Wedge shaft to compliment MMT 105S iron shafts

Any MMT 105S users out there? I've got a set of 923 Forged 5-GW coming, and it's my first venture into graphite iron shafts. Any advice on complimentary wedge shafts? Wedges will be Mizuno S23/T24. Maybe 125S soft stepped? Or 105TX soft stepped?

MMT Scoring Wedge shafts are FANTASTIC!  105s is really about 114g so swingweight of the 300g wedge head isn't a problem.

I also have a gap wedge with an MMT 105TX soft stepped once and I like it too, but the Scoring wedge shaft keeps the ball flght down a little better.

Thank you! This is interesting. I thought I read that the scoring wedge was designed for more height and spin. I must have misread that. The idea of bringing the flight down sounds fantastic. My irons shipped Thursday from GA, so I should have them Monday or Tuesday. I'm chomping at the bit to give my first foray into graphite a go. I can't wait!!

MMT scoring wedge shaft would be a good compliment.  They are softer in the tip compared to MMT to promote more spin.

Don't bet the farm on this but I believe the scoring wedges have reinforced butt and tip to keep weight up but softer middle for feel. Should still maintain launch and spin characteristics of their respective weight class, eg. 105,125 etc.

They do have a hefty upcharge. I was looking at some Cally wedges with them and it was $75 upcharge in the Jaws Raw.

Good to know. Thank you!! That sounds about right for cost. I was going to install them myself, so I wouldn't have to wait so long. They're $75 at Grips4Less.

105S is 105g per the Mitsubishi site.  105TX is 113g.

I suggest you stay around 120g with your search.  In graphite/MMT, I would suggest 105 Scoring Wedge in TX flex (117g) or 125 Taper in Stiff flex (124g).  The MMT 105 Scoring Wedge is a great shaft, especially for finesse shots around the green.  However if you use your wedge for full shots it does have a lot of play/give to it, so my suggestion is to go up in flex/weight if you use it for full shots.

If you want to go with steel, don't think it gets much better than DG120.

Good luck

LB,

Have there been multiple versions of the scoring wedge shaft over the years or something?  I ask because mine do not have the "give/play" you speak of in S flex. All of my other clubs are X flex or TX in the irons, so I would think I could notice. Typically pros and top amateurs go down a flex, not up a flex in wedges. My 4 wedge heads that these shafts are attached to are 298.7-304.3g each and have midsize 50g+ grips on them.

In the past with steel, I've had some success with doing the 8 iron shaft in a wedge trick. My last set was Modus 120S, with 120X 8 iron shafts in my wedges. I definitely want to get away from steel completely. I thought about doing the same in graphite, but I haven't come across any info saying if it's the same idea or not.

One of the things LB says is correct for sure.  This "SW" shaft in stiff would benefit from being 5g heavier just for swingweight purposes, but I did not want to get a TX flex wedge shaft and not be able to make the short shots do what they are supposed to.

I prefer wedges to be around D4-D5 and these are D7, it is not a huge difference and nothing a heavier grip or some lead tape can't fix, but he does have a point. Performance so far has been what I expected, I am not hitting wild uncontrolled or higher flighted wedge shots, and these accomplished the feel I was looking for. If anything, my ball flight came down a bit on 3/4 and full swing shots but as we all know, how we each deliver the club can be different

I like these and would buy them again, but will bow out of the conversation from here in case others have different results.  Best of luck!!!

Edit: I did buy one TX flex MMT that is not a scoring wedge shaft, it is soft stepped once and have a 48* wedge installed.  It is not a lower ball flight for me than the Scoring Wedge Shaft in S

I have MMT 125S in my irons. My non-matched gap wedge has a Modus 105S and I’ve left it as is. My main reason for using graphite is shock absorption and I don’t hit enough full out gap wedges to do any further joint damage.

I'm not a big partial swing player. I generally prefer taking full swings with every club down to my 58. Unless it's within 90 yards or so, obviously. I try not to leave myself in positions where I'm 40-80 yards away from the green if I can help it, unless I can play a bump and run. The bump and run would almost always be with my 8 iron.

I’m not sure about multiple versions.

I agree that top players usually go a little lighter in Wedge shaft for more feel.  But I believe this a good protocol for players using standard 120-130g shafts.  If you are using lighter weight shafts 95-105g I don’t think it is as prevalent, especially for control.

I play MMT 95 in my irons.  I went to MMT SW 105 in the Gap Wedge as a transitional shaft to my SW/LW with DG 120.  I thought the MMT SW played a little softer than I like for full shots.  It might just be where the “softness” is built into this shaft.  I put a regular Taper Tip MMT 105 in it and like it just fine.

Best of luck

LB

The 8i shaft in a wedge isn't a steel specific idea, it will work with graphite as well.  Provided you're staying in the same model and/or bend profile.

I have sets of wedges with the MMT Scoring Wedge shafts, and a set of wedges with the MMT 105 TX (ss1x). I would say the shafts play similarly, and would not hesitate to recommend going with whatever of these you might prefer or have better access to. Both shafts work great in wedges to complement the MMT 105 in irons.

IIRC, when I ordered my custom MG4 wedges from TM recently, they did not have the Scoring Wedge shaft, but did have the 105 TX. I believe Callaway had both as a custom option. YMMV.

Great info! Thank you! I've always gravitated to Mizuno and Cleveland wedges. Both seem to take awhile for customization. They have 105 Scoring Wedges in stock at Grips4Less. I'll probably grab a few and just pop them in myself. Admittedly, patience isn't my biggest virtue when it comes to golf clubs😂

I'm potentially going to be changing my wedge shafts to graphite. Currently playing Modus Wedge 115 (122g) which are great but I got the itch to try something new. If/when I pull the trigger, I'll be going with two 8i MMT 125TX's for my 56 and 60. I'll report back with how it goes but should be good.

Any update on this?  Or anyone else?  I’m currently moving to 105tx in irons and debating either giving the scoring wedge a try or doing 8i 125tx in 55 & 60.
