The only thing I can think of more unpleasant than doing the same partial swing drill for an hour is watching a video of a guy doing the same partial swing drill for an hour...

I was watching a video with Brian Manzella last night and he showed a similar drill and talked about its value. Whether or not that's what the guy in the original video is going for, I don't know, but what Manzella was talking about makes sense to me. It's at about the 17 minute mark.

Since the guy in the video doesn't tell us what he's working on, it's hard to know why he's doing that drill. But that drill has been promoted by AMG, Ferrell, Maude, and more. Ferrell calls it "one of the best anti-flip drills for feeling how the trail arm should work on top of the shaft as opposed to working underneath it." I've also seen it referenced as the "hell drill."

With the "hell drill" you have to pivot correctly to make solid contact. You can't stall and flip. Its a good alternative to working with a smart ball/compression sphere type of aide.

He’s not doing himself any favors by holding off the release and having his finish shorter than his backswing. Plus he’s standing a little far from the ball.
 

Having too short of a finish holding off the release like that will just result in a short and right of target result every time.

For experts like @iacas, is his practice method (e.g., 1 hour per day, total of 10k reps) the most efficient way to make a swing change?  It seems like there is a risk of overuse injury.  Also, I wonder if there is a faster way to change a movement pattern.

I don't know what he was doing before, how ingrained it is, how his brain operates (some players almost "need" to practice this way, though rare)… etc.

 

1 hour a day isn't a ton. He doesn't appear to just be smashing balls every 10 seconds.

I have done stuff like that in the past though probably not 10,000 hours.  Long enough to get really good at whatever drill I was doing which did not ever seem to have much effect on my actual golf swing.  I think that the guy would have a better chance of improving if he mixed in normal swings with his drill swings.

 

Edit:  10K reps not hours as Iacas pointed out.  I have done 10K reps of different drills LOL.

He didn't say 10,000 hours. He said 10,000 reps, which if you do two a minute, is just over 80 hours.

 

He does about 130 in the video, and it's 51 minutes long.

From this "top of backswing" position. Any pushing with the right hand would more likely cause OTT than remedy it (if that's the problem to begin with). It also would, IMHO, work against the goal of Shallowing as the topic mentions.

 

Finally, he hits 5 fulls shots at the end, 3 of which have clear left-to-right curvature. Not sure how far into the 10,000 shots he is, but the slice is still there.

It really depends on the push. The way he feels pushing might be very different than the way you interpret it. I'd say it's helping him to maintain width.

Compare those swings to his prior videos before this drill and it I see that he's lost a bit of the steepness in transition already.

Pretty hard to steepen the club with the right hand basically not on the club. It’s a good drill but not a real swing so need to incorporate real swings into the mix. 10 with drill, 10 without. Something like that would probably be better in long run.

Perhaps, yes. But my point was that his two-handed swings at the end of the drills look better than his swings from prior videos. Not that there may not be a more effective drill - just that the one he's doing isn't not working.
