Ivy to Pro - golf next???

I actually think part of the reason some good athletes go to Ivy League schools is that they or their parents don’t think they can make it on the professional stage.

"Dear boy, you go chase your dreams. If (insert sport) is what your heart truly desires, then your dad and I support you 100%. If Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Alabama or Tennessee are the places where you can chase your dreams, then you go for it and forget the IVY's. We got your back and love you no matter what school you choose. Its your life and all that matters is you love what you do."

The above is an almost never spoken conversation in an Asian household. Some may say it has taken place, but noone has actually heard those words or words to that effect.🤣

I am not sure about that.  I think parents want to give their kids the optionality.  If you become a pro awesome and if not, you have a degree from Princeton, Yale...

With one choice (IVY) you will need to work a lot harder to become a golfer and with another choice you will need to work a lot harder (to get a comparable job)  if you don't become a golfer..

It is about choices and keeping options open. There are very few schools that provide the balance (academics/golf) that some kids/parents might desire.

My son played in an amateur who was a 4 year starter/regular at the top college golf program in US. Many consider it a top academic program. After graduating, he tried going pro for a couple of years & then tried the business world - yet he still couldn’t get into a decent business school. He shared that although he loved his 4 years of college golf, he regretted not going to an Ivy. My 14 year old son (at that time) paid attention.

Btw, my take is that he didn’t network enough in college & also didn’t study enough to get good grades. If he took the same approach at an Ivy, he would still underperform vs his peers. Although he might get some extra doors opened, he wouldn’t get the silver bullet that many think comes automatically with the degree.

If you don't mind sharing.  "Which top college program ?" did the amateur attend.

I appreciated the coaches candor during my sons recruiting process but the fact of the matter is that the team is not geared in trying to develop kids who would like to play professional golf.

We’ve never heard of a single Ivy coach saying “don’t come here if you want to go pro.” That said, most of the recruits are smart enough to know the difference between taking easy classes & preparing for 11-14 tournaments a year vs going Ivies & missing a maximum of 17 days of classes per year.

As many know, the last Ivy guy who made legit PGA money is now the #2 coach at Duke - and it’s not clear the secrets to his success (from 20 years ago & whether he can help make this happen for his current players). In other words, is it the college that makes the player or is it in spite of the college?

The best feel good stories are the two Cal Bears (Morikawa & Homa) who finished Top 3 killed it at the Masters - and also Ben An who finished 16th. They did not have the best facilities but they made it work.

The other program that is special a feel good is Northwestern & Coach Goss - probably the best training & fitness program out there (Does any other golf team use aura & have the personal trainer travel w the team?). They do not have the best weather but they have a serious indoor facility & training imo. After all, how many successful PGA pros still go back to their college coaches for golf tune ups?

UNC.

UNC is a solid school but their top athletes will have a challenging time being a peak performer in/out of the classroom & they will NOT take the same classes or have the same education as rest of the students.

Note: this is not a criticism, only that something has to give. After all, Tiger didn’t take the same challenging courses at Stanford that the other non-athlete took.

Whether Bob Heintz made legit PGA tour money or not is definitely up for debate. Assuming he did, he wasn't the "last," as there's been no other. Below is his take on IVY golf and ACC golf. He was being asked his reasoning for leaving his position as Penn head coach and taking up the assistant's role at Duke. Apparently the "jock" in him wanted a more "competitive" golf environment.

and yet he wanted the head coaching job at his alma mater (which he did not get)

I think it calls into question the "competitiveness" reason of why he left Ivy HC job in the first place for ACC AC job if he were trying to get another Ivy HC job again

The low competitiveness of IVY golf or to a lesser degree IVY sports is already established for all to see. There's no point discussing that.

What Heintz' motivations are with his alma mater are less clear. Whether he's being genuine in his statement or not doesn't change the fact that IVY golfers suck for the most part.🤣

Is this centered around the self purported 180 mph ball speed kid that Princeton or Penn recruited?🤣 He hasn't played since being recruited.

Come to think of it, the other high ranked kid recruited by the same school seems to have pulled out of this week's AJGA. Not enough strength of field/CCA cushion?🤔😅

Some IVY bound golfers may not want the smoke it seems...

I don’t think it makes any sense for someone who is seriously considering a professional golf career and has the infrastructure to actually make it to go to an Ivy League school unless they are OK losing a year or two.  If my son or daughter wanted nothing other than become a golf pro at a young age, I would recommend either turning pro after high school or going to a school that is as easy as possible.

As I said in an earlier post, a lot of the strengthening of Ivy League golf teams is that people go there thinking they won’t make it as a golf professional on tour.

Some people wind up still trying to become professionals because they don’t get a good job offer despite going to an Ivy League school.

I agree with this - if you know you want to go pro and are good enough, why bother going to a school that doesn't singularly help you make progress towards that objective.  Or why even go to college at all?  Should Miles Russell turn pro when he turns 18?

Unfortunately 99% of college golfers don't make it, and a high % of those who think they are good enough actually aren't.  So what is a reasonable middle ground?

Go one year to somewhere academically decent and then drop out to pursue full time the chance of a pro career. If things don't work out, go back and finish the degree. Is this possible?

https://www.wsj.com/sports/tennis/columbia-university-ncaa-tournament-22e588e4

"Endelman, now the head coach of the men’s team, has led Columbia to the NCAA tournament’s Elite Eight for the first time in school history and a showdown with No. 1 seed Ohio State.

....

From the start, Endelman told anyone who would listen that he thought Columbia could be a top-25 team. They all looked at him like he’d suggested eliminating backhands. Ivy League schools hardly cracked even the top-50 at the time.

Patrick McEnroe, the former U.S. Davis Cup captain, had known Endelman since they played together on the junior circuit. Back then, Columbia was hardly a destination for aspiring pros.

“You didn’t even think about going to an Ivy League school,” McEnroe said.

Endelman believed that in a small sport like tennis, which requires just a handful of the right kids, it was possible for an Ivy to be a consistent winner."
