Agree with NLU... Probably my favorite but when they get on their soapbox about a course being "disjointed" or saying "it's trying to be something it's not" drives me nuts... Randy and Tron are,to me, the biggest offenders... Rewatched the Michigan Tourist sauce and you could tell that they did not like The Loop or Greywalls

I’m from Michigan so I’ve watched that Tourist Sauce all the way thru a couple times. Again, video quality is the best on YouTube, although it seems like they do less and less now and others are catching up for sure. But yeah they complained a lot about the loop at Forest Dunes, pretty annoying. Just admit it’s a hard golf course and you’re not a pro.

Side note, I see Soly is signed up for the Creator Classic on the PGA Tour. Sure hope Neal can stomach that. He seems to have something to say or a cheap shot on content creators on a normal basis, and it sucks because he is probably my favorite of all those guys.

I played in a NLU event at Rackham here in Michigan years ago and Tron and Ben were there and they were all real nice and personable but myself and my buddy left that day both saying never again. I felt like it was a group full of dudes playing minimalist sets of blades with bubba whips in their Jones bag taking “artist” pics of their golf bags in black and white against a fence post. Nice enough guys, it was for a good cause, but I’d never play in another one of those events again.

I knew someone who setup a NLU event 5-6 years ago now, and were a few guys short. I brought a buddy who got paired in a different group. When we were leaving he's like this is a cult. Ha. I wouldn't go that far, but I do find a lot of the fans insufferable. I number of them felt like they were more fanboys of NLU and didn't actually like golf all that much. And then the others thought golf was a religion. Was a weird mix of guys. I never went to another event either.

Tron played Sweetens once and thereafter has fancied himself as some architecture snob. “I’m just playing angles…” if your angle is being an insufferable poseur, sure.

Full credit to No Laying Up for helping me rediscover my love for the game during Covid times.  I had been away for 10+ years while having young kids and a lack of 5-6 hrs of free time on the weekends.  A friend turned me on to the Tourist Sauce and Strapped content...and I was hooked.  Vacummed up all the NLU content I could get and was back to being a golf junkie.

That said, I have fully moved over to The Fried Egg guys for my golf content.  A good mix of humor, tour content, architecture content and off topic stuff.

The NLU boys jumped the shark once they were "purchased" by Titleist.  Every topic and every bit seems to have a Titleist tie-in ("getting fitted at Titleist", "working on the Stack System", "truly hitting it better with my Pro-V1x".  That's the biggest factor, but they certainly gotten high on their C-Suite supply...bring back the Strapped days!

Bryan Bros, BDS, and the Grant/Phil 2v2 Matches are my go to. I struggle with GG and some of the Barstool stuff.

Agreed. GG was fun when Micah and Grant were on it, but when they left they've never really got it back. Dalke is quite good fun and can clearly play, but it's not enough. Bryan Bros and BDS are my two favorites, but I'll watch some of Grant's stuff too. Wesley vs Phil was world class entertainment IMO. And the match that Grant had against Phil was fantastic.

The major cut series with Bryan Bros and Grant is great. The 2v2 Grant and Phil matches are also great. The chemistry and friendship really comes across in the vids. The Phil vs Wesley match delivered and then some. The BDS stuff may be some of the best pure entertainment on YouTube. The GG stuff feels like they don’t know what they want to be. You have Sean, Brad and Garret (sometimes) who are all serious sticks, and then you have the rest that really aren’t and don’t seem to care to be. It’s like oil and water for me. They don’t mix.

I think the problem a lot of YT golfers have is that they have to keep churning out the content and none of them are interesting or original enough to sustain interest long term (for me at least).  I find that I watch a few videos from one and then stop because you get tired of listening to the same voice.  Personally I have no interest in watching bad golfers like Bob Does Sports, I do watch Horvat and the Bryan Bros cut series just because they are so good and it shows how hard it is to succeed at the top level when you see how good Wes Bryan is but he can't stay on tour.  As a few posters have said previously I can't understand the Shiels thing, I suppose he has the following just because he's been doing it for so long. I think he does a massive disservice/insults people who actually listen to him in his club reviews where he still to this day talks about one club being more "accurate" than another, club path and face to path or all down to the user, nothing to do with the club.

