Yes he's a good resource and IMO so is Jeff Cavalier good video to start

he has been at it a long time and his message is very consistent.

I understand the conflicting information but it truly as easy as picking a nutrition plan that you can follow ( foods you like to eat there are so many healthy plans to choose from).  You don't need to be perfect just get started if you eat heathy 3-4 days a week that's an improvement

try to do that a couple weeks and add a day soon it will be 5 to six days.  Layne Is always preaching don't wait for the perfect weight program or nutrition plan

almost anything you do will be an improvement.  If you are uncertain that you can do it alone hire a trainer or Coach to keep you accountable

It's ALL true depending on how you look at it.

I'm kept from still being a + by my length (and injuries). Every other part of my game is still solid, but I carry driver about 220 max nowadays.

Most of the players I see who plateua at the 1 to 3 index level are just not quite good enough at everything, although there are, of course, exceptions. I'd say the largest "exception bucket" I have seen over the years is a group who are easily + 1 to +2 with their ball striking tee-to-green, but they have very "one-dimensional" short games that lack the level of shot selection that is required to get and stay below scratch. I know very, very few elite mid-ams ams and senior ams who don't have very good to pro-level short games.

This exactly ^.   Guys at that level aren’t perfect players. They posses the get out of jail free shortgame in almost every instance. I know of only 1 that doesn’t. And he’s still better than the average player. If his shortgame and putting went to another level he’d be +4 or better instantly.  But that’s an exception. And he’s not “ bad” at either. Just not great.

I'm a 0.1 with 18 of my 20 counting rounds being tournament rounds and I am working with a 23 year case of the chipping yips, so take from that what you will. You have to hit a lot of greens, or miss in places you can putt from, or struggle, but it is doable.

Just wanted to post an early spring update as to what's going on...
(and yes I am drinking a smoked maple Old Fashioned rn after a crazy stressful week!)

Practicing-  I really do enjoy practicing for so many reasons, and even on my crappy So Cal range/matts/weeds- void of "grass" while still maintaining maximum jealousy of the CC types and others who have more favorable practice conditions elsewhere.
Currently - the ratio is 50% swing/40% short game/10 % putting (I know ,I know... not worried about the putting/scoring yet... the putting will get increased reps soon..)
averaging 5-6 days a week 2-3 hours per day.  usually in the afternoon. (golf in the AM = no bueno)
Swing practice -focusing on trying to get to some kind of shallow/depth after being as steep as Mt Everest. Quality over quantity.  It's fun.. (except for that day last month when I had the shanks for 45 min at where "The surf can't find any turf" in Del Mar. )
Short game -  I've been focused on Dan Grieves 3 release concept for a year now and it's starting to really come together... nothing is overnight... takes time.  I'm still wishing I had the luxury of some good bunkers to practice in (I don't).  My bunker practice time consists of 3 locations:  Stadium golf (soft beach sand and green 1 foot away from trap), Singing Hills (big trap and nice practice area but sand is mostly wet and hard) and Admiral Baker (pretty good sand but the green is also 2 feet away and slopes downward with a 20 on the stimpmeter)
Putting- I have a Lab df3 and love it.  It fits my deal.  practicing speed and practicing aimpoint/getting the estimated slope via a digital level

Lessons -   Had another lesson in Jan with Monte at No Bogeys in Laguna (about 1:15 to 2.00 hrs each way depending on traffic).  Typically at my lessons there I hit 5-10 shots in 1 hour with a short iron at 50% speed and we try to figure out what main cause is.  (which is mainly steep and not enough lag/ depth). He sees it instantly.  I see it instantly.  Now how do we fix that?   It's not overnight. It's hard to undo 100 years in a week...  I am still working on it. There is no get rich quick scheme here...  I am getting better on the videos I take of myself.. will go back to him once it's more acceptable in my eyes and then we will be onto the next thing..
I'm doing video lessons with Dan Grieves on the 3 releases short game.  1 every few months.. it is helping.

Playing- I am playing some (not enough yet)... scoring is getting much better. I'm not going to get into it here in detail - but I feel pretty confident I can break 80 anywhere -anytime- from any tees.. Don't think I can go truly low yet. But we will get there. Convinced that the ultimate goal will be realized.
The issues I have when playing: I play as a single on random afternoons when I have more than 3 hours available to me (not very often).  I often get paired with a wide mix of hackers and it becomes a distraction of sorts. In a perfect world I would love to play alone and hit several shots per hole and practice hitting irons out of bunkers (I literally get zero practice at this) as well as other things.. Anyway- this too will change in the future... (yes still jealous of you CC guys)

