DG 100 mid s300 vs Modus 105s vs PX io 5.5

Recommended Posts

I haven’t seen much talk on the DG 100 mid S300 or the PX IO 5.5, wondering how they compare to the Modus 105s or Steelfiber 95R

Lots of talk on the PX LZ, but not much on the PX IO

I hit the PX IO 5.5 and loved the feel of it, I’ve yet to hit the DG MID 100, but have plenty of experience with the Modus 105s and the DG 105 s300. I liked the PX IO much better than both so far, so the DG 100 Mid seems appealing on paper having a stiffer Mid section than the DG 105.

Any people playing the DG 100 MID, please chime in!

im going to attempt to see if I can hit a DG 100 MID at a PGASS or Golf Galaxy Monday if either store carries them 😒

If not, I suppose I’ll try out a PX 5.0 vs a PX io 5.5

I like softer and lighter shafts, but still have decent speed with a traditional lofted 7i (121-123mph) I think it may be due to using my wife’s 6 iron that has a 9i playing length with a women’s light shaft with 5.0 torque as my practice club in the house 😝

I think they're all great, but to answer your question the PX IO is probably just a little soft / squishy for most people.

I think all the new, lightweight options from DG have those players more than happy. If that's your background and you need a weight between 105-120g you now have a slew of great options. I've hit the MID on the range and they're what you'd expect: A slightly lighter-weight DG with a hint of increased launch.

Personally, I've found a home in the Modus line the last 5+ years and I'm VERY happy there. Historically, I like a stepped-profile. Normal DG's were always too heavy which is why I went to Modus120 and eventually to Modus105 this year.

I think that PX is a completely different feel across their entire lineup. The IO is not unique, but it is lightweight. For me, it's too radical a change going to PX and IO only makes that more apparent. As a "stiff" player in DG and Modus, I would be using 6.0 in anything PX btw.

I'd test the Mid 100 stiff if you like the px io 5.5. You are comparing a stepped shaft (mid) vs stepless (px io). Mid should feel a little more lively than px io because of this

I like softer flex shaft with some kick, no doubt

I liked the Modus 105s.

For a short time I had a set of sticks 4-PW with XP 115 s300 after stepping away from DG X100’s and found that the height increased a bit, but nothing crazy, same with the Modus 105s

I don’t really know El curves or beam measurements in shafts, but the PX io 5.5 felt like it had the most kick, while still being very tight. I get a similar feeling with a SF i95R, but a little less kick

The DG 105 s300 feel good to me at impact, but less kick at the bottom, I should probably try the DG105 in a Regular

I thought the Recoil 95 f4 I hat a few weeks ago was ok, not stiff or boardy to me, just kind of dull, maybe an f3 would be a better fit

Im finding that I’m liking the softer and lighter profiles, they make me feel like I don’t need to step on everything to get feedback I want and I’m still able to maintain control of the club face if I do

The DG 105 s300 is a shaft I could play, but not my favorite in the weight range, although, if it had more kick at the bottom, I’d like it much more, so the DG 100 MID has peaked my interest

I also like softer feeling shafts. I agree the Project X IO does a good job of feeling friendly but tight. It’s an excellent 105g shaft IMO. One thing on the IO, the 6.0 seems more than a half-flex stiffer than the 5.5 to a lot of players, including me. In that shaft I would play 5.5. I find weight matters most to me, far more than flex, where I err on the soft side. It has worked well for me. I got onto this approach after buying and regularly using a super whippy Fujikura practice shaft installed in a 6 iron head and I was hitting the best 6 iron shots I could hit. So good I took the practice shaft out to the course and was bombing flags.

I don’t care for the Modus 105. Have tried it a few times. I hit it so high I lose distance. Don’t love the feel of it. Modus 115 and 120 I like better. My current favorites are KBS $ Taper 110, KBS Tour 110, True Temper Elevate R, C Taper Lite S and Project X IO or LZ. In every shaft a fitter would say I should be one flex stiffer. I find either works, I prefer less stiff. I hit a lot of greens in regulation and I think it is all about tempo with approach shots.

