Anyone take advantage of the Wilson Staff Model ball deal? Thoughts on the ball?

Triad player here.  Got the 3 dozen Staff Model yellow, have 3 rounds with them so far.  Was very happy with Triad, wanted to see if Staff might deliver:

- Lower driver flight (Triad tend to launch very high off driver)

- Higher approach spin (Triad is great green side, but looking for better stopping power on full shots)

- Same fantastic putter feel/roll/distance control

So far, it has delivered on the first two and I'm enjoying them. Putting has been good too but Triad is possibly the best ball I've ever putted so need more time there.  I'm a little curious about the Model X and possibly increased ball speed.  Durability seems good, great yellow color. Distances seem about the same as Triad, seems to spin less off driver, definitely flies a little lower which was what I wanted and definitely holds greens better. Over the last few years I've played Triad, ProV1, Z Star Diamond, ERC Soft, of that group I'd say Staff plays in between a ProV1 and Z Star Diamond.

I’m in the same boat. I’m interested in the Snell 4.0s, the Staff Models, and the new Vice Pro Plus but hate committing to basically a full season in one ball without knowing if it will work well for my game.

Have heard good things and not a bad price... but just as a note I recently opted to try the Maxfli Tour S balls, 4 dozen deal @27.50 dozen and could not be more pleased. All of the Maxfli Tour balls can be had at this price in the 4 dozen box.

But not the yellow ones, right? Those are only single dozens?

My son got several free sleeves of Wilson balls recently (both Staff and Triad) so we tried them for a few rounds.  I found both to be great balls.  My only complaint was cover durability.  Neither of us lose balls and even at my old man swing speed, the Triad looked rough at the end of the round.  The round I played with a Staff ball showed a little less wear.

No other complaints than that.  I was especially impressed with how true the Triad rolled on the greens.

When you add 4 single dozen Maxfli's to your cart, you get the same price as the 4 dozen packs.

I bought them and have hit them alongside the Triad and ProV. Driver swing speed is 92-94. The WSM (non-x) is definitely longer than the Triad for me, and marginally longer than the ProV. All are similar around the greens. I’ll use them this year since they are cheaper than Titleist and plenty long with good spin.

I got a chance to play a few holes and hit some shots side-by-side with the Staff Model and some other balls today.  The Staff Model feels firmer than the Pro V1, but around the greens and on iron shots, those two performed basically the same for me.  I might have been getting a bit more spin on the full swings with the Wilson... I had a couple of short irons that I thought I caught a little low on the face, but they still spun back when they hit the green.

I'm not sure what to say about the cover durability.  From experience the Pro V1 can take a beating.  One of the Staff Model balls got scuffed up almost immediately on a couple of wedge shots.  The other one I hit a three times with full wedge swings and there was nary a mark on it.

Distance wise, iron were all spot on.  For driver, I didn't hit manage to hit back-to-back good shots with the Wilson and a Pro V1, but I hit a couple with the Wilson that were as long as I'd expect to hit the ball with my driver.

We had no real wind to speak of, so I can't comment on whether or not that ball performs well in breezy conditions.

Generally, I'd say it matches up pretty darn well with the Pro V1, with a touch firmer feel, in my limited testing.

Played te Staff Model today - not the X.  Compared to Chrome Soft X and Chrome Tour, it is definitely easier to compress. Found the spin with irons and wedges very similar. The ball flight is lower with the Staff Model.  Softer sound and feel off the putter too.

I did not have any durability issues with the ball.  With the 3 for 2 deal, it's definitely a solid option.

PS.  The Wilson Staff logo on the ball is the GOAT logo for golf balls.  Just looks so cool.

I play Elixr but have used the Wilson Staff Model ball (non-X), and I really like it.  Much better feel than the previous generation ball which I found hard as a rock, although compared to the Elixr it's a smidge firm; nothing I couldn't get used to.  Great durability as well.

But as I posted in a previous thread, the price is too high in Australia to adopt the ball permanently, $AU80 is ProV level.  I see them come up for sale on eBay, which is how I got my current box, but I can't rely on the occasional eBay sale to switch to them.  Shame really, Wilson are on a winner with this ball.

FWIW I have tried the Triad and as someone else mentioned, it launches too high too quickly for me, feel great but that launch characteristic make them unplayable.

