Astor Creek & Meadowood - Treasure Coast Golf

So I have played Astor Creek 4 times this year, and Meadowood twice over the last year or 18 months, can't recall.  Figured I should post.

AC opened to play earlier, designed by Chris Wilczynski.  The grand plan is people who buy houses on this property also have a golf membership, but currently the houses are going up at a decent clip, but it's far from full. There are tee times available to the public until such time, so there is an opportunity.

Given that it's Florida, the course is, as one would expect, pretty flat.  The design is routed through (where there will be houses), so you have some holes with a pretty big distance between them.  The lack of a a walking option is my biggest complaint frankly.  They use the modern technique where the tees and fairways are all one length of grass, so as you scatter from the path you need to watch out for the forward tees.  The fairways are pretty generous, but the bunkering is well placed if you are playing the correct tees.  The greens are quite undulating but deceiving.  The ball will roll if you leave yourself on the wrong section, but not quite as long as you think.  It is a good members course in the sense that for the most part you will find your ball if you keep it out of the water.  It's not the most difficult course, but it will force you to pay attention especially into the greens.  Green fees have ranged from $65 to $110, depending on day and time, and especially at the low end those rates are a steal.  There is a very nice practice area, driving range on the right side of the first hole, and a short game area with 3 greens separated by about 50 yards each, with 2 or 3 bunkers.  You can use both before you tee off, which is quite a nice way if you are from the north and not as accustomed to the grass.

Meadowood.  Oh, Meadowood.  I played it last fall or the prior spring(can't recall), and well, it was in horrible condition.  Greens were as much dirt as they were grass.  It was sad, because, the bones are there for a really good course.  So over the past summer, they have invested quite a lot of money, putting in Tiff-Eagle Bermuda greens, and I believe they regrassed the fairways, but don't quote me on that.  So I was looking forward to see how things have improved.  I guess they just reopened this past week, and the lady said they were delayed by the storms that have rolled through the area, as well as cranes going to town on the greens.  The first three greens looked to not have really seen much change, but as I went further along through the course, things improved.  The 18th green, as well as about 5 or 6 other were pristine.  The lady in the shop said after another 2 weeks you won't know....  we shall see.  The fairways must have been redone now that I think about it, because the fairways were severely overwatered for normal operations.  There was very little roll all day.  The fairways weren't bad condition, but the tee boxes really need work.  There is also a new greenskeeper who has been hired, so there appear to be things to look forward to.  The greens were decent for putting, but they were a bit slow, which I was warned about.  Understandable, so I can't get too down on that part of it.  At $64, it's a borderline decision.  If stuff comes through as expected, the course will be worth paying more than that, because as I said, the bones are there.  You need to pay attention to where you are putting the ball to improve your next shot.  As it's never a good thing to see a golf course go by the wayside, I hope this is successful.  They have lost a number of members over the past few years, and it is unknown as to whether the death spiral has started or if is has been arrested.

I agree, Astor Creek is a fun round. And definitely a good members course where local knowledge will help on approach shots, especially. I'm down in Palm Beach County or else I'd be up there quite frequently while I can. A number of the holes , or at least green complexes, are "inspired by" some of the templates, though not exactly re-creations so if you are wanting true Raynor templates you'll be disappointed.

Astor is interesting. So flat, but fun greens. Several slope away from you. Shorter than I expected, really needs to preserve land to stretch it out up to 7400y.

I'd play many other courses before Astor Creek and with it rarely being on GolfNow I don't know if I'll ever go back.

I don't think you need Golfnow for a good rate.  When it's not busy the rate goes down.  I paid two very different rates in consecutive weeks.  The first was much higher because there was a convenience factor to playing then.  The next week was much lower.  As much as I hate the "golf course running through housing concept", I think the course will get a bit better aesthetically with some more houses in there.  There are some rides where you are feeling like some tumbleweed will show up before another tee.

I suspect when things shake out with all the new courses in the area, AC may be the most accessible for us normies among the "higher end".  Can't see 9 new private courses remaining private, especially with the initiation fees they are charging.

So played Meadowood.  The renovation is coming along.  Except for one green that had a pretty large spot of sand covering a dead spot, and a couple of fairway spots that showed some patchiness, the concerns from last fall have really pretty much disappeared.  The fairway bunkers need some attention, as they have a lot of stones, but the greenside bunkers are beautiful.

Given some of the prices other courses in the area are charging, this is a decent deal.
