One set of irons for the rest of your days....What you bagging?

Great Big Bertha 2023 irons. Insanely expensive but managed to get them on sale. Even bought a second set as they aren’t making them anymore.

Recent Hole-In-One earned me $1,500 in Pro Shop credits at our club and went to our fitter and after trying Callaway, Ping, Titliest, Mizuno, Cobra and Taylormade nothing could beat my 4 year old set of Srixon ZX5's. I guess I will stock up on golf balls.

I would flip a coin between a set of Srixon Z745 and Bridgestone J15 CBs and be happy to bag either moving forward. (Z745's are my current gamers) 

 

Both are single piece forgings by Endo with unique sole designs (V-sole on Srixon and Pre worn leading edge on Bridgestone) 

 

Both feel incredible when hit out of the middle and offer decent forgiveness on off center strikes for an iron with no real tech. Can work the ball with both and aesthetically both are very pleasing to my eye from address.

I likely would end up making a bad choice.

 

 

I'm young enough to still play a "player's" iron, but I'm also starting to see my swing speed decline each year. If I want to play golf well into my later years, I know my current irons won’t suit me forever, and I need something that will serve me well for the next 35+ years of aging.

 

The logical choice might be to go with a set that has a softer shaft—perhaps a bit too soft right now but ideal in a decade or more, even if it won’t be perfect for the very end of my playing years. Also I would need a higher launching face with more spin. 

 

Durability is another factor. I love forged irons, but they wear faster and could become unplayable eventually, especially if I keep playing over 100 rounds a year. When I retire, I expect to play even more, so I may need to consider a cast iron that lasts longer.

 

In the end, I might end up making a practical choice rather than picking an iron I love right now. Basically a bad choice.

First choice Ping G series. Have 2016 Gs now. Can still “kinda” score on a bad day and throw darts on a good day. 
 

Second choice are S55. Love those but struggle mightily on bad days. 
 

Third are Bridgestone J15 / J40 Dual Pockets. Same as the S55 just forged goodness thrown in.
