3 Woods on Sale

I'm looking to trade my driver for a 3 wood since I'm far more comfortable hitting down/flat than up. I have hit most of these decently in sims (I borrowed the TSR for a round and did fine with it), and I'm curious if anyone has any opinions/experience. This will be 90% off the tee, but I want to be able to hit it off the deck as well.

 

The list. All prices new except the TSR3:

• Cobra Aerojet, Kai'li Blue 60s ($160)
• TM Sim2, Ventus 6S ($200)
• Wilson Dynapower, HZRDUS Red ($200)
• Sub70 Pro, *Fitting-dependent ($130)
• Titleist TSR3, AV 1k Black ($160 demo)

 

It seems the one I hit best depends on the day, but I am curious about those that have gamed them regularly. Thanks!

Take it from an old dude love your 3 wood but keep working on the driver. It's more doable than you might think.

Cobra or Sim. Both long and workable. Also check out TM Stealth woods. Long and very affordable.

You don't 'have' to hit up on your driver, many pros tee it low and hit a cut for a fairway finder.

I feel more comfortable hitting down/flat, so I am looking at a 3W to replace my driver and potentially give me a little more off-the deck range. This will be used 90% off the tee, but I still want something that can go off the deck. I have hit the following at stores with decent success (the Wilson and Titleist have been hit outdoors too) but no one has stood out, so I am looking for some real-world opinions and experience.

Considering your stated usage of "90% off the tee", I don't believe there is even the slightest question that you should consider two clubs not even on your list of 3 woods to replace your driver.  
 

The Cally Mini 13.5 with the proper shaft does precisely what you seem to be seeking.  If you simply can't hit it off the deck for that other 10% of your usage, get the TM BRNR @ 13.5.   Forget price and buy a club that you can happily live with for several years.  It will be cheaper in the long run.

Surprised you are looking at woods with shafts all over the place.  Why not fine tune your preference of shafts then hit a bunch of heads with the shaft you prefer?  
 

I think you may find the shaft makes more of a difference than the actual head.  
 

I'm pretty convinced any major manufacturer wood head these days is within 5% of all others that there isn’t a unicorn head out there.  They are all good.

I wouldn't dump a driver for a 3W either unless you absolutely nuke the 3W then you'll be playing a club longer on every shot. 

 

If it's a no question decision opt for a mini driver or a 3+, something a bit bigger and with a deeper face on it.

Of your list...

 

#1 - aerojet 

#2 - sim2

#3 - Wilson 

 

Don't know anything about the sub70. You'd be a bit foolish to go tsr3. Least forgiving of your group. The aerojet and sim2 will be just as long but will be a ton more forgiving. 

 

Aerojet if you want adjustability and flatter lie angle.

Find a driver where you can get good numbers teeing it lower.
