What’s with taking your hat off?

I don’t do it. I find it odd, awkward, and affected. I also do not want one more thing to hold on to. If it is part of your routine, cool, do your thing, but under no circumstances am I going to think you are rude if you don’t take your hat off!

A couple people in our group (of about 25 people) take the hat off every time. It’s apparently important to them. So when they are in my group, I follow suit. If they aren’t in the group, no one else takes their’s off. I’m not going to initiate it since I really don’t care. More important things to concern myself with.

Yep, kind of a “when in Rome” thing for me.

I will say at our annual holiday dinner in December I was surprised that wearing ball caps to a very nice dinner at a very nice venue has become more of a “thing” for some of the younger guys - didn’t say anything but will be having a quiet word with a couple department heads and see what’s up with that and how much I care come end of the year. Probably will let it lie, but got a lot of comments, lol.

I've also been to UK several times and many of the clubhouses have a "no hats inside" rule...

I cannot recall having seen such signs around here, men know that without having to tell them.

One of our former club captains was very particular about not wearing hats indoors and he used to finish his club letters with words "hat off inside and greeting others" or something like that.

Let me guess, you do not open doors for women, do you..?

Back in the 40s/50s/60s, some of us were raised in homes and parochial schools where manners and uniforms were of the utmost importance.  Golf and at clubs, church and civic/government activities, it's common to remove one's hat and gloves, however, hanging out in the local beer bar, wearing a hoodie, with your pants sagging to your ankles, not so much.

Seen properly dressed, playing by the rules, exhibiting manners and self-control can surprisingly be grounds for invites that otherwise won't happen.

I totally get that little things like whether you take your hat off indoors or when you greet someone in and of themselves are not that big a deal. And I am not trying to be critical of those who choose not to or do not see the value. But if you are in that camp hear me out. Sometimes how we act in the little things develops character and can lay a foundation on how we act in the big things of life. Consider this:

Oh hell, I even open doors for men.  It's a common courtesy.

I still hold doors for other men as I tend to see them do as well, and never has it been an issue. I still hold doors for older women most places I go but depending on what city I'm in I absolutely do not for women in general. It's idiotic out there the issues being polite to strangers can cause you these days, but if you enjoy calm in your life you'll be aware of the reality no matter how absurd it is.

Pretty much never a problem at the golf course, but in most public settings it's just not worth chancing or dealing with the headaches.

Surprised the staff didn't say anything. Most nicer settings where it's a thing they'll speak up. Again, all in the setting though. Not unusual at all when out west to go somewhere very nice in all regards with very little in the way of dress code.

At my companies holiday dinner at a very nice venue the issue was wearing jeans and sneakers by the younger crowd. Management posted the following year no jeans allowed. I thought the younger crowd showing up wearing dress pants and sneakers was a bit tacky. The memo said no jeans and nothing about footwear.

The company now has their holiday dinner at a brewery where you can wear whatever you want. I miss the salmon stuffed with crab meat. Selecting something off of a food truck is a real treat.

I’ll bet you $500 he does!

A more solid lock of a bet you’d never find. The women in my office used to get mad at me because I wouldn’t let them hold the door for me.  Now they just accept it. And if men are following closely, I’ll hold it for them as well.

I just don’t see holding the door for someone in the same light as hats off after a round of golf. The difference is, I wont slight someone because they do.

Wow.... I have never ever had any issues with any stranger I have been polite to. We must live in very different societies.

Consider yourself blessed. Don't have to look far to come across the craziness. There very much are people who will get offended at you holding the door for them these days. Heck, there are parents being arrested for walking their kids home from school or letting them play in the back yard. Kind of wild that as the world becomes a safer, more hospitable place on the whole people in the most developed societies are finding new things to be offended about but it is what it is.
