Looking to go graphite in irons. MMT from Modus 120??

Recommended Posts

I've read threads on here and got some good info. But I'm wondering if anyone can help me with the jump I'm looking to make. I play 923 Forged with Modus 120S. Shaft specs say they weigh 114 grams. I like them, but I'd like to try to move to graphite for ease on my body as I get older. I see the MMT 105TX is 113 grams. Would this be a relatively seamless switch because of the weight similarity? I have a Cobra 2H with an MMT 80x shaft and I like it. SS with 7i is 88-90 and I sometimes have a bit of an aggressive transition, if that helps with info. There's no shop near me that I can demo them, so I'm buying blind. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you!!

Jmho but you can't compare steel to graphite based on weight. MMT 105TX although about same weight will play way stiffer

Thank you. Would the MMT 105S be closer to the same as the Modus 120? They weigh 105, I believe. I could probably have them built to same swing weight, maybe?

The MMT Stiff would be a closer match.

Yep, and the 105 stiff are plenty stable in their own right, while swing-weighting quite normally. Great shafts. The 105 TX is quite stiff and would likely be too much coming from Modus 120 S.

Modus 120 Stiff has a profile that's almost identical to DG regular flex, albeit 10+ grams lighter.  The MMT 105 stiff is going to be a flex stiffer.

As Brother Stuart_G is fond of pointing out, for many or even most, weight is more important than flex.

That said, the only way you'll know if it would work for you is to try them.  It seems like it has a good chance to be so based on your speed and 2H shaft, but that's not always as perfect an indicator as we'd like.

Yeah, real helpful, so far.  Adding a couple points from personal experience...  I've always needed heavy clubs, until the last few years as I've aged (now 60).  Flex has also been important to me over the years, though I've found it to be less of an issue with irons now than I did when I could still bring some speed; I've dropped to DGR/Modus 120S territory, but find no real issue using NV95 stiff in irons.

What I've done in these circumstances is build a test club with the shaft in question.  It may seem expensive, but its a lot cheaper than refitting your entire set and having it not work out.  😉

(Personal opinion, obviously)

The modern graphite iron shaft world is amazing, but it can also be a bit much to take in, with so many options.  Knowing your preferences with previous iron shafts and learning the overall characteristics in graphite can be a good starting point.

Funny, I just did that. Ordered a P7MC 6i with the MMT 105s. I was thinking of reshafting the set that have kbs tour s.

Just wanted to see if graphite can reduce some wear and tear on my joints. I’ve only hit it once so far, but it felt good.

Exactly what I'm hoping for. I own a construction company, and although I don't do much physical stuff anymore, years of swinging a hammer has taken its toll. As I semi retire and play 5 days a week, I'm definitely gonna need something friendly on the joints😂

It will absolutely reduce wear and tear. I barely feel any discomfort after a round with the MMT 105. Can play rounds several days in a row without any pain. And I am over 50 so no spring chicken. This is contrasted with major shoulder and elbow problems in my 30s and early 40s before I switched to graphite. No reason to put it off.

And profiles aside, the MMT 105 are an easy transition IMHO for anyone that has played KBS Tour, Modus 105, True Temper 105, DG 105, or other steel shafts in that 105-110g range. Same with the Recoil Dart 105, and I assume the Axiom 105.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone noticed on the downswing they can feel the exaggerated long stiff tip section of the  modus 120 and it makes swinging feel a bit weird and unstable? Idk maybe it's club I demod on the srixon which had gigantic sole and moved a lot of head weight to the bottom.

I would guess what you're feeling is not the tip, but rather the softer section above that tip.  Modus 120 are a fairly soft-mid shaft.

The EI graph of the Modus is a reasonable illustration of this.  There's a dip in the curve in the lower mid, showing how it gets softer.

Ok guys. I'm in the fitting bay. No MMT but they do have steelfiber. I hit the i95S and i110cw stiff. I like them both but I like the 110 a little better. Would MMT 105S be relatively close to one of these? MMT are no upcharge. Thank you!!

