……And here we are. 6i is now my longest in the bag.

Presently start st 7i - been toying with 34* 7h.....it's just easier but gotta watch really firm greens - tends to bound then stop

This is my experience with my G425 7H. I don’t need it yet, and it isn’t outperforming my 7i. I could also live with 6i, but the 6H is just so much more consistent for me vs my iron at this length. That’s the end of it though. Wont intentionally buy anything longer than 7i in the future.

Yup!

Not sure how old you guys are but I'm 64 now.

Freddy Couples, who's about the same age, longest iron is a 7 iron.

Sure Freddy still hits it out 60 yards passed me. lol

Hybrids are better than they used to be so why not use them.

My longest iron also a 6 iron now. Playing the strong lofted Cobra DarkSpeeds. Coming from the 2021 TM 790's which were strong lofted also just not as much. Gaping hasn't really been an issue.

What’s a 6 iron?

🙃

I gave up on mine.

Which flies higher, your 5 hybrid or 6 iron?

😈

I'm a big believer in Tom Wishon's 38/24 theory.  He says most golfers can't hit an iron nearly as consistently when it gets longer than 38 inches or the loft is less than 24*.

Over the last 30 years, that has moved from a 3 iron loft to, in many sets, a 5 iron loft.

My 24* 5 iron is right on that line. I put a 5h in the bag last year and loved it. I've been swinging my iron much better after some lessons last week and my instructor encouraged me to put the 5-iron back in the bag. I'm not gonna lie, flushing a 5-iron gives me greater please than any other club in my bag. But when it comes down to an important shot in the round, I find myself wanting the comfort of a hybrid.

Loft creep.

My very first “good” set of irons was the TM tour preferred that I bought in 1989. The 5 iron was 29 degrees. So we are in a situation where it comes down to what degree you can execute best.  I really don’t feel the need to carry a 5 iron anymore.  I can manage between a 6 iron and a 21 degree hybrid just fine. The art of choking up to take distance off shots is somewhat lost.

Very, very well said.  I am older than most, even in this thread, but still play 714MB irons because I always have played MB's.  8i is my longest at 39°, then move to a G425 7h at 34°, at the small +.  I can still hit a 7i on some days, but at my age and swing speed the lie has to be perfect for me to get any height out of it.  The 7h is just easier from everywhere.

I regularly play with a guy that loves his G430 irons, which is great.  His 8i is at 33°.  My closest iron to that is 6i (31°) which hasn't seen the sunlight in years.

I was watching a few vids on Fred Couples switching over to having a lot of hybrids now, says he is back to loving golf and playing extremely well. Nothing wrong with it, if anything I kind of want to do it myself (although I tend to hook the hell out of hybrids 😞

See Sig, I start at 5i though. Hybrids are 2, 3 and 4. I also have a 5 and 7wd that I would occasionally swap out with the Hybrids and throw a 4i in as well. Haven't done that in a while though.

I have both a 5H and 5i in the bag, but the 5i is only played when I don't like the lie for my hybrid, which--for me--is very lie dependent.  Even then, I still often club down to the 6i.  I'd say the 5i is on the chopping block...been toying around with taking it out of my bag altogether and may play a few rounds without it to see if I can make that work.

Stock setup (11): Mini D (TM 300 11.5), 3W (TM Aeroburner), 5W (Callaway BB), 5H (TM M6), 6i-PW (Callaway Rogue ST Max), 54* wedge (TM Hi Toe), putter (Odyssey White Hot OG 5)

Minimalist setup (9): Subtract the 3W and 9i

Extra clubs that occasionally find their way in (5): 4H, 5i, 46* (Callaway Rogue ST Max); 52* and 58* (TM MG2)

I'm trying to find a 7-hybrid to replace my 7-iron.  I have a Titleist TSR1 29*, but I don't think I have the right shaft yet.  I'm playing it with an Atmos Tour Spec Red 75 R, which might be a bit heavy.  I am going to try a Tensei AV Blue 60 something next.

Same here, used to be a long iron player and creeping up on 54 they just don't rise like they used to (neither do other things 😆). I Love my 7W, it does the trick now. I only got a 6 iron down on my last set but I did just put in a TM Qi 6 iron to go between my 7W and set 6 iron. The Qi 6 iron is 24* and my set 6 iron is 27*. It gives me a low option for when I can't back down enough on the 7W.

😊 let me know when you get to the 9 iron as your longest iron.  My 8 hybrid is pure pleasure to hit from 145, from this 69 year old high single digit.

But even my 9 to SW are Cobra T Rail hybrid irons. They are so much fun to play.  I have 9 head covers.

Awesome!! If it works it works!!!!!! It all looks the same on the score card!!!!!

3 cap.  Play a 30* 6i, then 5h and 4h.  I got into those hybrids because I hate the extra offset most long irons have.  Bonus they're easier to hit and launch higher.  Bummer they're less workable.

In the 5h, I use the same steel shaft as my irons and run it 1/2" longer than my 6i.  Compact, heavier heads tend to work better for some reason.  Mizuno makes the Fli-Hi hybrids this exact same way.

5h is a very heavy graphite, only 10gr lighter than my irons.

I think once you get into the lower lofted hybrids that are really FW replacements, that's when you want to go light and long on the shafts.
