Surprisingly Cool Celebs

So after the Harper prom video popped it got me thinking about athletes and celebs that may seem standoffish or even rude but who are actually pretty chill.  My example is Post Malone.  Dude spends a ton of time in Utah and Salt Lake and I’ve run into him (literally once, lol) in a few small bars.  For a world famous musician he’s the most laid back dude I’ve ever met.  He’ll buy a beer for a random guy he talks to or just have a chat with anyone he finds interesting.   His vibe actually puts everyone around him in a similar laid back state of mind.  No screaming or lines for autographs, just a head nod and on about your business.

 

Anyone else have a story about chill celebs who’d you would never thought to be that way?

Initial thought. Who thinks/thought Post seems rude or standoffish? Everything I’ve seen he comes off as the coolest, most chill dude out there and would be exactly how you described he is! Haha

Vast majority of "very famous" sports/film/social media/music celebrities I've met are extremely weird and all have something off-putting about them. You dont reach those levels without having screws loose.

 

But the vast majority of "not so famous but well known" (low to mid level?) people in those same categories I've met have been very cool.

Back in the day, through friends, ended up hanging out quite a bit with a musician from a well known global band

 

Their image was total bad @ss, you’d think they were animals , trashing everything in sight and living like hells angels 

 

but in reality they were all chill and he was a total neat freak, had the cleanest most organized house I’ve ever seen 🤣

Not a surprisingly cool athlete is Jerry Rice!
I talked to him several times years ago when he was still playing for the Niners and he was always nice.

In December of last year, my wife and I were going to eat at the bar in a cafe restaurant. When walking to the bar, my wife nudged me and whispered look who’s sitting at the bar. It was Jerry Rice who was by himself. We didn’t say anything to him until he got up to leave and we said hello. He came over to us and talked to us for several minutes and then asked us if we would like to have our picture taken with him, which we did. He was wearing one of his huge SB rings. After that he walked around the restaurant and talked to people that recognized him and also took pictures. We thought that he was so cool to do that.

I couldn’t believe it but today my wife and I went to the same restaurant for lunch at the bar and guess who was sitting alone at the bar none other than Jerry.

We were sitting a couple of seats away from him and didn’t say hello until he got up to leave. He came over for a brief conversation with us. 
To me he’s a very cool guy!

 Who do we send it to? All we know about him is he lives in NYC and he does mad HIIT training and loves octopus 🐙! And oh yeah, here is a close up pic of his bicep to help identify him!

had just returned a few weeks before from vietnam and was at my new duty station in hampton roads, virginia. driving around on friday evening with nowhere to go and pulled over on the interstate behind a car with the hood up and three guys standing around.

 

was a rental a with a blown radiator hose. i offered to take them somewhere, and they asked if i’d take them to the next exit.

 

sure. turned out i had mike love and al jardine of the beach boys and their manager in the car. we drove into the coliseum and to the back doors. the manager offered me some money, but said no. he said if you’re not doing anything, come in with us. backstage pass, hanging with them before, then after the show. normal, non-diva, cool guys.

was half asleep in lax after a 12 hour flight from japan, waiting for a connection. heard a familiar voice in front of me, opened my eyes and it was gene hackman. ironically, we were seated next to each other in the first row, he by the window, and me in the aisle.

 

i didn't say a word. left him alone as he read a script buried in the corner with a baseball cap pulled low. when we got off the plane, he gave me a wink and said thanks. i said no worries, with a smile. i imagine he got plenty of yapping goobers wanting to talk, talk, talk and take selfies, etc., and appreciated the break.

knew a fancy, big concert promoter in japan. called me up and said to meet him. we were off to a hotel to meet someone. it was stephen stills. just hung around in his suite and jammed. yes, i jammed with stephen stills. 🙂

 

he was, again, a normal guy with a good sense of humor. totally unaffected by who he was.

 

he called me again about a month later to meet someone else again, but i couldn’t get away. i missed meeting eric clapton. clapton was seriously on the wagon then and it would have been a little boring. clapton went fishing whenever he was in japan on tour. no bars, no carousing, no nothin’. fishing.

Was around Terry Bradshaw for a while for a work situation. Great guy, just like he is on TV. Cool to everyone and anyone. Once saw him give his shoes away to his SUV driver because the guy complimented them lol. 
 

Had the chance to hang with Dimebag Darrell from Pantera at his house once through a mutual friend. Really nice guy. Very chill and down to earth. Huge KISS fan and had a house full of KISS stuff. I can still remember him passing a full handle of crown around saying “git you a pull!”. And I did. Cool memory. Weird where life takes you sometimes.

I've met a bunch of NHL players, actually last year me and one of my friends helped Jonathan Marchessault (2023 Conn Smythe winner) find his lost rangefinder on our golf course LOL. He was a really nice guy

 

I've also met several famous stand-up comedians at Just for Laughs in MTL, including some pretty big name people now who i met before they were famous. There used to be a show called "best of the fest" (still might be) where there was a bar below the showroom and a lot of the comics would hang out there after shows. I talked to Bill Burr briefly a long time ago when he was just kinda breaking out. I spoke to Iliza Schlesinger when she was like 25 before all of the Netflix stuff. Nothing major, just like, hey i'm a fan type stuff. 

 

One thing i learned at just for laughs is that aspiring comedians are some of the nicest and most appreciative people there are. They are great with their fans

Ok, just remembered one. Back when Michael Phelps won a bunch of Olympic medals the first time, like 10 of us were hanging out at this big lounge type place in the Flatiron district. 

 

Then Phelps comes in with his whole crew of Olympians! Was quite a buzz, they go and play pool. 
 

So, nobody approaches them until….wife is like,

 

Im going to talk to them! 

 

So she goes over and they all like

 

 

🤣

 

Then the other chicks in our group all go over. I think it made his/their day, was pretty funny.

My son was at a golden globes pre-party a few years ago and had good things to say about Nadia comenici, bart Connor, and Sarah Paulson.  He was there helping a former friend who had a hand in organizing the party.

Several years ago at Mission Ranch restaurant owned by Clint Eastwood, we were at the bar talking to the bartender that we knew and told her that we’ve been coming to this restaurant for more than 12 years and have never seen Clint here. She told us not to worry and someday we’d see Clint. Well, maybe 15 minutes later Clint walks in and sits down next to my wife. He was very nice and talked to my wife for a few minutes and then got up to meet his friend.

Cool story aloha. Ate there a few weeks ago. Such a cool and completely unpretentious spot. Always a fun casual vibe 😊

Early 90's working for a municipality in charge of monitoring a large music venue in SE WI. Full access passes, etc., probably the most surprised of their chill actions was Guns & Roses. Backstage before their set there was a buffet set up for everyone and they were all in line with us just like any other wedding buffet lol. They had their own picnic table that they chit chatted, looked at photo albums, etc., but were still friendly to everyone. I never would've believed bad boy Axl & GnR were regular Joe's.
