I couldn't agree more on this guy.  If you grew up in the 90's he was the new promising star after the 91 Open.  What happened to him is just outside the limits of imagination.

Some thoughts on Tiger's career: you can't get higher than that (unless you're Nicklaus), but he's interrupted his career big time after his issues and the car crash.  From 2019 to the present he could never perform at his previous level.  A healthy and competitive Tiger would have gone further than Nicklaus in my opinion.  But a person's life is full of ups and downs and there's usually a direct impact on golfer's career.

I find Rory's major drought fascinating but it's not a "career crash" in any way. Here's his major record (leaving aside the regular tour wins which he is still producing). A crash would be lots of MCs and spiralling down the rankings. He is currently the World no.3!!

I think it's a lot of these guys are good, were just expecting too much from them. Not everyone is Tiger of Jack. Our Rory, JT, Spieth, Brooks, heck even Padraig, were the prior years Langer, Payne Stewart, Jose Maria, Curtis Strange. Talent is deeper and courses are a more difficult, so misses on shots are magnified. Hence, maybe Rory would have picked off the US Open last year, but we have Wyndham instead.

Apparently Wyndham won because of his caddie’s questionable routine on lining up putts….😉

And maybe because for some reason the 18th fairway at a US Open was about 90 yards wide...

Since his last major: 17 pga tour wins including the Players and 3 FedEx Cups, plus another 5 Euro wins and 3 RtD.

That’s a Hall of Fame career right there.

Excuse me? Are you really saying Phil’s not one of the all time greats?  I’ve never been a big fan but you don’t consider Phil an all time great? C’mon man give him his due. 8th all time in wins and every single player (except Tiger)  with more majors won started his career 50 years ago or more. 🤯

Phil is easily a top 10 all time golfer.  And most of his 45 wins included Tiger in the field.

Wow. and I thought he won because he had the lowest score.

Yeah, you would think the other players would call it out…or the rules officials would step in…if it was breaking a rule.

It’s not a matter of “questionable “….just like Langer and others with the long putter either they are breaking the rule or they are not.  No one is giving the old wink wink nudge nudge and ignoring violations.

Seve Ballesteros was really bad towards the end of his Career. I thought Faldo fell apart as well. As far as Duval he had a back injury and that can ruin everything when it comes to golf.

Most recent Jordan Spieth. I think JT fell apart a bit however, he seems to have a weathered the storm.

Sorry, it’s this guy every time. Frank should have all the records and then some. I hate to think about it and put down what should have been. I believe Frank missed out on these numbers from 33 y.o. to present, 15 years:

40 wins

7 majors

then all the other FedEx cups BS that would naturally come.

Spieth, Thomas, whoever. Their underachievements are minuscule. They could have added another major or two. And for every underachiever, you have a Brooks Koepka and Morikawa. It evens out.

But Frank, Frank’s lost numbers stack up as a top five greatest golfer of all time. Come on..

Watchin Spieth talk after every hit and being over invested didn't help his game...... Spieth walkin the high wire and wavering was predictable....... seems his only issue was figuring out his mental game and he woulda reined for many years.

Wonder if he or his team ever knew that........ his coach doesn't seem to have the personality to zen him out

Can't figure how to like my own posts

Holy s***, it's YJS by a long shot here.

YJS-- at one point, you could sort of believe he was going to be a very legitimate #1. The guy just made literally every god damn 15-25ft putt during that stretch it seemed like. You never really understood "how" he was going to be a dominant world #1 because on the surface the ballstriking never looked like Tiger/Rory/Vijay/whoever. But making every god damn 15ft putt you look at can make up for a lot of s***.

The others, not the correct answer by a long stretch.

Rickie-- never lived up to his potential as an am. People forget that he Top 5'd in ALL 4 majors in the early 2010s (maybe '14 or '15?) but he's literally never been a closer. The talent is deep enough that he'll probably tally 8-10 PGA tour wins before it's all said and done and will have a pretty nice career. He's now getting close to where he was for the first part of his career. Nice guy, good player, just not a closer.

JT-- has always been a sort of DJ-type player that will likely be around because of the talent, but not really a world #1 type player. 2023 was pretty meh, but don't count him out. He has all the pieces individually and he will always be able to get it done when they sync together.

Jason day-- Meh, it's hard to keep that level of sustained play for an entire career. That's why the guys that do it are special. He's made a pretty impressive comeback IMO and I think he finds another major before he retires.

I thought it was because he was lucky enough to play on the only course in the world where you can slice 10 football fields to the right on the 18th hole and still be on the fairway

Another vote for Spieth.

He used to play with such fire and competitiveness but now just looks like all confidence is gone and he's just bracing for his next OB off the tee or missed 4ft putt.

I think it was over for him when he started doing those stupid half practice swing club casts on the golf course before his shots.  Seriously, what and how many swing thoughts must be going through your head on the course if that’s your pre shot routine?

Duval for me.  Just because I was a young pup and he was my first favourite player.

I remember reading an interesting article about his problems years ago that showed pictures of his swing positions when he was #1 and then when he was struggling.  His swing had just broken down and he was doing a number of things wrong.  It wasn’t his back or his confidence, he was just making bad swings, hips were sliding, etc.

Baker-Finch is a prime example of a career crash.

  • Wins the 1991 Open and reached the world top 10
  • An unspectacular 1992 season with a 2nd place at the Players
  • Only one top 10 finish in the 1993 season
  • Last career worldwide top 10 finish was 1994 at the Masters and he missed 23 cuts that year

He had a great looking swing and was a top putter.
