TM Spider Tour S counterbalance

Minarets

Recommended Posts

Anyone?  I haven’t been able to find much of anything on it other than it was the last of the spider tour release.  Can’t find many thought or reviews.

I haven’t paid much attention to Taylor made putters in quite some time. Used the original spider and the original ghost spider years and years ago. Haven’t been back in quite a while. I have been enamored with my Lab DF 2.1 for quite some time and dipped my toe into an Odyssey 7 Bird that I liked quite a bit, but happened upon this particular spider in the store other day and quickly fell in love

It’s a nice counterbalanced option. They’ve actually got two versions - the first one being a standard size Spider Tour head that’s a CB at 38 inches and the second being the Spider Tour S, which is a larger head.

The Spider Tour CB went entirely under the radar. I’m actually shocked Trottie didn’t do a video on it when I launched. They now have a 35 and 38 inch model available in the Tour S. The 35 performs the same as the 38 but is an option for shorter players who can’t use a 38 inch putter without it getting tied up in their shirt.

If you love the Pure Roll insert and want something extremely stable, get a CB version. The standard size head is available through PGATSS. You can pretty much find the Tour S CB anywhere.

i do not care for the 38 and 39” options in most counterbalance options.  I am even unsure really of what CB really accomplishes.  I mean I know the weighting goes in the grip but I would think the more weight in the head the better off most all of us should be.  That said, this tour S with the 35” CB grip felt great. I always like to choke down on those short putts and this allows for that.

I wanted to like the jailbird but couldn’t do the 39 shaft. Then when the mini came out, couldn't wait but wasnt really for me once I tried it. I liked the look tho.
just happened on this but was really enjoying the pure roll face which had seemed different to me over the years.  Some very hard and some softer.  This one seems softer but not soft. No clue how I would do on real greens from long distance.  Always a crap shoot when getting out of a store’s fake greens to the real thing.

I picked up a Tour S CB at 38 a few weeks ago at a Golf Galaxy in Dallas, they had about 5 or 6 in stock.  So far I like it quite a bit, very stable.   I guess I didn't realize there were 2 CB versions, it was the first time I'd seen either in person.

I've been toying with the Mid-length putters for about 9 months, I converted an old Bettinardi Inovai 5.0 first to 39 inches, worked pretty well after I added a bunch of lead tape to the head, but it has a very soft face due to the milling I'm not crazy about.  I had a guy make up a Maltby PTM-5CS last fall at 39 inches, its a very heavy head, and I was very streaky with it, but I liked the milled face.

Next tried a LAB Mezz Max CB at 39 inches, its a learning curve to be sure, sometimes it feels great, other times it feels like I can't make anything. Oddly, I seem to close the face on it a lot, that shouldn't happen I thought with the LAB putters...

The Spider Tour S CB puts a very nice roll on the ball, I played a Spider GTX CS last year with pretty good success, my biggest gripe was speed control on long putts, something so far I might struggle with on the CB putter as well.  Not sure if its the face/milling or what with the spiders for me.   Feels good from short and mid length for sure tho.

I’ve always liked those long counterbalanced grips but never tried one in actual practice.  Just in store on random putters.  Never liked a 39 or 38 putter.  Just doesn’t fit my stroke. Love having a 35 with that grip.  Got out to the practice green today.  Traded in my white hot OG 7 bird that I liked quite a bit but after last round with it where I felt like I had completely lost the stability in my stroke I ditched it.  I’ve been using my Lab DF2.1 for so long now, going back to a “normal” putter like the 7 bird was kinda hard and felt like I had to manipulate it too much.

after the practice screen today with the spider, it just felt really solid. I really enjoyed the pure roll face.

Is there any info available on the counterbalance? I have a 35" Spider Tour S and took the SuperStroke Tech port off but they don't use a SuperStroke weight. There is foam or something inside the shaft. Is there a weight in there? how heavy?