NLU for relatable travel golf storytelling

grant/bryan bros cut series and pro collabs to  how top amatuers stack up against pros in no tournament play.

AMG and tpi for info on the way the body moves in the golf swing

bob does sports occasional in small doses for some laughs.

no much into equipment reviews any longer.

Curious how long it will take for YT golf to be a thing of the past. Club reviews back in the day seemed a great wY to become a (somewhat) informed golfer/buyer (thanksTXG). Now it’s marginalised to let’s find the trackman nrs and identify which 5 heads I want to hit. All stuff is marketed as being the best, just a horrible watch.

next up playing vids. Finding out there is only so much one can take of that as well. Repetitive and once you know the character, fun is out of it. It is truly becoming unbearable with all these dudes visiting each others channel as a SEO trick to support each other. Bleh.

golf travel, NLU style, is still fun. Just painful to see hidden gems becoming a thing of the past.

It's simply not a format that fits reality. Drive to Survive has limited content per season to keep it exciting and it's about guys hurtling around asphalt in fuel-filled sleds where death is a real possibility. Full Swing doesn't have nearly so much to build off of and it's in seasonal snippets despite having access to more golfers and footage than all the YouTube channels combined, excepting the OEMs and their stables.

After watching Live From I only have so much more bandwidth for additional "behind the scenes" stuff, and if I watch anything it will probably be WRX's own features. Most into Tour level golf still aren't watching that much outside of direct coverage and highlights as a regular thing during events. There are only so many stories to tell and for the channels covering other "flavors" of golf, there's a limit to how many golf destinations and history lessons people can even care about before getting burnt out.

For the in-depth stuff, the problem is YouTube doesn't pay a team what 30 minutes or an hour of quality content is worth. Google only has to cover its related infrastructure, so it's far cheaper to deliver content than traditional media while still getting ad spend from companies, yet 95% of the increased margins go to them with a pittance going to the channels themselves. That leaves the channels having to pump out videos to get more total views and to be able to push out more ad spots for their internal sponsors so they can get paid.

Would be a lot less overwhelming for viewers and more profitable for the content creators if outlets like Netflix, Hulu, etc., picked up the best of them and cut things down to fewer, high quality episodes. Maybe the very best make it up with their Patreons, etc., where dedicated viewers can send them whatever they think it's truly worth for access to what they're producing.

You should watch their Scavenger Hunt video podcast on their YouTube channel. Pretty funny and very cool for the golf nerd in all of us.

I would be interested in seeing a "big break" style show for the next generation of youtubers. It's tough to find someone with the charisma, golf talent, and work ethic to become a fixture in that space. I think it would need to be someone who can stay independent also. Most of the golf youtubers eventually succumb to a big sponsorship or partnership deal that takes away some of their authenticity and relatability.

I did golf Youtube stuff over 10 years ago, I shouldn't have stopped. Still want to start up again...

I really enjoy content from Bryan Bros, Grant, NLU and a few others. The mulligan videos with Bryan Bros was solid lol.

NLU got me into online golf (when I couldn’t play) and their travel focused stuff is still great. Production quality, if you look from the first OZ trip to the Argentina trip, it’s pretty cool how good they’ve gotten.

I would like to ask the follow up questions to the word salad you mention above though. Those comments are just stupid look-how-smart-I-am filler.

“Define ‘disjointed’ for me please. What do you mean by that?”

”I do not follow a golf course ‘trying to be’ anything. It is, or it isn’t. Specifically, what IS the golf course and what is it trying to be that it isn’t?”

Ping. Play Your Best.

I'm shocked with the popularity of golf and youtube golf these days that Big Break hasn't come back to life in some form or fashion. It seems like a no brainer to me.

I'd love to see some kind of a YT golf "tour". Like 10 events, film it all or live stream it. Have flights, different formats (shamble, scramble, stroke play, whatever) and have something you can watch multiple episodes with multiple content creators. I feel like its close with what the PGA is doing with the Creator Classic stuff, but the PGAT can't get out of it's own way, even when a golden goose puts its butt right on their face.
