Pinehurst in Early December

This has probably been posted too many times to count but wanted to see how the weather, conditions of courses, and overall experience was in Pinehurst in December. Plan is to play No. 2,4,8, and 10 hopefully. Would love any and all advice even some hidden tips would be great! (Cradle will be played as well). Thinking 4 days and 3 nights.

Just know that early tee times will likely be pretty cold.  Not sure what your temp preference is.  If you're only gonna play once a day, shoot for times after 9:30-10.

It's NC so it'll either be 31*, 50* or 75* that time of year 🤷‍♂️

You could have anything temp wise like others are saying.  With temps, possibly not starting tee times until later, possible frost delays, and limited daylight it's hard to plan to do much more than 18 holes a day. Not sure what they offer for a quick 9 late in the day.

 

Conditions wise my opinion is Dec is typically in much better condition than in spring until May.  Grass will have gone dormant and turned brown by the beginning of November.  It won't grow again until April/May and only becomes more trampled as the winter goes by.

This is the correct answer, namely that there is no correct answer for NC in December.

 

I've played golf in early December here dressed like it's June, and I've been snowed in, at least by mid-December.  Your chances are better than anything else that you'll get great weather and playing conditions in early December, but all 4 seasons are in play then.

My son and I are going for 4 days in mid-November (11th-15th), so hoping we catch some reasonable weather. Our tee times are not until 10:30-11:00, except for #2 on the last day at 8 am (what they had, and allows us to make our 6 pm flight from RDU).

That early in November, everything should be fine.  The Bermuda typically isn’t even completely dormant by then, and a frost delay that early would be rare and brief.

This is kind of off topic but I had one of the best golf experiences of my life in Pinehurst one December. It was either 2008 or 2009. I was still single and had been working my a** off on a huge project for several months and just wanted to get away for a few days, decompress, play some golf, and work on my game. I booked four nights at Mid Pines somewhere around Dec. 10-14. They had a deal going on that for $140 per night you got lodging, breakfast each morning and all the golf you could play including cart. And you could play at Pine Needles as well for just a $20 cart fee.

 

I get there on a Sunday evening to check in and the lady at the front desk at Mid Pines says with a laugh "Feel free to make as much noise as you want tonight." I asked her what she meant and she said I was the only guest in the hotel that night. Anyway, I'm there four nights and not once did I ever put on a pair of long pants. It was in the low 80s every day and there was basically nobody there the whole time even after the first night. The guys in the cart bart just let me keep my clubs on a cart in the barn and I could come and go as I pleased. I played about 54 holes a day for four days and it was absolutely awesome. Won't ever forget that trip.

That sounds incredible! We had a pretty similar experience in Feb 2023. We had the first tee time at all the local courses, Mid Pines, Southern Pines, Pine Needles, etc. and we didn't see a another soul. Played early, had a burger and a beer, and looped it again for the play it again rate (which was very cheap). The only course that we even saw another person was at Tobacco Road, and even then, there were like 10 golfers there the entire day. We didn't have quite such good weather, but it was still playable and I wore shorts every day.

We did ... only rain was day 3, so we only played 9 holes on number 8. Going back in a couple of weeks with my wife. Looks like spring has arrived!