As an addendum to my previous post, I played 18 last week with the Staff Model.  I only had two balls with me (since I lost one the previous time I played) and on #2, I hit two bad drives, losing one ball and hitting the other off the cart path.  In spite of the bit of road rash on the ball (which was not nearly as bad as I expected it to be) I decided to keep playing with it.  For the rest of the round I only picked up one other mark on the ball and that was a tiny bit of scuffing that I'm pretty sure came from a sandy ball hit out of a fairway bunker.  So I'd say the cover durability is pretty darn good on this ball.

Performance was also really good.  I bombed a few drives and iron distances were exactly what I've been used to with the Pro V1/AVX.  Lots of iron spin... I hit a little draw 6i on #3 and the ball finished about 3 feet past its ball mark on slightly soft greens.  We had a bit of light wind at times and the ball held its line really well, with no obvious ballooning into the wind.  Short game control was really nice, too.

All-in-all I really like this ball.  I had been playing the 22 AVX and I've tried the 24 AVX, but I don't think the changes to the aerodynamics are as good for me as on the old ball.  PING's ballnamic agrees, telling me it isn't as good of a wind ball for my launch conditions.  I've started trying out the Pro V1x left dash (recommended by ballnamic as being a good wind ball) and it is working out pretty well, though the greenside spin might be a little lower than I'd like.  The Staff Model was one of my other recommended balls, with PING telling me that it would fly a few feet higher and be a little bit worse into the wind than the left dash, but the Staff would have much more greenside and full wedge spin.  If I find that the left dash doesn't spin enough in the dry summer conditions, I'll probably make the Staff Model my alternate ball for when I need that extra spin.

I bought the prior generation WSM in yellow from maple hill because they had that great deal on them.  They seemed like a suitable and cheap alternative to the ProV1x.  Maxfli X would be the other low cost alternative I'd consider.

I finally played a full round with WSM yesterday.  In fact, I played 16 holes with the same ball and the durability was superb.  I finally lost the ball on the 17th. I was more bummed losing the ball than hitting it OB.  From what I could tell, the WSM performed close to ProV1x in terms of spin and distances.

My ego was initially getting in the way of playing a yellow ball.  Also, there is talk and testing about change in spin with yellow.  I figured a touch less spin on the WSM isn't a bad thing and I noticed nothing different.

I'll be gaming the WSM now, and actually like the yellow.  Easier to track and find.

I think I'm going to pick up the regular Staff Model, have a golf weekend coming up and the deal isn't bad for 4-5 rounds of golf. Going to see how the regular version fairs, I did like the feel of the previous Staff Model but the higher spin hurt me a bit at times, I don't know how I'll like the softer feel hopefully it's around a ProV1 feel I should be fine especially if it performs as others have stated.

From what I'd heard, the 22 version of the Staff Model became the X and the 24 Staff Model is the new ball.  I looked up the golf ball guides in one of the golf magazines from 22 and 24 and the inside of the 22 Staff and 24 X are identical, which seems to confirm that those are basically the same ball with slightly different names.  Thus, the 24 Staff Model should take care of the spin issue that you saw on the 22.  My experience with the 24 Staff Model is that it feels a bit more firm than the Pro V1, which lines up with the compression numbers, so I doubt that you'll find it to be too soft.  Hopefully you hit them well during your golf weekend.

Yeah that's what I read too and the Staff Model is a softer version to drop spin which stopped me from playing that ball before. As for compression if a touch firmer to ProV1 I'll be just fine, just every ball is listed as soft to softest which gives no help so that's a good sign, plus ProV1 can be a "baseline" for compression.

I've wanted to test these and the 2+1 deal I don't see why not plus I don't want to bring my remaining TP5X with me cause I need to restock those.

I really like this ball, particularly the raw. Sure, it gets dirty, but for some reason it has better feel.

Just went back to it again after using the ballnamic on my previous favourite ball. Of course , it's not data driven and subjective to the questionairre, but i'm planning to take them for a spin again tomorrow.

Unfortunately, difficult to get over here in Asia. They come at a premium.

Love wilson balls. When I'm gaming a tournament or playing for money staff model x all day. If I'm out practicing or playing an unfamiliar course the duo soft for the price and feel. The newer duos are better off the tee than previous year's. Im trying to find a previous model for the X just to compare. Sometimes new doesn't always translate to better in the real world.

Had a pack of the Staff Model balls, can't fault them one bit, felt nice, went as far as pro v1s and spun enough around the green, i did find an X model a while back, i would say it does feel like the biggest difference between a standard and X i've used, the X felt seriously firm, more so than Chrome Tour X, or Pro V1X, or the left dash i use quite a bit.