I may look at the DG Mid 100 in R flex even though my “fit” is S flex. If I sense a very stiff shaft, I swing too hard and hit at the ball instead of turning through it. A softer shaft is good for my patience and that helps my sequence. I can check but I think the Mid 100 specs out as  actually heavier than the DG 105. Around 106g? That would be good. I don’t like to go under 100g in irons.

I played PX 6.0 (stiff+) for 15yrs, & PX 5.5 (stiff) for one year before switching to composite.  Played DG S300, then S400 and X100 in late 90s, early 2k, nothing DG since, except for current DG Tour Issue in wedges.  Never even messed with DG 100 mid and Steelfiber 95 does not compare to any Modus profiles that I've tested.

PX IO is TT/PX attempt to replicate old lighter weight PXi, which had a cult following.  I have the PXi in an old 2 iron.  Looks like graphite, but of ten shots on the range, only two were solid or normal trajectories, most were too low.  It felt weird with my fast tempo but nice shaft for the right swing.

Same here.

The Mizuno shaft optimizer will spit out super heavy and stiff for me DG X100, PX 6.5, C-Taper 130, but I much prefer light and soft….. under 115g, but over 85g

As far as the DG Mid goes, I’d probably try a Regular first, before trying stiff. I don’t feel that the Modus 105s or DG 105s300 play stiff, but I don’t feel much action through the ball either….. I never bothered to try either one in regular flex, but I think that I ought to explore them, and the Nippon 950gh/ghNEO too!

i hit an overly heavy and stiff shaft, much higher than a softer lighter shaft, due to the shaft causing me to change my delivery in order to get the feedback I desire.

At this point, I lean towards the SF i95R and PX IO 5.5. I like the crisp feeling of steel, and SF as well as KBS TGI feel the most crisp as far as graphite goes, but I’ve never hit MMT, or ACCRA graphite in irons…. The Recoil 95 F4 gave me good pretty numbers, but it drew more than I’d like at times and it felt dead to me…It launched a little lower, and spun a bit more than the PX io 5.5,, nothing extreme, just about 1.5° of launch and 300rpm spin on average, but it was a different club head, plus I was hitting of mats, although I don’t think I get much different numbers of grass ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (MP-20 blade in the Recoil  vs a Ping i230 in the PX io 5.5,)  the .. I suppose if I had golfers elbow, I’d go the Recoil route though.

I finally got to hit the DG MID 100  in stiff since a regular was not in the fitting cart, and I loved it.

To me, it felt as active as the PX IO 5.5 in a good way. I was able to warm up by hitting a few balls with a club in the bay at Dicks with a DG 105 s300 (which I don’t care for) and I was also able to hit a KBS Tour Lite Regular, followed DG Mid 100 stiff

The KBS Tour lite R was not my cup of tea, but not bad really, I liked it better than the DG 105 stiff, I only picked it up because it was the only other lose club available in the bay, and I’m not a fan of warming up with a DG 105 stiff with a Rickie Fowler copper blade 😝, so the KBS Tour lite it was by default’s, which wasn’t really in my radar, and now I really like the Ping Blueprint T head 👍

The DG Mid 100 had plenty of action, much like the PX IO 5.5, but in a stepped shaft kind of way. Very lively

I don’t feel that the DG Mid 100 in stiff was any stiffer than the PX IO 5.5, they were very comparable in feel to me.

I’m not sure if it was a different balance point, or just different heads different stores, but the DG Mid 100 felt a bit more heavy in the head than the PX IO 5.5  (I would think it’s not the heads or stores, since they were both Pings heads off a fitting cart, i230 in the PX IO at PGASS / Blueprint T in the DG Mid 100 at Dick’s)

The guy working in the golf department was busy, so by the time it came around to him putting the Blueprint Head on the DG Mid 100 shaft, I was getting sluggish, I really wish he had a DG Mid 100 in regular to compare, but the stiff didn’t feel overly stiff because it’s so lively

The DG Mid 100 s300 did not feel any stiffer than the PX IO 5.5, it was a similar feel in flex and very lively.

