Toulon Putters

Opening your device to browse the web and find something you love is quickly becoming a tradition amongst the fine folks of GolfWRX. We feel an itch we must scratch. Golf is what does it for some, and when it comes to special equipment, more importantly, putters, people lust after them. This is exactly what Sean Toulon has set out to do for golf equipment enthusiasts. For those who do not know much about Sean, he is widely known in the golf industry. He’s had a hand in overseeing operations at Taylormade as well as Callaway/Odyssey. I’ve been blessed to join in on the fun at Toulon Golf and just tag along like I’ve known them for years. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to be with the team at Toulon the past two days.

My Trip Out West

I get crazy ideas and I run full speed ahead, especially when it comes to something I want. I was fortunate to be able to create a relationship with Preston at Toulon Golf. We discuss golf, equipment, industry, and sports teams. It’s the best and I cannot be more thankful for what’s transpired over almost a year. I got fit into an Ai-One Milled #7, didn’t like it, and reached out to get a Vegas H1. About 10 Toulon putters later, here we are. We planned on going out to see them, get a fitting done, putter built, see Ranger (the new shop dog - wonderful boy), and play some golf. The first day I was up from about 3 AM CST to around 1 AM CST on Monday. What a day. Flew out to San Diego, got in my car, drove to Torrey to get on the list, went to Toulon HQ, did the fitting, drove back to Torrey, and got to play! I only played the front nine holes but good lord was it worth it. You’ll never guess the gentlemen I was paired with - THREE TEXANS! I’m also sitting behind the father/son duo that also had a Fields Ranch hat on as I did on Monday at Torrey - you couldn’t script this.
Torrey was so awesome. I walked up and was just in awe. While the course itself doesn’t get stellar architecture reviews, the course is beautifully conditioned, sits along the Pacific, and provides golfers from around the world the opportunity to try their luck on one of the toughest public tracks in the US. I was all in. I knew I would only get to play nine holes but it was brilliant. The company was fantastic, I walked, and we got all nine in. I made par on 3,4,6,8, and 9! I also had a pair of doubles so there’s that. It didn’t dampen the mood.

Toulon Golf

Monday was so crazy. My phone was on like 10% when I got off the plane and I scrambled to the nearest store to find a USB-C charging cord - “Is there a Ralph’s around here?” After I got the phone charged up, got on the list at Torrey, browsed the pro shop, I got in touch with Preston because I figured we could shift things around on the fly and do the putter fitting on Monday instead of Tuesday. The weather was about to turn sour starting Tuesday morning. We figured we could do the fitting, build the putter, and POSSIBLY use it on Tuesday. Things weren’t looking good though. I came in the door, met up with Preston, met Kathy (lovely lady who keeps tabs on things for the crew), gave Ranger a few rubs, and then was surprised with something I did NOT ever expect. Preston did tell me that I would have something to ship back home with me and I was going down the list of things that it could be. Head cover? No, I could bring that in my bag. Already have the polos and pullovers. It was a Vessel/Toulon bag with embroidered logos and my name on the ball pocket. Good lord. I now have to sink every damn putt I look at to be worthy of the bag. I guess if I don’t, I’ll have to just carry my clubs by hand or just stop playing altogether. We’ll see lol.
The fitting was so cool. The putting platform can move and provide level putts, and pretty much any breaking putt you would find on a course. Super cool stuff there. We rolled my La Jolla first. Decent numbers we captured, Preston also told me that I have a solid stroke. After that, we put the Atlanta H1 in my hands and saw improvement. We also tried the Vegas H1 with similar performance but I kept looking back at Atlanta. It spoke to me when I was in the room. I also tried an Alcatraz Mini H1 - NO LUCK. It was the weirdest thing to be similar to the other two, but we just didn’t like it. Result was the Atlanta, 35 inches, stock weight, 70 lie angle, and 4* of loft. The increase in loft seemed to help my delivery and more consistency.
Small details like this make big impacts. I made the first 15 footer I looked at on number 1 green at Pauma Valley with Sean looking on. He gave me a fist bump and said “I think that’s the one!” What a moment, y’all. I’ll also leave with a funny moment when Jon saw me blow a putt 6 feet by the hole and said, “Man, that putter sounds so good though.” We kept replaying that moment anytime someone would miss a crucial putt. A good joke we’ll have to keep alive that’s for sure.

By the way, I am coming home with three more putters - Atlanta H1 ‘25, Alcatraz H1 CB, and a Hollywood Proto with a black shaft. The bag is definitely heavier on the plane.

The Impacts of Relationships in Golf

We often seek out relationships with others in golf. We seek a solid group of guys to play golf with on the weekends and build relationships with people we’ve never connected with, but it’s through a common connector - golf. I’ve not got the big groups of guys who get together more than a handful of times each month. I think that’s what I’d like to have at some point but our schedules get crazy. I’ve got my crew but it’s tough to align days that work for everyone. I’ve been fortunate to have a distant friendship with Toulon Golf. I watch from halfway across the US what they are bringing to the golf industry with thoughtful design influences, yes, I said that. People still think that they just copy what’s been done before, but it’s more than just making subtle tweaks to legendary silhouettes of putters throughout the history of golf. Toulon Golf is about connecting golfers to their products, but more importantly, an opportunity to provide people with great attention to one thing - you. I was on site for two days and learned so much about the family, the business, and what’s to come. I cannot express to everyone here how special I was made to feel and provide my thanks to the folks of Toulon Golf. I look back at one point in my life where I wanted to experience things like this and now it’s here. I am a small part of what they do, and yes, I pay for my putters. I also had a hand in providing some photos for them, so I guess you can say that is something to put towards paying them back for the incredible experience. I was fit, played golf with them (14 holes due to rain), spent time at the office, and had the opportunity to speak to Sean about why I created this thread - I want nothing more than for you all to be able to experience the great customer experience at some point. Fittings will happen for the public! It’s going to be special when it’s all built out and complete. They want to do it right. They’ll stand behind their products and now the experience that will be provided to people soon.

