I’ve changed every club in my bag with a full fitting bar one in the last 12 months, so I doubt I’ll be buying any this year. Will need new wedges start of next year but that’s it. It’s cost a lot of money but it works out cheaper than continually changing.

Before I dropped out 8-ish years ago I was often on the hunt for new stuff and spent more money than I probably should have - part of those bad life decisions I talked about in my "I'm back" post last summer. Even then I found equipment prices to be crazy. Flash forward to 2024 and it's positively eye-watering. $800-$1000 for a driver??  Non Merci! Respect and admiration for folks that have the means to drop that kind of coin, but I just can't lol ... If I do get the itch to tinker, I'll be looking in the second hand bins!

Now off to Google to find that Hoing.com OP was talking about ... 😆

Cheers everyone ...

Well,  I have been trying everything out there and had lots of fun doing it for many years. Finally have figured out some combinations that work and will be sticking with it for the summer at least as getting closer to scratch.

Now I know I have problem since I have the clubs figured out, I have bought four pairs of shoes, two bags and more clothes in the last month gearing for the season. Same rush for new gear and yes I have a problem but the daydreaming golf at work makes it go faster!
