Hi All,

 

Four weeks out from the selection deadline (24/6), I'd love to hear your thoughts on who is going to make it, and who misses out! 

 

As most of you are aware, the Olympics is a pretty perverse tournament to qualify for, because of its commitment to national diversity. As it currently stands, World #18, Alison Lee, is set to miss, while World #316, Ines Laklalech of Morrocco, qualifies! Or another one: Korea will have two participants with a combined world rank of 17, while Malaysia will also two also, with a combined rank of 556!! It's weird, but I love it! And I think it is regarded highly by the players too.

 

• Top 60, based on world ranking on 24/6.
• 4 LPGA tournaments (and I guess similar on the other tours) and 2 majors to go. It might really shake up.
• Limit of 2 per country, except players inside the Top 15 may go to 4 from a country (probably only the USA will be influenced).
• It's top 60, but on current standings, it actually goes down to 316th gaining the 60th spot.
• I am not sure what they do about "The Goose", and her naughty country, with regards to selection. Of course, it affects any attempt at analysis.
• It's really volatile below the top 100 in the world, where players have low average points. One good result and a player may leap (or catapult, or soar, or..) upward 100 spots. So, this is just a peek at this stage, and a guess about how it finishes.
• Yuka Saso should quickly revert to Philippine citizenship!
• Some of the battles for spots are epic, and especially in the less powerful golfing nations, because of the volatility.
• I've included #61 and 62.

They don't seem to be doing anything fancy if I'm understanding...they just go down the WWGR from the top giving out spots. But once/if your country hits the maximum number of spots, the rest of your players are skipped. (And that max number is 2 except for the USA which gets 4, based on having four in the top 15).  Spots are guaranteed for France (not required; Celine qualifies) and for each continent.  The latter also doesn't come into play at the moment, I was wrong, Darquea qualifies inherently on merit.

 

The Replacement list is a bit non-intuitive. I think I've got it. The last (60th) spot currently goes to Dewi Weber, WWGR #312, a second player for Netherlands joining AVD.  The highest player just outside that AND from a country that doesn't already have its quota filled is Dottie Ardina #316.  So if say Jane Doe from Narnia gets injured and withdraws, the first replacement behind Jane is going to inherently be either (A) the next highest Narnian player, if they are ranked higher than Dottie's #316  or (B) Dottie to join Bianca as a second player repping PHI, if no Narnian is above her.  (Hence Dottie is listed as the replacement a lot...even on Lydia's row, as there is no other high Kiwi player). And then we have (C), the exception case, where if it was Darquea withdrawing, it would be the next highest South American, even though no others are ranked higher than Dottie, in that case the "min 1 per continent" rule would apply.

 

(Note that the docs in these links say they are as of March 11th but they match the numbers the Rolex site had last week...as of this moment it looks like Ines Laklalech has jumped both Dottie and Dewi....).

Some notable new names have emerged (or names i hadn't previously noticed)

e.g.

• Miyu Yamashita sitting above Ayaka Furue and Yuka Saso
• South Korea: Wasn't Park Min-Ji sitting high on the Rolex Rankings just a year ago (i.e. highest non-LPGA player) ... where has her Rolex Ranking plummeted? 
• For sentimental reasons, i hope Amy Yang and Jiyai Shin might leapfrog into the RR Top 15 (via a strong US Open major finish) and gain an Olympic placing?
• Hadn't realised that Chanetee has leapfrogged Ariya/Moriya in the Thailand standings

Minji is not even in the top 2 ranked Parks! Presently at RR #58.

I was also surprised at Chanettee's  rise. She might still qualify.