If you have a question, reach out to them. Tell them Anthony sent you their way.

The fitting was so cool. I was told that my stroke is quite good and it was just a matter of finding something to create a tighter window for consistency. Using anything in an H1 neck is good but we noticed 20* of toe hang worked the best. The only caveat to this was that when I tried the Alcatraz Mini H1, no luck. We couldn’t quite put a guess on it but it just didn’t jive well. My delivery wasn’t as good and I missed right every time. Put the Atlanta or Vegas in my hands and it was automatic.

I’ll post some more images and a write up tomorrow or on my flight home Wednesday.

The bag was so incredible to see. I immediately put my clubs from my Cobra Vessel into this bag and took it out to Torrey, which was incredible. I only snuck in 9 but it was definitely worth it. Made par on 3,4,6,8, and 9.

Pretty wild that the Alcatraz didn't work for you but the Atlanta did. They are essentially the same shape but I guess that's why you test. Thanks for sharing your experience. Makes me like the Toulon brand even more!

It was interesting that the Alc Mini didn’t work. We figured it would since the toe hang is 20 but it just didn’t. We even checked the specs on it but it was the same as the Atlanta we ended up on.

I love this putter….

1 putted the first five greens today, last was a 20 footer for par, was adjusting back to my irons, so off a bit.

The weight, balance, feel, everything is perfect, this will be in the bag a long time, don’t fiddle with putters much.

Ordered one of the new mallet covers today, light blue and white look clean in the bag.

I shot the individual images for them! It was fun. I came home with the maroon and gold one for my alma mater - Texas State.

It’s also crazy you made a long putt like you did. I had a long putt on 1 for par and made it with my new stick in front of Sean. Cool moment that I’ll have in my memories.

I’d like to know more about the Miami and how it compares in size to other mallets, such as a Spider Tour or an Odyssey milled Eight T, both of which I like because they don’t have really wide faces (like the Tri-Hot Double Wide, which is long heel to toe.) Miami looks really good, the lines are beautiful, and I like that it comes with a plumber’s neck hosel.

I tried the Atlanta last year and didn’t mesh with it for whatever reason, but I thought the putter was very premium, just gorgeous. I think an H1 hosel is so familiar to me I will go with that on my next Toulon.

From what I saw, the Miami was closer in size to. Spider Tour than a Tour X. The full line is nice paired with the H1 hosel. I rolled a couple of putts with it and it felt stable and solid. It’s a nice offering for those looking into the larger mallet.

Do the new toulons feel better (or Way way way better) than the callway toulon putters>?

I think the new ones are firmer with better feedback. But not in a bad way. Last year’s First Run milling was a bit too fine for my taste and they were a tad too firm. This year’s Atlanta that I just got yesterday feels absolutely perfect to me. Way way better than the Callaway versions

Got the mini alc out on the course today for the first time. Very sandy greens but performed very well (29 putts) and had great distance control.

In true WRX fashion I ordered another with the same specs and the oversized grip just to try it out. But the normal midsize pistol has the lead to make the bag for the season so that one may end up on BST soon.

Kinda bummed, got my new cover today in light blue, mini Alcatraz is swimming in there, guess I just thought it would be same size as stock.

Talking about the team covers? I have the maroon and gold one on my Alcatraz '24 and it's perfect. Granted, it's a larger mallet. Maybe they'll make some in the mid-size mallet. I was going to try to put it on my Atlanta but it'll be too large for it.

Yep, never really gave it a thought about being a different size from stock, just too big. I guess I’ll return if possible or have to sell

Thanks so much for the pics. All of the putters look great.

I was checking out the New York City last night. Like that one a lot too. And the Alcatraz. And the Mini Alcatraz. And the updated Atlanta. What a lineup! I am also a fan of the forward weighting Toulon has on these heads.

The NYC is one of my favorites. Toulon’s options for double bend and H1’s opens up so many options for people with different strokes.

I agree 100% on the forward weighting.  I also really like is how square the mallet style putters sit at address. I have had less than positive experiences with other mallets/high MOI designs that want to sit open when you put them down.

I can’t say enough about these guys, just a top notch crew from design to CS.

I was trying to decide what to do with my cover, just got a random email out of the blue from Preston and got things sorted.

I don’t think I will ever buy a putter elsewhere again.

Any idea what first run model would be closest to the Rochester Sergio has been using? Having a tough time figuring out if it is a wider/NYC style or slimmer Austin/Hollywood.

I would say the Hollywood would be most similar or the San Diego from the '24 line, but they're different for sure. The Rochester appears to be a short blade in length and has different bumpers. The similarity between the Hollywood and San Diego is that their lines are sharper like the Rochester, which is why you may want to go '24 SD instead of the '25 Hollywood, as the Hollywood is softer around the edges.

The Rochester looks short heel to toe but also a high face, it also has a rocker sole vs a tri-sole so probably a stubby version of the SD would be my guess over a Hollywood.

I brought the Vegas (2024) and Maimi out today. Both are excellent-feeling putters.

The Miami feels so solid. It is very easy to line up and provides amazing feedback.  Vegas to Miami is a very easy transition.

Was looking at the Toulon website this morning and configured up a Las Vegas model for myself as well as extra weights and put them in the cart to checkout.  Was then disappointed to discover that Toulon doesn't offer a military discount like Callaway Odyssey/Toulon did.  Oh well I guess...
