LAB DF3 Grip Change

I kept the same 1.5 grip, but added a counter weight.  It’s not my gamer yet so I can’t say how well it worked.

I emailed Lab a few questions last week and was informed that the Accra shaft comes with the weight at the end of it, the other shaft choices do not.

Thanks.  Mine is the stock steel shaft, so I dunno.

Can one use a DF3 CB bought at their standard specs to get around the shaft lean if the shaft leans doesn’t suit the eye but prefers the look of the DF3 vs the OZ?  So instead of buying 3 to 4” longer for the CB just buy regular specs and use like normal putter.  Terrible idea due to other reasons I am not aware of?  Or could work?

The shortest CB length they offer on the website is 36”.

Was thinking about switching my DF3 from a press 3 to the pistol but the weight difference is almost 20 grams. Would i need to send it back to get this done or can I just add weight to the end of the grip to make up the difference? Or is it negligible enough it wont really matter?

Got a stock df3 and I hate the white press grip. I have always used a Ping blackout and want to put one on. What do you align it to if you put it on?

i took off the white lab press pistol grip and replaced with a pingman blackout. Result for me is that the putter swings much easier and more freely. Feel is a bit softer and strike seems more consistently middle for me.

 

here’s my rationale for the change:

 

fat grips help quiet the hands, engage the “big muscles” and swing the putter by rocking the shoulders. Xander is a good example of this kind of stroke. His hands are fairly rigid to control the torque of the putter.

 

with a LAB putter, we don’t need to quiet the hands to control the torque because the balancing has already accomplished that. Instead, we need to free up the stroke to let the putter head swing. For example, we do the thumbs off drill to help loosen the rigidity of our hands and free the putter head. Fat grips work against us with a lab putter.

 

A lab putter in the hands of someone that strokes it like Xander probably isn’t as beneficial as for someone who strokes it like Cam Smith. A free flowing stroke like Cam is more prone to face rotation/squareness issues - something a LAB putter can greatly improve.

 

visually, the straight on ping grip is cleaner to my eye than the press grip and the black out grip looks sweet overall.

How did you line the grip up with the slanted shaft?

i actually find the blackout easier to look at than the press grip because it’s straight on the shaft. I didn’t find that the face felt like it was floating in front or anything. Basically anything you think would be weird about it, I didn’t find weird at all. Played a full 18 with it today and found it much more comfortable and I putted great with it.

Are you still using this?    
 

I just picked up a DF3 and put a Ping PP58 cord on it.  Will try it on the course tomorrow but it feels good rolling it on my putting mat

I just did what looked right to me and tried to line it up with the alignment marks on the head.  
 

I used it this weekend and I think the grip is lined up well.

You think it messed with swing weight or balance etc?

No, I think it’s fine.  It still balances toe up and when I spin it I don’t notice any difference.

 

I don’t know about swing weight, don’t think I’m sensitive to that

I'm wanting to try this, but still can't wrap my mind around lining the grip up with the head in my vice due to the shaft lean. I guess I can just adjust it while it's still wet and go with what feels best.

Mine is parallel to the alignment mark.  Looks good to me.  Definitely have a look before it dries.
