50th birthday trip

Recommended Posts

Turning 50 this October. Was think about a golf trip with 4 buddies and the wives. Three couples are in the midwest, one is in Houston area. Was thinking maybe a Thursday through Sunday trip.

The ladies won't be golfing.

Thoughts, suggestions?  Was dealing pinehurst or Austin Texas.

Thursday through Sunday including travel? That would only give you Fri/Sat for golf.

With that in mind you might want to avoid a golf-centric destination like Pinehurst. Maybe choose a place where the golf is adequate but there are more things for the ladies to do while the guys are playing.

Vegas, Phoenix or Scottsdale would seem to fit the bill.

There are also lots of nice resorts with spas and pools in addition to good golf courses. Check out places like Barnsley Gardens, Chateau Elan or Reynolds Plantation (all a short drive from the Atlanta airport). I'm sure there are similar options in Austin like Barton Creek etc.

Vegas, Phoenix and Scottsdale are the worst places in America (maybe the world) to play golf in October.  It is overseed with 80% of courses closed, scalped or just reopen and CPO and terrible condition.

Have a look at Payne Valley courses and such.  Pinehurst is fine.

Actually going to Branson in August and playing buffalo ridge and probably one more course. Probably not playing Payne's Valley since it's around $450 a round now and we have already played it once.

Pebble Beach!

This.  The challenge is getting rooms and tee times at this point, as Sept/October is our high season.  Usually sold out long before now.

Edit, just checked for ya, and Pebble is sold out but Spyglass and Spanish Bay have tee times and Poppy Hills likely will as well.  A lot for the wives to do in the area as well.  Weather is usually, I say usually, epic during October.

Since it's a milestone Birthday, splurge and go to a very nice resort that has lots of amenities plus golf. Pinehurst, the Greenbrier, the Broadmoor or Kiawah would be good choices. The Greenbrier has a casino. I don't believe the others do. I've stayed at all four. My wife prefers the Broadmoor with the Greenbrier as her second choice

Honestly we got invited to a neighbor’s 50th in NYC and it kind of pisses me off. There’s no way we’d go except my wife has never been there so it’s a decent excuse. I’d much rather spend that $3k on stuff I chose instead of someone else’s idea of fun.

So be a big boy and say no?

Yes, of course. 🙂

I assume all eight of these adults are going to have “big” birthdays eventually. It’s a bit selfish to ask everyone involved to celebrate by spending a ton of money to travel with you, but that’s obviously up to the people involved.

NC in October should be about perfect. Maybe not ideal pool weather though.

I’ll go ahead and throw out French Lick Indiana. Cool historic old hotels and 2 really good courses on site with a third, Sultans Run, not too far away. Good spa for the ladies, cool hiking trails, scenic gardens, and a list of activities the resort could schedule for you. Honestly it’s a pretty solid couples weekend trip. Could work well for your group. Early October would be great, late October not quite as much

In TX you've got a few options

Omni Barton Creek - solid resort, good pool, place for the non-golfing wives to hang out. The golf courses are good but not great, although usually in really good conditions.

San Antonio - Ditch the Riverwalk, stay at the Pearl. Or stay at the TPC. Lot of good golf in San Antonio.

Dallas/Ft Worth - PGA Frisco, new Omni resort. We are going to check it out this fall, looks great online.

Pebble beach would be the best, if not most expensive option, but as pointed out they are usually fully committed at this point.  I would make a phone call though and let them know it is your 50th b-day celebration.  Never hurts to try.  Also you could most certainly get a tee time the week of play by going into the proshop and explaining the situation.  No doubt they would let you have a later tee time that is not guaranteed to finish.  I have done this on about 5 replay rounds and played as a single with my wife in the cart.  Out of the 5 I finished #18 twice in the dark.  So many good food and golfing options and shopping and beach nearby for nonplaying wives (not to mention a great spa).  #2 on my list would be the Sanctuary at Kiawah.  Probably easier travel, as you have Charleston nearby and the hotel and accomodations are awesome.  Dont bother with other courses IMO, just play the ocean course twice.

Charleston muni is a great course as well. Really cool greens since the design.

Id argue Phoenix and Scottsdale are dumpsters year round.

I'm sure the ladies can enjoy Pinehurst, even if they're not playing golf.

Napa.  Not excellent for golf, but everything else is 12/10.  Silverado is good enough for most...and a few other courses in area that are decent.  October in the Napa Valley is off the charts great.  Wives will love it.

Alaska and a few other airlines fly into Santa Rosa (less than an hour to Sonoma/Napa Valley) or otherwise it is an hour and 45 from OAK to the heart of St Helena/Calistoga.

Yes, leave the wives at home.

Too funny.  That was my first thought also.  If you take the wives, it's not a golf trip.  It's a couples trip with some golf thrown in.

That being said... if the wives must come.. listen to Carerra (which is nearly always wise, about all things).  And for the golf allowed, try very hard to gain access to the private clubs nearby.
