Pelz Putting Tutor vs a yardstick/ruler

bunta

Recommended Posts

Trying to improve my short range putting. Deciding between a $30-$40 Pelz Putting Tutor or a $2 yard stick ruler (4 - 5 ft long). Its not really about the money, but i hate spending on unnecessary aids when a simple alternative works just as well.

Is there something im missing with the Pelz tutor??

Get The Putting Board. Yardstick would be second.

I have the putting tutor and it's solid to focus on that start line, but the ruler can obviously do the same thing, I like the ruler because you can also focus on stroke length as well. I think it's good to have a mix on a few things but not to rely and go overkill on them all.

Spend an extra $3 and get a metal ruler.

I have a metal yard stick, I also drilled 2 holes in the corners on one end and put some small screws and cut off the bottoms to lay flat on the floor. I then drilled the smallest indent (not a hole) with a 3/8 bit at the 35.5 inch mark. Just enough to hold the ball from rolling off while I’m setting up to make a putt. I love it and do it every night while the wife and I watch our shows. It gives new great feedback, obviously trying to roll it between the screws without hitting them, but I can hear if I do nick them or miss completely. Really had helped me hone in on start line, and I drew a perpendicular line at the 36” mark that I use as a face check to make sure I start square. Super simple and effective and can be had for under $10

@MattM97 or anyone that has the Pelz tutor. I'm trying to decide on the width of the ruler I should be getting. The 2 options are 1.25 or 1.5.

Wondering what the width is on the narrowest setting on the Pelz tutor??

I can measure at home but a golf ball diameter is 1.68" so the smallest gate it going to be bigger than that.

Right. But 1.68" is along the "equator" of the ball. If im not mistaken the equator (widest edge of the ball) would hit the marbles (gate) if the gate was raised higher. Correct? Hope im explaining this right lol. You get what im saying 😂??

Either way... want to thank you in advance for the measurement youre going to be taking later. Looking forward.

Yeah I see that now, I can measure later today depending on what I have going on later.

Just purchased the HF 48" ruler for this purpose.  1 5/8" wide, and more rigid than the 40".  Hole in the end for a ball to sit, or to hang on the wall.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I have been wanting to do this for awhile.

My only complaint with the 48" is that it sits up higher off the floor and is a bit wider (and obviously longer). It was kinda easy to keep it on the 48" for me, but the 40" is narrow enough to provide a bit of a challenge.

And with the 40" I can go through my normal routine, grounding the club behind the ball without having to hover it because of the thickness of the ruler. I have both, but I've used the 40" more.

Anything that's going to have the ball raised needs to have the feet on the same level. Otherwise it's not going to be the same on the golf course.

So a line of scotch tape on the floor instead?

I agree in principal.  Though short term use of a ruler would not be a detriment.

Sorry for the delay, finally measured the smallest gate from the 2 closest points and it was 1.6"/41mm with my calipers.

Another alternative would be using magnets so you can change the gate size; the level of difficulty from diff length putts.

Just don't ask me what you do with the other 58 pieces of magnets.

Most of those metal rulers are aluminum, I don't think magnets will stick. Also, if you have 2 of them that close together (less than 2 inches), they'll be more likely to attract each other if they're not stuck pretty firmly on to the ruler itself.

I'd maybe look at hot-gluing some cap nuts, that would give a pretty good simulation of the Pelz marbles. If you wanted to make it adjustable, I could see cutting two slots through the ruler and using a really short flat head screw from the bottom with a cap nut on the top. Then you could loosen the nut and slide them in or out to change the width of the opening.

I mean so he needs to practice in his golf shoes, plus the idea that a golf ball won't be 0.05" higher on the course than your feet seems very immaterial to me honestly.  Like I get your point, but you never putt on a truly flat situation ever on the golf course so worrying about that kind of thing just makes a difficult game more difficult.  You'll never notice it either way.

And to add to your sentiment.. the whole idea of this practice was just to see if im actually hitting my intended line with my own personal putting stroke.

Good point.. with the aluminum and magnet.

But i did picked up a 48 inch ruler earlier. 1.5inch wide 48inch. Let me tell ya, having to bend over to place the ball everytime, is for the lack of a better word,.. MURDER. lol. Sh*t was annoying as hell lol. Felt like it was hurting me more than helping me 😂. And to add to this little experiment,.. i have to say it can get boring. After about 20 balls, i proved to myself that i can hit my lines most of the time just fine. Its telling me my stroke is fine. Ball tracked in the middle of the ruler majority of the time. But the ruler on the ground is guiding putter face, my body/setup/alignment (something i know i struggle with on the course) so its sort of cheating. Soooo, i guess this means its either my body alignment, putter face alignment, or i plain suck at reading greens.

Not sure if i can stick with this practice. Ruler was cheap enough ($6) so ill just keep it. But I do feel like the ruler is too slippery and its giving me a sense that its not rolling well. I feel as though putting into a cup is the same thing.

ill give it a few more days.

Similar to my experience. The 40 inch ruler was more of a challenge for me. Since it sits lower to the ground, it's also a little easier to roll the ball up onto it without bending over.

By my calculations, the 48" ruler is 1 5/8" wide, so the center is at 0.8125".  It has an acceptable "miss" angle of about +/- 1 degrees (based on a right triangle with side a = 0.8125" and side b = 48").  For the 40" ruler, width is 1 1/8", so the acceptable "miss" angle would be +/- 0.8 degrees (side a = 0.5625" and side b = 40"), so the 40" is about 20% more challenging.

With all of that said, most of my putting practice comes on a PuttOut roll-up putting mat. The lines give me similar benefits as the ruler with a little more variety in the practice session (plus a ball return!).

I was deciding between the 48x1 5/8 and 40x1 1/8 but decided against the latter because i wanted the extra 8inch. But after rolling it a few times, it was very easy to tell when the ball is not tracking the center line. So i was just using my own judgement whether it was a good putt or a bad putt and it worked just fine. Yes, I could easily use the putter sole to roll the ball onto the ruler but it required gentleness, and lifting away without the ball rolling off was a challenge. It just wasnt a pleasant experience overall.

for those wondering why i didnt just get a mat instead for a better putting experience. Its because I wanted something a little more challenging than mats. I can make 10 footers 10 times in a row on mats. No chance that happens on the course lol.
