I would basically play in anything. I prefer not to play in heavy wind though, I would rather play in rain than wind. But if the course is open, I will play.

Even a good bit colder than that should be fine. Extremities warm with smartwool socks, winter golf gloves, and a beanie. A good modern base layer, thin sweater, and a windbreaker. Walk the course. At that point if you cannot stay warm, it is too cold to play and the course is probably not open if it is that cold / wet. 
 

Thinking about how freaking cold and wet I’ve been duck or deer hunting over the years, golf is no big deal.

The only effective base layer and second layer winter gear for me that I've been using for the past three years while playing in below freezing temperatures is thin layer grid-patterned fleece fabric. 

 

Golf apparel companies have only recently caught up to this technology last year but other sports apparel companies have been using this for a while like RBX's running gear apparel for winter as well as Regatta's sailing gear. 

 

I think that using this type of gear is crucial for playing in sub-freezing conditions by allowing the heat from our bodies to effectively escape which actually prevents moisture from forming as perspiration. 

 

Using gear other than that or using gear that's too thick can actually trap moisture and cause dangerous conditions that may lead to freeze up.

That's what I love about living in upstate SC, We have mild winters where we can play year Round. We have plenty of days through the winter that's 50° That's my limit. If it's upper 40s at Tee off But gonna warm up over 50 by 2 or 3 holes I'm good. If it's gonna stay in the 40s the whole round, Then nope im out

If I don't have to wear gloves, I will play.  Colorado here and we have many winter days with no/limited wind and full sun.  High 30s is sometimes long sleeve T Shirt and anything in the 40s is fine with the sun out.  Once the frost clears, it looks like a NASCAR event with lines of carts ready to head out with a checkered flag.

If it’s not too windy, I will play into the low forties Fahrenheit. I played today under windy conditions with a high of 53*F. If you dress for it and wear a pair of earmuffs, it’s not too bad.

I’ve played when the ponds were frozen over and my ball would skip across the ice, lol. These days my limit is upper 40s with sunshine. Some of my best golfing days have been cool weather fall golf. Usually there are very few golfers out there and the pace of play is as fast as you like.

Yes, it's not always a player's choice.

It's more about the wind than temperature for me.  I walk and can stay warm enough with layers, cart mitts with hot hands in them, and a winter hat.  But cold and windy is no fun.  I think the coldest I've played was 6 years ago - high 20's when we teed off, but no wind at all.  Greens were a little frozen at the start, but it was a fun day.

Agree with the wind comment, no wind I'll play as long as the course isn't frozen (Especially since I overheat when playing golf, always feels 20 degrees hotter when I'm playing and walking). Done 40 with no wind just fine, but went out earlier this year in mid-50's and a lot of wind and it was freezing.

Living in Canada sucks!  Anything just above freezing is my limit, just not enjoyable at that point. Didn’t help last time I got my hand slammed in the car door before tee-off!!  lol.

We cut off 18 at 90* and a "feel like temperature" of over 100. In Florida that is a lot of June, July, August and September. We'll only walk 9 instead of 18.  

 

We don't have to cancel for cool temperatures!!

Played yesterday at 42* with 20/25mph wind and dark ,thick cloudy skies.

I am fine just above the freezing point provided it is not raining. Dress in layers and a good tuque and cart gloves between shots. I always walk which makes it easy to stay warm.

Living in southern New Jersey and being a sunrise golfer, as soon as the morning temps overnight go below 38 degrees, that is my cutoff. If I get a call from a friend to play during the day somewhere with temps 45 and above with little or no wind, I will get out there but not worry about how I play. But then again, I am in my 70's now.

My course closes the front gate when it's 32 degrees or less.  They won't reopen the gate until it's 35 degrees or above.  Sometimes we will get a frost delay when it's close to 32 degrees but the weather looks to warm up pretty quickly.  If it's wet and near freezing they usually won't even open.

 

Here on the High Plains of Texas the wind blows non stop, even in the winter.   So when it gets near freezing few people will even try to play.  There have been many winter days when I've been the only person on the course.  But now that I'm older and have more sense, my minimum temperature is 40 degrees.  If it's windy (over 15mph) it's more like 50 degrees.

 

I've become much more of a fair weather golfer.

Heh, I've reached mine for the year.  Season's over till probably late March 2025 unless I fly well south.  Winter will be spent swinging indoors and at the local heated range to keep the tune on the swing until outdoor golf resumes. 😃 Cold, damp and windy suxors.

If it’s windy, not that cold. But if it is a calm day out with some sun, I’ll play in any temp the local courses want to open at. A few years ago my FIL and a couple others played on New Years Day. It was about 38° and sunny with no wind. Didn’t mind it at all.