Long drive /speed training  yeah I backdoored myself down this rabbit hole after an initial foray into Bryson's YT swing last November to get me out of Duck hook season.
It's a blessing and a curse.
There are many threads on here about speed and such. Many want more speed ..  So with that in mind here is a story....
My wife is traveling right now to see my college son pitch this weekend in Indianapolis (he did great today!  7 inn/9k's 1 bb/1 run) while I stay home with the hounds (perpetual toddlers). Just got off the phone with her and she told me the horrible news that a good HS friend of hers just passed away from Cancer at 55.  Life and Health should not be taken lightly.
It threw me for a loop (I was actually at the range at the time ).
perspective and gratitude for the good health I have.
What would you do?
I feel really awesome- just turned 58. I can swing out of my shoes if I want to(If swing is synched that day).  I talk to people at the range who sometimes ask about my freaky stuff and I am talking to them like I am 25 but they see I am not.  I don't know what to say about it.  Do I just go about it as a 58 yr old?  Or do I just say screw it and go about it as the 25 yr old  I feel like (in all places but one..lol). or do I wait for the eventual gasket to get thrown?
So that is sort of a blessing..
The Curse is that speed is a drug for me.  If there is any kind of speed tracking technology tracking my speed- my driver swing becomes this Kyle Berkshire/Bryson unhinged monster that I can't get rid of and I just try to go faster and faster and faster ( a blessing/curse also..?)
but then when I need a "On the course swing" I get immediately cursed.  I am not Bryson and can't go from one(LD) to the other(on course) fluently..
in the past week I have found a temporary solution - which is a magical speed restrictor/limiter plate (remember some cars had these..) it's my Pro Sendr..  It has worked a miracle this week.. and also seems to be helping with that depth issue..

Equipment  - I have a mix of 770 (pw-7i) /790's(6-3i) irons  and the TM driving 2i and vokey wedges( 60/56/52).  I got all these on a whim at PGA superstore in Palm Beach Gardens last year and was never really fitted. I have no idea about degrees/ grind/lies/offset or anything really. Just learn to hit what I have.  I have never hit a hybrid in my life, not even 1 swing.
Maybe I hit a 5w in the 80's?  I am not even sure.
I won a Qi10LS on Grant Horvats channel when it first came out and have a ventus red tr 7x on it (don't love it) The biggest change I made on all of these was the Jumbomax grips. Once you have success with JM grips- you can never go back.  The issue is that what feels good on my driver may not feel as good in my irons or wedges.  So I have been playing around with different grip sizes and grip weights (ultralight/tour etc) I currently have 6 different sized grips depending on club.. it gets expensive to keep ripping off new grips.. lol
After going down the Bryson path, I bought a Krank Fire Pro 7.5 which I paired with a ventus black tr 6x.  Absolutely love the sound of it and it seems more consistent despite the weird looks.

Good news - I have a full club fitting scheduled at TPI in Oceanside in early May.  I am bringing extra Xanax for whomever is the lucky one to draw me that day.  Wait till he sees all these grips and why the hell are you wearing a Prosendr..?
Lucky him!

till next time...

Keep us posted on the fitting. I have a feeling new irons are in your future. Do you see flyers with the 790s?

The 790's are weird.  I do feel like they fly a bit and seem to go 5+  farther than typical similar irons. Also seem to be forgiving..but.
I can't stand the sound of them. It's like a ping sound (the sound- not the club brand)
I would recommend them to a mid handicapper though.
Looking forward to the TPI fitting.  will post about it here.

You’re gonna have a training aid on during a fitting ?

We shall see.  It has become more of an appendage as of late.  Played a whole round with it last week  - except inside 70-80 yards.   It really helps me not to rush the transition as well as the lifetime goal of attempting to "shallow" .  Driver speed goes down with it on about 3-4 mph - which is probably what I need right now for control reasons.
Side note- I have fractured my right wrist 4x times and while not in pain..it seems to help.   Also bowlers always used to wear wrist braces..  I like it.

Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Fitting
rundown...

Had my full fitting appt with TPI yesterday.   What a cool experience!
This will be the Long story version-  It's fun for some...and for others it's weird....and if you don't care? - then just Skip.

BEFORE APPT
Scheduled this a couple months out.
I live 30 min away in San Diego
I currently have a mix of 770 (pw-7i) /790's(6-3i) irons  and the TM driving 2i and vokey wedges( 60/56/52) and a Krank 7.5 fire pro with ventus black 6x- all with various sized JumboMax grips.
Stopped speed training a month ago to get a more consistent on-course driver swing.
Had a 30 min bout of the Shanks about 6 weeks ago and put my ProSendr on and it resolved itself..
Have basically used my ProSendr on and off the course for everything outside of 80 yards for past 4-5 weeks
Hitting "pretty well" overall lately.
Have never been fitted before and mainly going for the wedges as I want to see about grinds and stuff as I have zero clue on it...

THE APPT
Drive through the guarded gated about 30 min before appt.
Greeted instantly at my car by a crew member.
He grabs my bag. We walk inside.
unnamed(9).jpg.b0e2bc029e10fb256e23738e77f1d0a0.jpg

I see my name up on a monitor. "Welcome Andre...."
shown the locker room where I have a locker with my name on it.

unnamed(10).jpg.11cc791ba08e07eeeb2b6fa0c0defaae.jpg

This is pretty cool so far...
I meet the other guy there:  "Chuck " who is also getting fitted.
They walk us into the workout room (that you may have seen on TPI videos) and have us watch a video with an 8 min warmup exercise routine.
After the workout I meet my fitter- "Hunter" and we walk outside.

unnamed(11).jpg.74af75e3998a7242b4bc740af3b22738.jpg

He asked me about my Golf situation..
I asked him if he wanted a Xanax first.
I told him a quick version of the crazy BS already described in this thread previously.
He said he has heard and seen everything.
Oh really?
How old are you ? he asked..
"pretend I am 19"

and the 19 yr old thing became a joke for the rest of the day.

