The Math of Golf.

Recommended Posts

The math of golf is undefeated and we are all subject to the rules that govern impact and they must be understood intuitively by hitting millions of golf balls, or literally by studying the factors that govern it and doing your best to apply them and create reliable references to draw from and build upon as you practice and play the game.  Grip, stance, and posture are not fundamentals of golf, because if they were, there would only be one way to do each in  order to play the game.

The golf swing creates a tremendous amount of force, not just on the club head, but also on the golfer, and  these forces are very reliable as long as you trust them and don't try to interfere and only assist.  It is not your job to hit the golf ball....it is your job to position yourself in relation to the ball such that your swing motion will happen to strike a golf ball, and that golf ball doesn't stand a chance.  It is your job to monitor where you are setting the low point of your swing arc and adjusting it from shot to shot in order to ether create shot shape, or to maintain leverage as you fatigue.

The quality of the strike, start direction, curvature, speed injected into a given shot, in that order will tell you precisely how good your swing motion is.  A touring pro is good at golf, not because of their visual swing motion, but because they can reliably put energy on a given spot in relation to the ball, which is what we all should be striving for. Impact is the same for everyone, everyday, forever, yet no two swing motions are the same because we are all individuals of different physical builds.  If you learn impact, your swing motion will evolve as you become more physically capable, because it will have to in order to deal with the increasing level of force the athlete is creating.  Trying to force yourself into positions that you are not currently capable of achieving will be inefficient and  also open the door to injury.   Swing your swing, with the understanding that you will have to adjust as you become more capable as an athlete.

A recalibration of the mind is what it required to truly improve at the game of golf which is by far the most difficult sport on the planet (hitting a baseball the single most difficult action and thankfully a golf ball isn't moving!) A poor result is much more an issue of being out of position to the ball, rather than "making a bad swing" but you have to gain awareness of the club as it moves around you and if you can't feel the club move around your, add weight to your clubs until you do, as this is what will create trust and reliability in your swing motion.  In that regard we all have to make ourselves become a human swing robot, because the club at a given speed is going to pull on the athlete in the same manner everyday forever, but the athlete much learn when and what direction that force should be applied as the club travels along the arc. The body must develop an understanding for what is coming in order to remain stable and in balance and that will come from hitting shots with an awareness of impact prior to hitting it. In essence the athlete should be working backwards from ball flight, to impact,  to address position as you can't aim address positions because the club is not under force at that time so trying to aim them will not be beneficial.

There is a lot of information that I will add to this thread over time but this little short video struck me because it is something that I have been mentioning in these threads for years with much pushback, but the math of it it fact, so I know in time it will be proven true.  I love this short because it quickly demonstrates how the force of a golf swing should not directed along the target line:

In the video the point along the swing arc that is being noted is shaft parallel to the ground on the down swing, and at that moment if the athlete were to begin pressuring the handle of the club they would be pressuring it at a 90* angle to the target line. It would point less and less out to the right as the club head travels the arc, but in all cases the momentum of the swing will be sent to the right of the actual target line.  That is also why I commonly posted this  diagram:

Planet in circular orbit

Because if you tilt it onto the same plane as the golf swing and viewed it from above just like in the video you would see that the forces are being directed right ( also downward) of the target until the low point of the swing arc  when they would point straight ahead, then after low point they would point left (also upward).  But since no shot should be struck at low point of the swing arc then plane/ shoulder line adjustments must be made to account for that.

This is an iron shot hit straight requires the plane to be left for a proper levered strike:

Yet a driver requires the plane / shoulder line to be right of the target line:

There is only one point along the arc that will match the golfer's intentions and the ball must be present at that location. This is precisely why every golfer should strive to know the math of impact and that is because it's rules govern every golf shot that has or ever will be struck. I will post more later for those that are interested in this type of content.  Have a great day.  R to L

Very important concept that is almost never discussed about how the athlete has to position themselves so that they can create the most leverage given their current physical ability.  This is also precisely why you should not compare your swing to a pros swing but the main lesson is that maximum efficiency you want to strike the ball with the ball with the most possible bend in your trail arm but not by holding it, but by levering against the weight of the club such that it happens to still be bent:

I don’t think that’s why he’s not getting much response. Bridges are on fire.