After 2 weeks of owning this and playing most slow greens because of wet weather I have been stalking GG website ready to trade it in on a DF3.  Almost bought one in Charlotte and flew home with it on the plane with me.  The last 3 rounds with the Spider have been fabulous.  The greens are finally back to be “normal” around here for the golf season.  It’s warm and they are getting faster.  I played with them on one of the fasted greens I’ve ever played, and 2 others on what I would consider faster than average for the summer and had just great success.  It’s like it knows it’s on the chopping block.  I have been missing greens like crazy with my approaches and have been having to hole putts from inside 10’ regularly to save par and it’s doing so more than not.  I feel super confident right now the ball is going where I want and I will get the speed from the pureroll face that I’m looking for.  Love this thing (right now).

I'm playing larger head Tour S at 37". Really nice putter, easy to line up and distance control has been really good for me.

I've been messing with counterbalancing putters for ages, first with DIY hacks and later using the SuperStroke weights. I like the feeling of having some mass at the grip end and feel like it stabilizes my stroke.

I've been using the longer CB Spider Tour S all season. Having the longer shaft with the weight placed even higher seems to only enhance these advantages.

I use a normal LHL grip and just let the extra couple inches of shaft exist above my hands. I try to sort of lock my trail wrist as I take my grip by putting some thumb pressure on the flat top of the grip. I had the putter bent to a slightly flatter angle to match my fitting specs from a few years ago.

Distance control seems very intuitive or at least matches what my eyes take in very well. I'm rarely very short or very long with this one. Short putts feel stable and the sweet spot seems huge compared to solid-headed putters I've used.

This putter has been great for me.  I’m still loving it.   I was so ready to dump it for a DF3 but now can’t imagine doing so.  Even though I’d love to have one of those, I couldn’t give up the TM spider CS.

short putts are more consistent. Speed has been good.  Longer putts have been very good.  👍

Hello,

traded in my 38” phantom cb , that I had for 2 weeks, because it would catch on my shirt from time to time so I was distracted with that but loved the feel . Didn’t know the Spider CB existed . Thinking of getting the 38” and cutting it down to 36 but the 35” may work . I am 5’10” would mind terrible if I ask how tall you are and what length putter did you normally use before the spider cb ?  Thanks

I am 6’0”.  I have usually used 34” putter for last 10 years.  This is first 35” for me in a long time.  I quite love it.

I'm 5'10" as well. I have never had an issue with the butt end of the 38" Spider CB catching on my clothing or belly. I grip it in a way that feels comfortable to me, similar to the way I'd grip a normal putter. The extra shaft is above my hands, but only a couple inches' worth.

There was. I'm not sure you can find any of the Tour CB heads any longer. I had the original CB they offered but it went under the radar and they quickly released the Tour S CB. I got the Tour CB at PGATSS but I don't think they have it any longer.

I have a standard Spider Tour 35 inch slant neck in the bag now, but also picked up the Tour S CB @ 38 inches in the spring.  It is also offered at 35 Inches....  Both the standard Tour and Tour S heads are extremely stable, the S is noticeably larger to the eye IMO.

Haven't seen a side by side but I found these descriptions:

The Spider Tour model has a CG location of 35mm from the face, 5,700 MOI and 29° of toe hang on a small slant hosel. Spider Tour has over 700 MOI more than the previous model.

The Spider Tour S is a larger version of the original Spider. The putter head is 3mm longer and 8mm wider in comparison. Spider Tour S is constructed at a heavier head weight and only offered at 35” and 38” lengths, with both featuring counterbalance grips for maximum stability.

Spider Tour S has a CG location of 38mm from the face, 6,063 MOI and is face balanced. It will be available in Spring of 2024.

I don't know what that size difference translates to, you can tell its bigger, but its less than 10%, I'm sure.....probably more like 5% if that...

Saw this on the front page of GolfWRX

TaylorMade Spider Tour S Broomstick

Another option in the long putter is TaylorMade’s Spider Tour S broomstick that we saw around the putting green. The head looks to be a little larger than the standard Tour S and that makes sense with the broomstick-style putters demanding heads near or over 400g. A TPU Pure Roll insert is installed in the face and the shaft is a more traditional double-bend design, just much longer! There isn’t the True Path alignment on top, just a full darker grey finish with a single siteline. Two moveable weights are out in the wings of the putter to dial in the specific weight a player might want.
