Cold sucks but it has a few advantages. No need for sunscreen or an umbrella or arm sleeves etc. No gnats, flies, or mosquitos. No packing excess water to survive. No changing my soaked shirt after 9 holes. I'm not wiped out for a day after walking 18. Less crowds.

I'd rather deal with all that, tbh, but I'm just trying to stay positive. 😭

Very true...

I also get to pack hot Machiatto and hot soup and/or cold chicken walnut cranberry salad wrap or sushi for lunch.

On the other hand, here are some other winter equipment that I use when playing in below freezing temps:

  [1] Merino-layered insoles

 [2] Fleece neck gaiter

 [3] Pass-through fleece mittens

 [4] Fleece liner socks

I don’t have a winter low temp cutoff because I live in the Palm Springs area and it doesn’t get very cold during the day.

In the summer my cutoff is over 110F.

I'd play in over 110F every round if it meant I never had to go outside below 35F again, lol. I love me some heat, but cold aint where it's at for me.

If it is windy and no sun, 40F is the cutoff. Sun's out and no wind? I can do about 34F.

Separate question, how many layers can you all pack on before you start to feel too restricted to swing? My current setup:

Hat: Toboggan / beanie / whatever you call it in your region

Top: Long Underwear top --> Cashmere-ish sweater --> Full zip fleece jacket

Bottom: Long underwear bottoms --> regular pants

Hands are the problem, I don't love  winter gloves and I walk so eventually my hands just get too cold to do anything around sub 30 degrees.

Have you tried any hand warmers in the pockets of your pants.  Played New Years Day in the 30s and that was the only thing that saved me (knowing that Nashville was going to be shut down for the subsequent 2 weeks was the motivation to be playing in something I normally wouldn’t)?

That is a good shout, I have not. For some reason I have always eschewed Hot Hands and the like for no real reason. Seems like a very solvable problem that you have pointed out an easy solution for.

Makes such a huge difference.  My son and I played over in East TN the weekend before Christmas and it was 38 and 40 with wind and that was a game saver for us both.

For me, there literally is no temp cut off except for the temperature where my clubs might break or the course closes. I tend to play in the crappiest weather because there are no fair weather golfers to get in my way. If it were 110°, I'd probably still be out there and enjoy every minute of it.

Oklahoma - 40* with little wind is not terrible. If there is no wind I can go down into the low 30's without suffering. If there is wind, it gets tough real quick.

Battery powered heated vest brought my 'feels like' threshold from about 38 down to 32. Cuts down on bulky layers. Thinking about putting a power drill in my speed-cart for teeing off.

Member owned carts at my club have covers and heaters but I find they make me claustrophobic and most are not well maintained and keep the fumes in. Not to mention cigars.

Same.  It’s more about if it’s sunny, the wind, and precipitation for me.

I’m from the South. 45 with wind just means 5 layers of clothing. I’m okay with that. Cutoff in summer is 90.

I'm from the gulf coast in Texas. 45 with wind is brutal for me. I'm sitting in my office right now and my hands are cold, and we have a heater running. The wet cold here blows through everything, and I cant move well enough in that many layers to not hurt myself swinging a club, lol.

I usually shoot about 15 strokes worse on a 45* day with strong wind than a pleasant day of 50 degrees and mild wind. My friends and I just joined a golf course so we are trying to maximize our membership, even if it’s sometimes a little brutal.

I'd say 45. I played Bandon at 33 and dumping snow, wouldn't recommend.  Got to get back there!

I’ll play in the mid 20’s if it’s sunny. Mid 30’s if it’s overcast. Can’t imagine how guys play in carts when it’s super cold though. Gotta be able to walk and get the blood flowing.

I realize St. George cold isn’t anything like Northeast cold, but yesterday on the drive to play it was in the 20’s. Play was frost delayed for 45 minutes until the sun thawed the grass, but it was still just above freezing when we started. Getting a tee in the ground was a challenge, but the hard fairways resulted in some long drives that puffed up our egos.

I walk and was shedding layers after two holes as it was sunny and calm. A couple of us had decent scores with most of our problems coming from rock hard greens. No way you could land on or even close to a green for the front 9 and we are apparently too dumb to stop doing that.

Have played in both 105F and 35F. As long as it's sunny the cold is okay. But the hot days occasionally give me a stomachache... Also played once when the region was under the edge of a typhoon. Used my 4H on a 155yd par 3, and it still went like 30yd shorter than I thought. Tried a low shot but the wind still blew the ball straight straight up, dropped into the pond at around 120...

Texas Panhandle resident.   I have a low temp cutoff, but it depends on how much wind.

0-10 mph, 40 degrees, and I'll play.  We actually did last weekend at 42* for the high, but maybe a 5 mph wind.

10+ mph, it should be 50+, but it will feel colder than 40* with no wind.

20+ mph, it better be in the 70s

The bad news is that 0-10 mph wind days here are very rare.  especially in the late winter/early spring.  But, they make mittens, hats, long underwear, and hand warmers, so we soldier through.  Pro tip, warm sweater/pants underneath rain gear when it's windy.  does a pretty good job cutting the cold.

Was 50 and sunny in Iowa today, bailed on work at 1, 18 holes alone, couple beers, some tunes, smooth 74 with winter greens.

THERAPY!!!!!!

Also off at noon tomorrow, have a foursome, breaking out the new push cart for a nice stroll for some more January golf in Iowa, Sunday looks decent too.
