Hey guys, need your help right here, been playing golf for over 10 years now, I'm 38 and aging! Handicap moves constantly anywhere from 4 which was my lowest to current 10 because I'm coming out of an injury where I almost lost my leg to a knee septic arthritis.

I was in hospital for 10 days and had 4 surgeries, that was last November, was out of golf for 6 months and its been 4 months since I slowly began to play again. My golf is nowhere close to where it was pre injury, I was the longest drive in my local course averaging 300-320 off the tee now I rarely hit it 280, its taking too long to be confident on transferring weight to my lead knee because it hasn't heal completely and Doctor says it will take another whole year aprox for me to be 100%

Anyway, I resumed playing with my usual clubs: TSR3 9 degrees, Ventus TR blue 6X.  T100 irons with AMT Tour White S300 shafts and it's been a nightmare, lost 30+ yards with Driver and 1.5 to 2 clubs with the irons (I used to hit 9 iron 160 yards now i need to hit a smooth 7, etc). wedges and putting is gold so that's what's been helping me a bit.

A friend of mine told me to try a set of T400 irons that came with AMT Red Regular flex shafts and its been mind blowing, my distance is back I just can't miss with these things except the Pitching (38 degrees) 43 and 48 wedge feel way too light and I mess my swing because it doesn't feel right the thought of me hitting a 90 ash gram regular flex shaft, NO, ITS NOT AN EGO THING its just that i hold back and can't swing freely because of the thought of loosing the shaft, meh, I don't know if I'm making sense here...

I ordered a set of PX LZ 6.0 shafts to put in these t400 irons thinking it will be a better fit for me or will give me more confidence to swing "hard" or really "compress" the ball but I am scared I go through 1. The expensive process of changing shafts (gotta send them across the country to the only shop there is where I live) and 2. What if I mess the whole thing and now these t400 irons become unplayable, swing weights off, launch, spin, etc.

I have even started to consider going to a regular flex in both my Driver and fairway.

What would you guys do???

Thanks in advance

I would just keep playing the T400's as is. At least until you are feeling better then switch back to your old clubs. Why mess with what's working? It is probably helpful you're checking your swing and not going all out, both for your knee and your game.

If the wedges are too light slap some lead tape on the back to get them where they feel good.

Hope you heal up soon. I went through the same thing with a shoulder injury and I still don’t have my strength back. First thing, I would recommend is to just reshaft the current equipment you have. If the AMT Red Reg flex feel good to you and are working put them in your T100. And try a Ventus TR Blue in a 5 stiff for the driver. As far as your distance goes, the t400 38* degree club is your T100 8 iron so your distance isn’t back, it’s just that the t400 has a different number on the sole. Remember hopefully in a year you will have much more of your strength back, so you should be able to switch back to your old shafts. Easier to do that than buy a new set then dump them in a year.

So I'm going to burst your bubble and say your distance isn't back. Looking at the 8 iron loft the t400 is 9 degrees strong than your t100. 4 degrees is about 10 yards, so the distance is all coming from the stronger lofts.

If you like the t400 heads better thats a different thing but functionally both are going the same distance.

Keep using the clubs you have IMO. Unless you just have money to burn and do not care about the extra cost of reshafting, I would just go to a shop and have them build a T400 how you would like and try different shafts there.

I played a round of golf using my wife's AP1 irons with 65g SR shafts; IMO her set is similar to T400 and T350.  I was hitting the ball much higher and further, but dispersion was higher, mostly due to the shafts being soft compared to what I normally play.  If distance had been all I was after in a club, I probably would have gone with a club head similar to T350 or T400 with a SR shaft.  Unfortunately, it was just too easy to swing out of my shoes with that setup, which led to unwanted dispersion.  It was very difficult for me to pinpoint mid or short irons on the pin.

The answer to your question depends on what you want out of your clubs, and how long might you play those clubs?   If you really like that club head, get the right shafts that fit you, have them setup to your desire and be done with it.

There is nothing wrong with evolving your equipment with your golf game. The body changes and your relationship with golf changes.

I was playing S300 AMT Reds in a set of T100's and then listened to friends telling me they were too light and too bladed which led me into shafts that were too heavy and stiff for me and played some of my worst golf ever... Finally back in a more lightweight and bladed set up and my golf is back where I want it.

Divorce what you THINK you should play from what you SHOULD play and you'll enjoy the game a lot more! Chasing an ideal is a fast track to frustration.

I would just stick with what you have current set up. Have you lost any accuracy with the injury? So you’ve lost 30 yards on your drive, you’re still hitting it 280. That’s more than 90% of healthy golfers. A 160 soft 7 isn’t bad either. Stick with what you know until you become confident again with the post injury
