Heading to Payson - is it possible for a non-member to play Rim Club or Chaparral Pines?

I live in Scottsdale, and want to get out of the heat.  I am legitimately interested in investing in a property up north (at elevation).  But I also just really want to check the courses up there.

 

If anyone has any leads, DM me.

No.  Unless you know someone.  Unless your a woman - there is an event at both in Oct.

 

I have not seen any recent communications on property (builds) which would suggest they are proactively welcoming guests for "trials".  But you can always call and ask since you are looking for a place and see if they can give you a tour and a round.

Thank you so much for the offer.  I really want to get a cool weather property at elevation for both summer and winter use.  I know Show Low is really popular - it just seems so much further than Flag (now way overpriced) or Payson (which has no skiing). 

 

But ... I have never been to Show Low.  I have a free weekend coming up (kids and wife are away).  Will DM

Show Low is a cool little town, especially considering Flag is full anymore, but it's not really a good comparison. Drive is certainly longer but I'll take the 260 over I17 any day, especially once the widening project finishes up. Dining options are severely lacking in SL (but don't sleep on Casa Ramos in Heber), as is most other town type amenities. It's quieter, far less valley traffic invading in the summer. If skiing is a priority then I'd suggest visiting Sunrise before making a commitment as it's considerably worse than Snowbowl, unless you're happy to just cruise green and blue groomers all day when there is snow. Hunting and fishing are much better in SL as compared to Flag.

Have skied both Sunrise and Snowbowl extensively.  IMO calling Sunrise considerably worse is unfair.  Amenities and terrain are better at Snowbowl, but Sunrise historically is far less crowded and more expansive.  Both have to fabricate their own snow often so the conditions are a wash.  I care far more about getting on the slopes and enjoying nature than getting a beer.  IMO this is better at Sunrise.  If staying at a hotel and needing support amenities while skiing (good food, drinks, a place to hang out with friends) then snowbowl is better.  Just depends on your needs.  Tough conundrum.  I prefer Chaparral Pines and The Rim to the Torreon courses, but Payson isnt really a mountain retreat.  It is still quite hot there compared to Show Low/Pinetop.  Overall the public golf is much better in Show Low than Payson.  Public offerings in Show Low are probably better than Flagstaff.  All things considered I would definitely pick Show Low over Payson.  Private courses in flagstaff are off the charts good.

 

 

**EDIT  I really like Torreon it is a great property I could play every day, but not quite at the Rim level.

Less crowded, more expansive, shorter season, much less technical. Again, just depends on what you want. I love hiking the upper bowls as well as touring around the San Francisco peaks, touring doesn't exist in SL. Reality is though I'll usually just keep driving until I end up in Silverton 🙂 Public golf is definitely much better in SL though and extremely lacking in Flag.
