Scottsdale in August 2025

We are planning a trip for 2025. Currently August works best for our calendar. I know that it will be hot, but will it be too hot?
What are course conditions like prior to overseeding?
Appreciate any input.

It will be very hot, probably too hot for multiple days of 36 in a row especially coming from out of town. Mornings are doable but you will need to drink a lot of water, stay in the shade, etc.

 

August is typically when courses do their second green aerification the summer. Conditions seem to be pretty hit or miss this year and will depend a lot on the maintenance schedule of the particular course.  Overall, they should be fine. 
 

Personally, I don’t think August is a great time to come to Phoenix for a golf trip but if you are looking to play higher end courses a little cheaper, you can make it work.

I say this in good fun but what can we do to convince your group to consider WI, MI, or MN instead?

 

I'd pick another time to visit Scottsdale when the temps will be more comfortable.

As mentioned - August is the worst month to come play overall imo.  Hot, humid, the courses are drenched, courses beat up from the long summer heat, aerification multiple times, plus too hot and humid to do anything after golf.

 

But the golf is the cheapest! LOL.

Too hot is a relative term but I mean yeah... it'll be freaking HOT.  You're fine to play early AM just be prepared for it to be humid, still pretty hot, and the course conditions will be about as bad as they can be here. A little shaggier greens, possibly bumpy greens, and the fairways are typically overwatered (worse so if you're trying to play early AM).

 

If you decide to do the trip, I wouldn't play 36 (if you do, take the amount of water which you consider to be a lot for drinking and double it... and that's still probably not enough).  

 

Find a place which a chilled pool.  Because by August, unless it's a big pool with a good amount of shade, it's basically just a bath tub at that point.

I went to Scottsdale in August in both 2022 and 2023.  I would have gone this August as well, but a health issue kept me home.  You can count on it being HOT.  At least 107+ in the daytime and 95+ at night.  Almost all of my tee times were before 6:45 AM.  You will want to do the same as it gets close to 100 by 10:30 or so. 

 

The course conditions have been terrific for the most part.  Troon North, Grayhawk and Boulders were firm and fast.  Some dry spots, but what else would you expect from summer golf in the desert.  Courses run by the tribes like Wekopa and Southern Dunes were well watered, but dried as the day went along.  I was disappointed in Dinosaur Mountain.  They punched their greens a few weeks before I played, and they simply let it go for overseed.  I've read that it was in good shape this past summer.  As mentioned above, check the course websites for scheduled maintenance.  

 

You may be looking for a nice resort to stay at, but I'm a cheapass and have stayed at the Hyatt House in Old Town.  The room is less than $100/night if you book well in advance, and they have a full sized refrigerator.  That's really nice for all of the bottled water you're going to need for your stay.  😂

Seriously. I'll never understand why anyone would voluntarily travel to this H Hole in the middle of summer. Better golf with better temps in better places can be had.

So you still have 10 months to reconsider going to Scottsdale in August, that is the only good news.

Humidity in AZ?  Must not have been in the southeast before in August.  Humidity in the valley is rarely 30%
 

issue with August golf is punching of fairways and greens.  They do it in June and August.

Yes humidity, there is enough for AZ.  Yes, nothing like the southeast - but I am no comparing it to the SE.  It is a comparison of other months in AZ!

Nope. Yes, it’s hot, but if you’re using dew point as a factor in when to come to the desert, you’re doing it wrong.
