Removing finish from Callaway Ti Fusion Irons

Is it possible? Yes. At home? Only one method: sand blasting.

 

Its a PVD so a vapor finish like that embeds itself in the first few microns of metal. A specialized place can probably make them raw if thats what you want.

I don’t own these irons.  Was just curious since owner feedback seems to be that the black finish doesn’t hold up well anyways.

I suspect that the welding marks created by having the TI material creates some ugly welding marks which necessitated the black finish to cover over it all

PVD finishes are actually very easy to remove.  Which is why a lot of black PVD irons wear so easily.

 

I stripped a PVD wedge before, and I used my normal method of a mild muriatic solution, which I use as a starter for de-chroming regular irons.  Even vinegar works quite well on PVD.  On the PVD wedge, the muriatic worked very quickly.  It wasn't super obvious during the time the head was in the solution, i.e. the acid solution didn't instantly turn black.  But after less than 30 minutes, I rinsed it off, then I used very fine 000 steel wool (and of course gloves and face mask) and it took barely any elbow grease to remove the finish.  

 

PVD removal is quite normal in stuff like watch refinishing, as a lot of parts get PVD, especially "gold" tones.  And faucets.

 

But for whatever reason, PVD finishes on golf clubs seem to be the least durable PVD finishes ever.

A few years ago I "satinized" a set of Callaway Steelhead XR Pro irons that had a sketchy black finish.  I didn't soak em in anything, just used a drill with a wheel and some very fine grit sanding pads and then progressively fine scotch brite.  Took an evening of winter boredom while I was watching TV.  I thought they turned out pretty well, and I still play them.

I’m considering having these sandblasted. I’m wondering:

 

a) is there any reason not to do so?

b) who would be the best person to send them to?
