PING PLD Milled SE DS72 Hovland Edition Putter 2024

Does anyone have any info on this release? I'm seeing it on a few sites for $449.99. Looks awesome so I preordered one anyway because I love this shape.

It's an LE putter carbon, patina finish, topline, smooth face.

 

Basically a custom PLD build for retail price if this is what you'd possibly want in a PLD build.

I was so surprised when I saw it at that price because it is exactly how I'd build my PLD putter haha. I'm guessing I can expect a good amount of rusting with it being carbon patina?

Not every brand charges 25-50% more for an LE putter, I think just too many are used to that. They also had the Anser 30 SE not long ago so looks like they're going to be releasing a bunch.

 

Could also be a ploy to get people more interested in the PLD Custom program but if they come out with more shapes for retail price I'm all for it if they have something I want.

Surprised and delighted to see this release, and in carbon steel no less. Well done Ping.

 

I'd be pretty annoyed if I had bought a Hovi a few months ago though, especially at the gouged prices on the flipped market!!

Considering the Hovi ones were his actual putter and this is different just with his name on it then it's not the worst. But if one paid flipper money then that's on them.

I think this is great.   This is a playable version and price for that putter.

 

let the collectors and flippers that never intend to use them jack the price up on each other on the hovi and exact replica

Personally I like this version better than the Hovi, because I prefer just the top line.  That said, it's super strange to spend the small cost to put Hovland on the bottom, but not the small cost to put the flange sight line on it.

Just ordered this.  Love that it's USA made.  Love PING as a company.  Man I am so weak willed when it comes to cool putters.  Deficit spending is not good.  Can't wait to have this beautiful carbon finish in the hand.

Absolutely.  My point was though that (although I'm pleased to see this come out and will probably get one) it's more than a bit odd to do two different special releases of the same player's putter - one exact replica and one looser one - within a few months of one another.  All the stranger when the first one, the Hovi, was kitted out the way he actually plays it, but made in such small numbers and thus so collectible that very few people who manage to get one are likely to actually use it.  Why not just release the Hovi in a special edition like this in the first place when he won the Fed Ex last year?! They could have given people the option of a big red Winn grip or a normal PP58 or PLD one too.

I gave in and preordered one as well since it's a whole $1k cheaper than a PLD custom. I wish it didnt say Hovland edition becuase it's not. But the retail PLD have always been to soft for me so I am excited to try this almost flat milling. It doesn't look as flat as the LE PLD Tyne from a couple years ago but it also doesnt look like TR grooves. Maybe somewhere in the middle. Is this milling offered through the PLD Custom program?

I think any milling is available in custom.  I wish it didn't say Hovland as well but at least PING are subtle in their branding, usually.  Now I'm the owner of two DS72 milled LOL

I preordered on Tuesday and I honestly can’t remember being this excited about a putter in a long time. Carbon, patina finish and topline all just look so good. Hoping it rolls as well as it looks once it arrives

I have my Cameron 7 set up to 'Hovland' specs. 360g / 36" / Winn CB grip. Best setup ever.

 

Love that Carbon finish. So tempted by this, especially with the 360g head weight. I would add an inch and put the Winn grip (black/blue, not that garish red). Just wish it had the cavity sight line.

 

Hopefully there will be one in the shop to try out.

Nice crisp feel with the carbon and lightly milled face.  Nice grip.  Like an upsized PP58.  Slightly lighter than a standard DS72.  Beautiful to look at.  Mine was unfortunately already rusted when received so I am waiting for a replacement.  The joys of carbon...

Where was the rust building up at? Who did you order from? Did the head come in plastic wrap?

On the left bumper and underside which is most exposed in the headcover.  No it doesn't come in plastic wrap.  There seemed to be some oil on there but not nearly enough.  I drenched it in food grade silicon before returning it to prevent further rusting.  It was a big retailer but I don't feel like calling them out.  Should get the refund.

i was able to get out and play 9 holes with it. I love it! I'm coming from a scotty x5 and for me at least this feels much softer. Not sure why that is but am anxiously awaiting the chance to practice around with it

The color and quality of the steel is amazing and I am looking forward to seeing it Patina.

 

I am also experimenting by playing it at 36” with a 15” winn grip to give it a counterbalance. I grip it around the 34” mark. Basically the full Hovland putter experience.

Are you protecting it with oil/silicon at all?  Just letting it go?  Looks great

For now I’m just letting it go, I am a big fan of Patina!

 

I won’t go full rust though, if that happens i will hit it with some oil

This is the way. 36" / 360 / Winn CB is the best. I am seriously tempted by this one.

Got my second one in the mail and this one has a piece of glue stuck to the face.  I always used to think PING had the best quality control, especially because this is USA made, but it's frustrating.  Ping will fix it that's for sure.  Other than that beautiful putter