It would have been great to hit a DG Mid 100 in regular just to see the difference, but not available 😒, still, I could play the DG Mid 100 in stiff without issue, and I don’t like shafts that are too stiff ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Good feedback. The PX 5.5 io feels good to me so that is a positive. I just played a round with the DG Mid 100 in R flex and I definitely could tell it had some life. It did not feel too loose but it may be too light. I played well with it, I hit some iron shots that got up and carried. I did get quick occasionally and hit a few shots left, but nothing wild. I’d like to try the same flex in the 115g version to see if that tightens things up. Keep in mind I am very accustomed to 115-120g iron shafts.

I liked the shaft. I had been hearing about a stiff middle section in the bend profile and feared I would not like that, but it was not noticeable. I didn’t feel any particular stiffness. It feels like a Dynamic Gold shaft, a little easier to load than the DG 120 or standard DG s300.

I only hit a PXI once 6.5 and when it was with a bum shoulder, so it felt boardy, but everything felt awful at the time.

Never really got past tryout phase with the DG 105. They’re actually a few grams lighter than the Mid 100. When I tried the 105 it was versus the DG 120 and I thought the 120 s300 felt better than the 105 s300. Ultimately went with the 120 soft-stepped once. The 105 performed fine but felt more brittle to me versus the 120, which feels more substantial, essentially like the standard s300 minus 10 grams.

Could be the livelier tip that I am responding to and liking in the Mid 100 but I would choose it over the 105. But I want to try the Mid 115.

I didn’t know that, but they felt heavier, I just thought it was the balance point, because it felt heavier than the DG 105 s300 and the KBS Tour Lite Regular.

I really enjoyed the shaft, possibly more than the PX IO 5.5, but I’d have to hit them side by side with the same head to make a definitive decision

I didn't care for the KBS Lite's, but then again, I just don't like the feel of any KBS shafts that I've tried.  I think that the Nippon 950 NEO stiff and either DG Mid 100 in stiff or regular are in order for myself.  One of these will go into a new set of the ZXI5's next year.  I am still going to test the DG 105 R along with them, but I have decided that Modus is not really for me.  I think the 105's are ok in regular, but feel I am missing out on something.

This is an interesting thread. I've played Modus 105s for the last 5 years.

When I used the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer a few weeks ago in a fitting the top 4 options were

1. C-Taper Lite R

2. DG 100 Mid

3. Project X IO 5.5

4. Modus 105 S

It suggested hardstepping the DG Mids and Modus 105s.  All of them had an identical MSO score (4.9)

We tried the C-Taper Lite in the fitting and I hated the feel. Looking back we only tried the DG Mid in a head I really didn't like. Looking at the specs it feel like it's the Modus with just a bit more kick to it. Would that be accurate?

Short answer is yes, C-taper Lite Regular (light green, first picture) is stiffer in the tip compared to Modus 105 Stiff (Dark Green, first picture)   If you're playing Srixon ZX5 Mkii I'd test a modus 105 S and a DG 100 MID in the ZXi5 becuase they are nearly identical. DG MID 100 (darkest green, second picture) is just slightly stiffer overall.  I'd personally test modus 105 vs DG 100 Mid. A big box will let you demo this without the cost of a fitting. I'd call ahead to confirm they have both shafts in their fitting matrix (which they should, but double check anyways). If they don't I'd ask them if they would could contact their local rep to get it in for you to test.

I hope this helps!

Wild that the DG 100 Mid and Modus 105 are so similar, they feel so different to me. The DG 100 Mid feels so much more active to me, I guess feel isn’t real ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