I'd argue Miyu > Saso and Furue despite not playing at LPGA and even will have a better chance than medalling that the latter 2.  (My own opinion, may not age well... we will find out in a few months 😈)

Keeping in mind there's another major in play before qualifying ends, there are several players who could launch themselves into the Olympic mix right near the top of the leaderboard tomorrow.  Not sure how the "recency" point bias works exactly but it sure looks like the potential Japanese volatility mentioned above is heavily in play with either a Saso or Takeda win, Andrea L and Jin Hee Im could threaten the top 15 and Michai hanging on to win would at minimum put her within reach of Patty.  Not sure if this adds to the pressure, given a life-changing (for most) $2M prize on the line already.

 

On the Canada front, Leblanc climbing the leaderboard a bit more tomorrow would go a long way towards catching Szeryk and getting closer to Sharp and then the following week all three of those players appear to be in the Shoprite (as is Savannah Grewal but she's 1 of 5 for cuts made since the T4 splash at Blue Bay) so potential for a bit of a tournament within a tournament for those interested.

Looks like Yuka doesn't need to claim Filipino citizenship after all! Winning the USA works just fine. Now the struggle seems to be for the second Japanese spot.

The Olympic tournament is growing on me. Hopefully the IOC adds a team aspect to it in 2028. Really enjoyed Kasumigaseki in 2021

Gotta feel for Nasa. I don't doubt that her ball search was more than 3 minutes, but it's a dodgy rule, at best. Like, when does the 3 minutes start exactly, and finish? And in this instance, was anyone even timing? The statement from the LPGA was suitably vague - maybe because they didn't have any specifics!

"+1" on your observations @Raving Shanker w.r.t. the horrible outcome for Nasa Hataoka.

 

The "Big Pickle" podcast hosted by Grant Boone and Beth Ann Nichols covered the incident, and had very similar questions that don't put the LPGA in a good light w.r.t. ideally there should've been a higher-up LPGA rules official watching the broadcast, and advising  the on-the-ground officials to prevent Nasa from leaving the scoring tent (so that they could minimise the damage/ prevent a DQ situation)

The "Big Pickle" podcast hosted by Grant Boone and Beth Ann Nichols covered the incident, and had very similar questions that don't put the LPGA in a good light w.r.t. ideally there should've been a higher-up LPGA rules official watching the broadcast, and advising  the on-the-ground officials to prevent Nasa from leaving the scoring tent (so that they could minimise the damage/ prevent a DQ situation)

The top 15 players on the World Rank (Right Side of table) are eligible for the Olympic Games, up to a maximum of four golfers from a single country.

After the top 15, the Olympic Golf Rankings (OGR) consist of up to the top two eligible players per country per World Rank, as long as that country does not already have at least two players in the top 15.

Meghan is 16 in World. USA already has 3 qualified. If Meghan can get to 15 in the world she will qualify.

The 60-player field for the Olympic women’s golf competition is set, with the latest update of the Rolex Rankings.

 

Two players can qualify per country unless they are ranked inside the top 15 in the OWGR, then up to four can earn spots.

 

With Yang giving South Korea three players, that knocked Austria’s Sarah Schober, at No. 330 in the world rankings, out.

Wow. A month ago I'd have bet money on Furue and Hataoka holding their spots.  It was clear from the start that the two majors might play an instrumental role for several countries but who knew it would be this "pure", that each one would cause a replacement on the Japanese team. 

 

The Canadian drama kind of fizzled with no one doing much of anything to grab the second spot (at least on the ladies...on the mens there was a final day swap with Conners going ahead of Hadwin).

 

Tough luck for Ewing.  Going to be really interesting in 4 years to see which countries earn >2 spots.

Feel very sad for some near misses - Furue and Ewing in particular. Both played steady golf in recent weeks, but neither quite brought the goods. You'd have to say on recent form that Yamashita over Furue was fair.

 

How is Stephanie Meadow in, representing Ireland?! She plays under the Northern Irish flag, a part of Great Britain for Olympic purposes, I would have thought. Or do I have this wrong?

Players with Northern Ireland origin are allowed to choose representation, for Olympics:

(A) GB&NI 🇬🇧 

Or (B) RoI 🇮🇪 (example = Rory McIlroy)
