2024 TP5X vs Z STAR XV

Has anyone compared these two balls? I've seen lots of good things about the tp5x. I exclusively srixon and while they are cheaper DZ was wondering if the tp5x may be worth paying the extra bucks for?

XV was lower launching/spinning than the TP5x for me.  It also feels a bit softer.  So if you need the higher launch a touch more spin across the board, TP5x may fit you better.  If not, there's nothing wrong with the XV besides the seams splitting.

I've never had not one seam to split on me, Now of course I'm only swinging driver 90-95. Does the tp5x spin more into the green than xv?

It spins more with irons in general and does have more green side spin as well.

I've been playing the XV the past few years and have liked it quite a bit, seam issue is #1 problem for me.  This past weekend, I played the TP5x, liked it quite a bit.  As you said, feels a tad bit softer, I couldn't say it launched much higher for me, hard to tell about spin, I didn't notice and big difference.  I'm going to keep giving it a try, I bought the 4 for 3 box, but also have several boxes of XVs at home to work through.

I've played the XV a lot in the past, I found it to be a great ball off the tee and with longer irons, shorter irons and green side chipping you need to really spin that ball properly or it won't hold greens which was always my issue with it, played it a bit recently and still a solid ball.

 

Never had seam issues, probably don't last long enough for me but for the price they are great but the TP5X are probably better and what I'm mostly playing.

Has the feel of the XV softened some over the years? In the past, I found it to be objectionably hard off of all clubs.

WIll never play a Srixon until they fix the SEAM issues. They have had the issue for years now, blows my mind that they have not addressed it.

I’ve played a lot of golf. Played Srixon balls for a while. Never ever have I had a ball split on me. How long yall trying to play a ball for???

I've emailed them about it three times already.  They didn't respond the first two times but finally did the third time and they said that it's purely cosmetic which I don't believe for a second.  It's too bad because the XV is such an underrated ball.

XV seams always split within a round.  My cousin had a Z-Star split on him not even 9 holes in.

Same here. never once have I had a srixon XV or Reg Z star split on me and I play them sometimes 2-3 rounds before dumping them.

Yeah I just don’t get it. My SS hovers around 120. Play with a couple guys who swing faster and they play XV’s. Literally never seen anyone split one. Played the Diamond over the winter and absolutely no issues.

Same never seen an XV or Diamond split on me, had some scuffs before cause the cover is thin. But maybe I don't keep them enough holes to notice.

I’ve played Z Stars and XV’s for years. 105 driver SS. Not one single split.

Or maybe my cousin and I kept getting bad batches, lol.  I have a buddy that currently works for the USGA but was a Srixon/Cleveland fitter so he got deep discounts on their equipment.  He's a +3 cap so he rarely loses balls.  He showed me his stash of XV's with busted seams.  It was a sight to behold to say the least, lol.

I am curious to know how many holes these "split" balls have on them? I never ever play a ball beyond 18 holes in casual rounds and in tournaments I switch at the turn.

When I played the XV's, they wouldn't last more than a round without the seams splitting.  Let's just say I sacrificed a lot of XV's to the golf gods after every round for a little while.  I was witness to the time that a Z-star seam split before 9 holes when my cousin put them in play.

I can’t believe some folks don’t see the seam splitting issue. Has happened on more Z-stars than not for me. It’s unfortunate since the ball really does play so well.

Pretty much my experience and thoughts.   It seems that it requires contact right on the seam, then it shears/splits the cover material.  It's just a matter of time until you hit the ball on that spot.  Could be on the first hole, could be on the 18th, but it is inevitable for me.

I have played Srixon for the better part of 6 years now.  First started playing them at my last club.  The Cleveland/Srixon PGA Tour rep is a member there, we'd get to see and hit the new stuff well before it hit stores and sometimes before hitting the USGA approved list.  I would say 50% of the best 100 golfers at that club played Srixon golf balls, and a bunch played their irons.  Never once did anyone have a ball split, or cover come loose, because I can damn well tell you it would have been news.

 

I cruised at 120mph with the driver 6 years ago, now I am around 113.  I've lost balls the first time I hit them, and I've played full rounds with piles of them(typically after a full round they go in the shag bag, but a few escape and get hit randomly when I try some kind of crazy shot or just want to hit a second shot.  I have never seen a Z Star split, or seam come loose, or anything else.  Has the seam become more visible?  Absolutely, hit one there out of the rough with an iron or from a bunker and sure you can see them, but actually splitting?  Nope, never have I ever seen one.

 

Currently I am playing the Z Star Diamond and have since it's release.  Before that I typically played the standard.  Never played the XV much other than a few rounds when farther up north with much softer greens.

They are not literally splitting in half, the cover is shearing/coming off on the seam line where the ball's cover is put together.  There are several threads here on WRX about the issue going back several years, covering different generations of their balls.  Here is one

I could go into my bag right now and pull out an XV and show the seam wear.

First few responses I read from folks were talking about seams splitting and covers cracking.

 

I have seen seam wear, there are only a few manufacturers that make their balls in such a way that there are never a visible seam if you happen to impact it through the rough or sand.  Visually Srixon XV's may be the culprit, or it could be all Srixon's, I have seen a little wear from time to time, but have not seen it affect ball flight in any way visually or a couple of times in testing in a bay.  Maybe Srixon's are visually more impacted by this than some other balls.

 

I guess I am still used to the old balata balls that you never really got more than 3-4 holes out of them.  In a regular round I will retire a ball after 18 holes.  In a competition round after 9, or before if I nick a cart path or something else hard.

 

I still play the Z Star Diamond due to performance, with a second place going to the Maxfli Tour X.  I would play the Callaway or Titleist or TM if the performance was what I wanted, price be damned, but for my game the Diamond is the best.

It's a well known fact that the Z-Star lineup can get split seams.  I've experienced it and so have others I'm close to.  I also stated that my buddy who used to be a rep for Srixon/Cleveland has a hoard of XV's that have the split seams which further validates the seam issue with the Z-Star lineup in general.  However, I've never seen the seam split from their Q-Star line.

Split at the seams?  Well I have also stated that the PGA Tour Rep for Cleveland/Srixon is a member at my old club and we never saw a Z Star "split".  As in the main Cleveland Srixon rep, to the point we would see every once in awhile Srixon players at our club.  So I will continue to believe what I have seen, which, yes I have seen seam wear.  Splits?  Nope, and that's even after fitting days where Z Stars were hit with drivers all day, and piles of irons and wedges.  I have also played Z Stars as my main ball since late 2017, and have never had one split.  I must be the luckiest person on the planet.

I liked the XVs but had the same issues as others the seams started to wear almost immediately when i played them and general durability overall wasn't great when i used them. Price was nice but i have moved on to more durable options.
