D1 Men's Pre-Season Rankings

Agree with your assessment.
Can’t trust these rankings, haha.

Based on this weekend at Cal State Amateur, bringing in an Ivy all star might not be enough to save Stanford.

Quick perusal suggests Cal & Santa Clara might be an upside surprise this year.

Seller of Cal to finish lower (alot lower) than last year due to roster composition. Seller of Santa Clara due to limited personal experience with leadership (terminated early by choice).

More and more I believe college golf will head in similar direction to other mainstream sports whereby there'll be schools for real ballers and then schools for hobby players who used golf primarily to get an education. Going forward there'll be no Morikawas or Jalen Browns who actively seek and succeed both athletically and academically. Take a look at the rosters of Stanford, Cal or any top academic institutions, how many kids are there to ball the way Thorbjornsen was? Rosters are filled with future consultants, bankers, tech workers etc.

A Northwestern's recruit's dad has told all and sundry in his circle that his boy will follow in his footsteps and be a doctor once he fulfills his golf team duties. This despite Northwestern clearly trying to recruit kids who have aspirations to play at the highest levels. No surprise that said player barely breaks par nowadays.

These academically high ranked schools are predominantly filled with kids who use golf to gain a great education and enjoy golf as a hobby. Smart of the kids and good for them, but the schools will mostly suck as a competitive golf institutions.

Golf Channel's rankings:

Mike Small's 25th season at Illinois, just amazing to continue to compete with the best in the country from the cold Midwest....

The masses (media) are asses, haha.
If this were a stock basket, it would be a short.
Let’s see where Cal (dropped from 19th to unranked) ends up this year vs Stanford. Anyone giving odds on Cal finishing higher?

How many kids left after Walter was given his walking papers?

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

2 good players…the others who left won’t be missed very much.
Also, one of the two who left was struggling academically so it wasn’t a total surprise.
As @tugr said, it’s no longer possible to compete academically at Cal while tying to be a top athlete on a national scale (Morikawa & Homa).

Welcome former IVY player of the year to real golf. +27 after 2 rounds and 30 strokes behind leaders.

Looking forward to seeing yet another former IVY POTY (like the abovementioned, also with almost no wins) tee it up to try and replace Thor and Koala Karl at Stanford.

He’s playing big boy set up now. High level D1 tournament courses and set up probably harder than what he’s played in ivies.

Did not break 80... jeez.

Just saw he finished 36 behind winner and 35 behind a bunch after. Cant study for 4 years and give up that many meaningful/purposeful repetitions and expect to be of similar abilities.

Similarly if a kid is studying his a** off at an IVY, he/she can expect to be streets ahead academically compared to another who is hitting balls all day.

I know which one I'm hiring, unless I'm a manager at a driving range.😷

taking into account their best player wasn't competing, was still surprised by their performance at Folds of Honor (34 shots back)

As I watch junior golfers transition to college golf the past few years, it seems the most successful competitive junior golfers have two major traits as they pursue their dream school:

1) love golf & want to keep getting better

2) try to win junior tournaments & get higher rankings

Many who commit to their “dream school” early unfortunately forget to develop new goals or they burn out and/or find new interests.

We have been preaching this to the boy non stop. Set long term goals with attainable intermediary. Without them the vine withers.

Given how junior rankings are calculated and that where one places is the smallest component of the equation for JGS, I would drop the get higher rankings part.

T61 out of 78 players today... 7 bogies seems like a lot for someone ranked as high as he was. Was ranked No. 1 in his class in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) and No. 2 in the Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS) rankings. Also ranked No. 8 in the Rolex AJGA and No. 16 in the Golfweek junior national rankings and a three-time Rolex Junior All-American including earning First Team honors in 2023. I'm sure he'll come around in time.

Something changed - reminds me of Dudumaya at USC. Neither competed much the past 6-9 months.
Just watch, many of the top 2025s will encounter this phenomenon also.

In fairness, Jon Rahm shot 77 in his first college event.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.