I have played all of those extensively. If you play the Modus 120 now, were looking to go with MMT 105, and prefer the i110, then you should be fine with the MMT 105.

I too prefer the i110 over the i95. And that fits with my general wheelhouse of shafts in the 105-110g range.

Hard for any of us to say with certainty whether you will like a certain shaft or not, but the MMT 105S plays similar to the i110S in my opinion, while being a bit softer and smoother than the i110S so to speak. The MMT 105S is an outstanding shaft, plain and simple. Good luck.

Imo no. Many wouldn't agree with this, but to me MMT have a stiff butt, softish middle and stiffen up by the tip where they add more material to bring up swing weights. Classic steelfiber is more linear throughout with no obvious softer spot anywhere.

It's interesting that MMT 125 TX was said to be modeled after DGX100, but the EI graph from Russ Ryden, as well as his narrative, suggest the MMT may be closer to a Blueboard type profile

You'll get varied opinions.

Shaft weight similarities are NOT a good measure.  Modus 120S "feels" soft to me while MMT 105TX and MMT 125TX are stout.   I have the latter in a few wedges and played MMT 125S for 2+yrs in 620 MBs.  MMT 105S, though lighter weight, does not feel the same as other steel shafts in similar range.  MMT TX flex is real.

IME The difference is MMT won't have as much wear on your body as any steel shaft, including 114g Modus 120S.  I have an aggressive swing/tempo, hitter of the ball, and iron SS is 85+/-.  I am using MMT 85S in 3i-5i and MMT 105S in 6i-9i, with MMT 105S scoring wedge (113g) in PW, in new weaker lofted T100 heads, and a very stout high-bend Tensei AV White Am2, 90S in 17' 2 iron.

The 118 ball speed pic was 923 Forged (which is what I have) with SteelFiber i110. The 120 ball speed is with a used set of T150 they had that actually had MMT 105s in them. So I did get to try the MMT after all. Lofts are 2* weaker on T150 and swingweight was 2 points lower than what I play, but at least I got to feel the shaft. They felt similar to me other than the Titleist felt a little lighter. It was actually a few hundred bucks cheaper to just order a new set of 923 Forged and trade in my "old" set, than it would be to buy new shafts, grips and installation. So, long story short, I ordered new 923 Forged with MMT 105S. Thank you guys again!!!

MMT 105S is a solid choice, I really like them.  The next challenge is being patient with the new club process.  Many people get fitted, order new clubs, and a few months later they are frustrated because expectations are not being met.

Good luck with your new clubs.

@JD3 LOL you're kind of right.  I agree, MMT has a stiff butt section, also tip section.  But also having played SF for 2yrs, disagree with the linear description.  Steelfiber is behind my switch from PX 6.0 to SF i110cw S, in 2i-PW, and i125cw S in wedges for 2yrs before switching to MMT 125S in 620 MBs.

To further clarify, the added 304 stainless-steel metal-mesh in the lower third shaft section not only helps swing weighting, but increases feel of the tip section, allowing tips to talk to my hands similar to steel shafts.  Less wear and tear is nice too, however the butt and tip sections are the major reason I play MMT, and Tensei, and even more stout iron shaft.

Ok I'll defer to you as I never took a SF on the course, just in a hitting bay. Iirc its steel equivalent was like a PX for butt and mid stiffness, but without the little "pop" at the bottom, so more like an $-Taper.

Was going to respond to this earlier, but...  oh look!  a squirrel!

Personally, I always felt DGR was pretty soft mid, but that was when I was moving the ball more than I am now.  A buddy had me hit an MP30 that he'd borrowed as a demo, with DGR, which I hit absurdly high.

I won't discount that I may feel differently now.  LOL

FWIW, here's the profile data of the two shafts:

Last I checked the tapered MMT, which is what the 105 is, had to be special ordered at GolfWorks. Amazon has them in limited quantities, though.
