Trail elbow help

Recommended Posts

I haven't filmed my swing in quite a while and after a terrible ball striking day Monday, I decided to take a look. I've really been trying to focus on not swaying, shifting pressure and not going into EE. Looking at my DTL view my trail elbow seems to be trailing behind me as I start down, may even be there by the end of my backswing. I know it may be caused by something else like, IMO, not staying closed or not staying in left side bend long enough, but I would like to see what others think is the issue and hopefully solution.

Can't help on the swing ( looks pretty nice) but I'd caution you to get some more protections in your hitting area. I have the same net and holes formed fast. Also maybe something for the side if the Shankasouras comes to town.  Ive had a ball come back and hit my in the face. Its not fun but the video is hilarious.

I normally clear out the garage but I didn't have much time to record some swings. Thanks for the warnings, I will definitely keep that in mind.

Lift the club up in front of you with a wrist hinge, a little right elbow fold, and a little lifting of the arms at the shoulders. Then TURN and keep that "arms package" (ha) the same during the backswing.

You're right that your right elbow gets too far behind you. It's a combo of you just pulling it there, and the pivot stalling out a bit mid-way back.

Thanks for the advice. I have had sequence problems forever. I can't understand how to get back to my lead side while still completing a backswing. That may not be the issue with my pivot, but I have read/heard so many times 'get left ASAP' but when I try to do that, it stops my hips in my backswing.

I wouldn't change anything about your arm position, just keep the head of the club outside the hands going back and keep the right hand more on top of the grip rather than under.  From there you should hit pretty straight irons and a little cut with the driver.  Video below might help.

A bit close to the ball and major hip turn restriction in backswing.  Then the right hip fires before the backswing is even complete, giving you a really small net hip turn.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

I felt like my hips were restricted taking these swings. I was trying to 'get left' early, but sounds like I'm too early here.

You get left early by rotating your hips in the backswing.  The right butt cheek working behind you and toward the target.

….not by shoving the right hip toward the target on the downswing.

As someone who swung with little to no hips, a lot of arms, flexibility and timing.. Figuring out how rotation and shift work has been tough for me. I think my intent has been incorrect this whole time. I have benn trying to go right then left, not trying to rotate in a manner that gets pressure left. I have dabbled a bit with that before but I was under the impression that I was doing a 'stack and tilt' type move and didn't pursue it further. Thanks again Monte for trying to help all us hackers.

I say this in many lessons every day.  If there was a machine that rotated and shifted golfers manually the way most pros and high level golfers do, the overwhelming majority of golfers would say, “I’m not doing this, this is a reverse pivot/weight shift.”

I recently had an in person clinic with Andy Plummer. Surprisingly we didn't talk about my pivot or weight shift at all, although I know I occasionally move too far to my trail side in the back swing. He immediately noticed my cancer, that I leave my arms behind and had an instant solution. The interesting part related to your comment is, from reading your material and watching your videos I knew I had to get my arms going earlier and had been trying. However, my attempt to get the arms moving earlier was always attached to my right shoulder, so my right shoulder would cause my whole trunk to rotate early etc. It wasn't until Andy physically forced me to keep my right should back that it clicked. It felt so unbelievably awkward that my brain itched. For the first 20 swings I could not even hit the ball. Then slowly I was able to make contact. Instantly I went from pull draws with occasional wipe fades, to actually pushing the ball straight right or hitting push draws. Until that day I don't think I had ever hit a true push draw. Now a month later I am getting more comfortable with it on the course, but i am still uncomfortable my aim at setup and visualization of the shot shape. Every time I get excited trying to smash the ball or get under pressure I revert and have to go back to the range and go back to the original feel, which feels foreign, which means I strayed away. TLDR, like you said Monte, a month ago if you would've put me in a machine with tour arm swing, I would've said “I’m not doing this, this is way too armsy”

I hold people’s shoulders and lock them and ask…..”What would you do to get the club to the ball,” and they rip their shoulders out of my hands.  I then say without doing that.  They still rip their shoulders out of my hands.  When I finally get them to lower their arms and hands, they say, “Really, I’m supposed to do this?”

Next shot, better path and higher club head speed.😜

I've been doing this a bit and I'm getting some discomfort in my lead knee. I know there's a billion reasons why that could be, but is there a common fault that could cause it? Maybe locking my left knee on the downswing?