He just said to hit some warm up shots with my gear.
what kind of balls you hit.?
ProV1x left dash..
Ok here you go..
I couldn't believe the grass..  I've never ever seen this kind of grass- as it didn't even seem to resemble fairway grass.  Looked Fake...
But then again I am a Master of the Matts - so what do I really know..?

While I am warming up he grabs my 7i and 5i  to measure them.
"hey you have 2 different sized grips on these irons"
"Yeah - I am experimenting.
Hunter are you sure you don't want a Xanax?"

He comes back from the measuring and I am still hitting some warm ups.
"Is that a ProSendr on your wrist?
Yes- want to try it?
I then procede to rattle off some tales  on why  I  "currently" need a speed restrictor/shallow control and this helps me- right now anyway.
You want to slow your speed?
Yes.
I dont want to rush my transition and be steep AF..

He then Measures a few of my Current 7i(770)  -  Pretty decent. 175-180
Notices that my speed and whatever and descent all are PGA tour average kind of.
Says we will be testing the 7i , 5i, 4i, and down.

Hands me my first club. A T100 7i with a STANDARD grip.
I can't use that tiny twig grip now.
just like what the chicks say ..
Once you go Jmax you never go back...
But I will try...

After a few he switches me to the 150 with Twig grip.
I start hittng it better.  Better numbers. consistant.

Has me hit My own 5i  .  Which is a 790
thing is going 220.
That is too much of a gap from your 7i we need to change that.  Speed is too high too.
Ok   he hands me a T150  then a T200 and the 200 seemed to work better and I was taking easy swings.
Here are numbers from the  150 5i (even though it says its a 7i)
unnamed_8.webp.231ed8b79011d1b993ee6c07f97a397a.webp

I tell him I am happy that my swing path is +1. whatever on most shots.
Told him I went to Monte last fall and it was +10
Took my Prosendr off.
Swing path went to +4-5
Put Prosendr back on
swing path returned to +1 .
"Hey that thing seems to work for you.."

Went on down the line.
Told him I never hit a hybrid in my life.
Not once...never.
Ok , we arent starting today either.

Got down to my 2i. which i hit long but big roll etc..
He gives me this U-505 2i thing.
Couldn't believe it. Twig grip and all.
It was like the gates of heaven opened and I was born again.

Drivers-
When you go Jmax.. and try a twig. when you had a 6 month duck hook problem.
Its no bueno.
Whipped out my Krank with the JM large and Prosendr.
Told him I need to slow it down..
consistantly 116-118/175 ish and decent but noticing that balls are fading a bit (I hit small draw)
Its because of the twig grips from all the iron testing and putting the JM big boy back in play and back and forth..
He hands me a GT 2 GT3 GT4 idk.. it didnt matter to me.  I couldn't tell.
Maybe hit a few straight. mostly hooks.  The twigs again.  Grip was acutally moving in my hand in back swing.
I really couldnt tell. Hated the grips. it's not the same for me.
So really the driver fitting was a waste of time/energy for me.

Wedges
This was a blast.
He just kept handing me clubs. never telling me the loft or grind.
Until we found what worked.
and we kept shuffling thru the wedges to find the perfect mix.
Short area there is immaculate.
I remarked that here in So cal we don't have anywhere to really practice with  decent short game area/grass- unless you are CC club guy..
The Bunkers were like real too!
Most wouldn't understand.
The So Cal guys do.
Especially if you are a public course kind of guy.

I ordered the wedges.
I ordered the Heavenly U505

I will wait on the irons till the new models are out this summer.
No go on the drivers.. maybe they were good? Maybe they weren't :  Unknown...

We discussed the Jumbomax stuff.
He says he has seen many more coming in to their fittings with those grips.
It's like an epidemic.
They will need to add those to their lineup...
He asked me "as a 19 year old what are your goals?"
"I have 4 years of eligibility left. "
We laughed.
Shook hands.
Gave me a cool goodie bag on the way out with a Hat and other items.

I went home mostly satisfied -those damn grips.
he probably went to the Bar.
ordered a double and maybe took that previous advice.
Golf is a tough biz.
Everyone has a story.

Great story thank you!

You know I played Jumbomax grips for a number of years proceeded by tacimac oversize.  I did not think I would ever go back to standard size grips until I read a post by @iacas where he said that if the lead hand grip is properly in the fingers the standard grip sizes will work fine.  I found this to be true and have settled on mid size grips.  Saves some money compared to buying the Jumbomax grips.

Thank you Nels.. !
Just trying to make it fun and interesting (but true)

I think my problem  re: grips
was always that I am actually Left handed and have a super dominant LH that always had a strong grip. Like 3 to 4 knuckles and no matter what I did it would revert back to that.. causing Closed face/hook problems.  The JMax grips solved that for me kind of instantly.
It could change eventually..
The road less traveled has many detours along the way
