Alternate drill

I recently had a lesson with a local pro and he gave me a drill/feel that I would like to have an alternative drill/feel that I could try as well.

 

He laid out an alignment stick parallel and outside of the target line, then told me to try and make the clubhead follow along the alignment stick through the hitting zone. The picture below is how he set up the stick.

 

Are there any other drills/feels that would accomplish the same thing? I hit the ball so well in my lesson, then it was gone by my next range session.

What was he trying to fix with that drill? Were you too out to in and/or steep? Sounds like a good drill if you want to hit a slingin’ draw (or neutralize an OTT move).

Sounds like a draw drill. Stick with it and make sure to do it at 20% speed for a while. Hit 80 yard 7 irons and 120 yard drivers. You'll likely hit a lot of weird shots, but forget where the ball goes when you practice this. You're learning a new motor pattern, which f***s with your rhythim and timing. Keep the faith, man!

OTT and steep. I also tend to stall and flip.

Thanks, I have been doing reps and near full speed. I will try this next time on the range.

The nuerosystem had to be taught how to move in the new way, this comes from slow reps and lots of them. You will fall back into your normal swing doing full speed reps

I've been on a long swing change journey and I'm just now starting to see some results. After how good my ball striking was in my lesson I thought I had it. I feel like I am so close to where I want to be swing wise that I'm trying to sprint across the finish line.

1. Replace the outside stick with something like a noodle or club head cover. Put it just outside the ball such that if you get too heely you might hit the object.

2. Put an alignment stick in the ground (or through the holes of a range basket if on mats) such that it's directly above the target line, and the end of the stick is over the ball and about a grip high.

 

As a chronic hosel shanker the first time I took a swing in this station I missed  the ball by about an inch on the inside... it really screws with my head

Personally, and I'm only speaking for myself, I'd rather work on something with an internal focus to fix the issues, ie., what body movement is causing it instead of using an external cue.  To me, internal focus work translates better on the course.  I would be careful though that you don't start dropping the right shoulder and going into right side bend too early in and effort to get the path more rightward.

If you want to move path one of the best drills os to use a staggered stance drill. If your right handed, address the ball and make sure your aiming a little right 5 to 10 yards. 

 

Then drop the right foot straight back so that the toe of the right foot is in line with the heel of the left. 

 

The trick is to swing a bit slower as its hard to keep balance with this drill.  Use it even when playing on the course. The more you use it the more it'll start to feel natural. 

 

Make sure your not snatching the club inside as wellon the takeway. You have to take a normal backswing. 

This drill fixes multiple issues. It'll fix path, Impact, plane, right hip depth and ahoulder turn, It will also give you the correct feeling of how and where your club needs to come from to hit a draw and it practically impossible to come over the top and steep into the ball with it.
