What brand just doesn’t do it for ya?

PARETO

It’s snowed here yesterday so that means my home course won’t see play again until May. That’s hard to even type. Ugh. So I need golf gear talk and I need it now. Help me cope by telling me what brand of equipment has never pulled at your heart strings.
Me? Easy - Callaway. I’ve never had the urge in all these 35 years of golf to even try a Callaway iron or wood. Not sure why but……

What brand just ain’t it for ya?

PS - it’s gonna be a looooooong 6 months up here.

There are few Callaway irons I've looked the look of from the address position. A lot of them seem to be pointing left, and I don't need any help going left. That said, there are exceptions, such as the Callaway Prototypes.

I don't like the look of many Titleist fairway woods. The faces are too rounded for me (though I haven't seen their latest models).

For me it’s Callaway. I gravitated towards them 10 years ago when I started back in the sport seriously. I also vividly remember drooling over X20’s back in the day of the hot list and getting a set of those new when I was 20.

Fast forward to now and their marketing and image just turns me off. (I had a cup of coffee with the Paradym TD)

10 different driver sub models, 10+ different sets of irons between Apex and Paradym. It really waters down the brand confuses the buyer.

I don’t get a lot of the Ping hate I see out there. The Karsten story is a cool one and they make top notch clubs that flat out perform.

I don't like to admit this, as it shows me to be a churlish, petty, and unforgiving person. But:

No to Callaway - because they introduced the illegal ERC II driver, which then got Peter Kessler fired for criticizing Arnold Palmer's endorsement.

A less strident no to Scotty Cameron - because Tiger's Newport 2 is the Ping Anser, and I don't need to add to an already huge reputation and enormous success driven by piggy-backing of two different GOATs, Tiger & the Anser.

I can't defend these views, as they are petty and churlish.

PS: but keeping with the theme, no to Taylormade, for ushering in the era of the 3 week product life cycle

Also Callaway. Only club I’ve ever owned briefly was an FT9 driver and that didn’t last long. I’ve just never got on with their clubs for some reason and I don’t really like their branding style. Even when I first started playing my friend had a Big Bertha that he hit really well and I just couldn’t hit it. I was always a Burner player back then.  I can’t even really think of one of their clubs that have visually appealed to me.

TaylorMade for me. Generally speaking I’m turned off by their branding and image, but I’m also not a fan of how pear-shaped their drivers are and the aesthetics of their irons have never appealed to me. I demo’d either the P770s or P790s in a fitting once and hated the feel.  I briefly had a Stealth 3 wood in the bag that I hated, but that’s the only club I’ve played. I hated the way it sat at address.

I’ve just never tried a TM product that impressed me or suited my eye, and there’s so many good clubs out there that I can’t foresee ever putting a TM club in the bag. I have no urge to try their stuff anymore.

I’ve tried a bunch of stuff and I always find that there is at least one thing that I would like from a particular brand, but if I had to pick, I would Taylormade outside of the P790s that I had.  I’ve never gotten along with their woods for some reason.  Even the 790s, while excellent, had a huge distance gap between the 7 and 8 iron, most likely due to the sole slots I’m guessing.

Aesthetically, I would say Ping drivers.  It is certainly subjective, but I’m not a fan of all of the shapes on the crowns.

Ping - I want to like them, they make good stuff and I like their ethos and everything. But I'm a sucker for chrome, and they just don't have any (?). Not a huge fan of the sounds of their drivers either. I guess I could see myself using a Ping putter though, so maybe not qualifying for the question!

Taylormade is another, almost entirely based in this irrational dislike for how "bro" everything about and around it seems to be. A lot of their influencer / pro video shoots also just strikes me as contrived, forced and a bit cringeworthy. Oh, and I've had enough of the Tiger worship.

Callaway.

Ever since the first generation of watermelon-on-a-garden cane Big Berthas, that felt like a whipped cream-filled eggshell, I've never liked their kit.

I would have said Callaway until I hit the AI Smoke TD driver. Been averaging 162-163 ball speed with my TSI3. First hit with the AIS was 169. Second one was 168. Nothing under 165 in my first session with it. So, I bought one on CPO.

Tuned it in over the weekend with a more neutral weight set up. Long, straight, and forgiving. Don't think it will go anywhere any time soon.

Think I have come to the conclusion that I will game anything if it works well..

Callaway irons - I like their woods and drivers but for the life of me I just cannot get into any of their irons (excluding the muscle back apex irons). Something about them just doesn't rub me the right way and I KNOW that its not a performance issue or anything, its all mental and I hate that I can't get past it.

Callaway. No matter how hard I try I don’t get on with their clubs, even when I’ve been given them to try with grip logos down and not seen it’s a callaway. Just doesn’t suit me at all.

Ditto. The only thing of theirs that I've ever liked the look of was the X-prototype iron.

I've used every major OEM , i can't say any of them really turn me off.

I guess right now i'd say Cobra doesn't have anything that really appeals to me. But i don't dislike them, i played a full Cobra bag 5 years ago

I don't really have distaste for any brand, I've never had a TaylorMade club in my bag but that's cause they never win out when I test the closest was a Stealth 2 3W. Callaway irons for me are so-so but love the woods.

Most other brands I'm fine with they just have to perform for me.
