Project X Hzrdus Black Gen 4 6.5 70g alternatives

MattBrad

Recommended Posts

I have a Project X Hzrdus Black 6.5 in 70g on my Titleist TSR2 head.

Currently I swing at around 111mph CHS, with 163mph BS, AoA 2 degrees up. However I spin at 2,800ish which is losing a lot of distance as I'm only carrying it 269 yards! There's no contact location issues either

I am currently on a speed drive which is increasing my numbers to 115mph and into the 170mph ball speeds, but the same kind of spin persists (or gets worse!)

Questions is are there any shafts comparable in weight with the same stiff midsection feel as the Hzrdus Black which will kick down the spin to a suitable level?

OG Hzrdus black or maybe Ventus black?

If you really want to ramp up mid-section stiffness maybe a TourAD GP or M9003 would be worth looking at.

I have similar struggles and similar speed stats + AOA to you (I'm only 1* up though). I would look at a different head if I were you. I played tsr2 for a long time and switched to the 4 to try and get spin down. Also you might be like me a steep player who struggles with out-to-in delivery, which increases spin.

I've been fit for the HZRDUS Black several times and each time the Tensei Raw White as always a very close second.  I play the HZRDUS in my driver and Tensei White in my 3 wood.  If you are looking for a smoother feel and maybe a little higher launch the Tensei Blue is another option.  I did not get along with the Ventus line.  Different profiles.

Thanks, I'm a baby fader with not much movement in it so that would increase spin. Is the 4 as un-forgiving as reported? Maybe it's as simple as sticking the 3/4 in and using a shaft I'm comfortable with

Thanks - had a look at the website and the TENSEI 1K Pro White seems to have the same profile.

I've had the same conflict with the Ventus TR Black, felt boardy and I like a bit of a softer butt section

No question I do better with softer in the handle profiles.  Stiff / very stiff in the handle just doesn't work.  Tensei are very good and the older models can be found pretty cheap (cheap compared to new ones).  Don't discount the Tensei Blue in a fairway either.  Good luck.

Maybe. For me the 4 is plenty forgiving. I don't notice it to be any less forgiving than the 2 (which I adored for its forgiveness off the toe, which is my miss).  I have tried the 3 and it's a slice machine for me. Does not look right at address for me either. Just a personal thing for me I'm sure... but yeah I would recommend finding a demo of those heads to try with your shaft.

4, to me, looks like a more compact 2. I love it. Want to experiment with moving around the weights this winter to get it optimized. Only have had it about two months now.

Stamped loft on your driver and what is your launch angle with that 2800 spin rate?

What kind of ball do you play? I feel like something isn't adding up here. I play a very similar driver with an OG black and swing profile to you and I soon realized I needed to go to a firmer ball (z-star xv) than the one I was playing (z-star diamond) because I was losing around 10 yards with the driver because of increased spin.

Interesting. I use the ProV1x and I got the numbers on a trackman with the RCT balls

Maybe it’s time for left dash but I’m a lower spinner with the irons

Yeah if you're already in the x and low spin irons I wouldn't change the ball. Time for a new head it sounds like!

Wouldn't recommend that; Left Dash will hurt your iron performance more than it will help your driver.

While your driver numbers might not be perfectly optimized for MAXIMUM distance, they're not really as bad as you might be thinking.

That said, if I was fitting you up for a driver I'd be trying to do 2 things. Raise your launch angle by increasing static loft AND trying to walk your strike pattern a bit further up the face vertically from where it currently is. Everything about your delivery numbers and launch conditions points to your strike pattern being slightly low in the face.

I'd be reaching for a shaft with more of a Blue profile type (Ventus, Diamana, etc.) to see if we could get the shaft to droop just enough to walk your strikes a few millimeters up the face without disturbing anything else. Yes, you might need to go with a shaft that spins more on paper (where golf has never and will never be played) to cut some spin in reality.

excellent post. I have a question related to increasing shaft droop to obtain a higher strike pattern: can this be achieved via more head weight?

Lower your loft. I know your launch is only 9.4, but when you decrease spin launch angle should go up, and when spin is high, launch angle tends to stay a little lower. It's (another) weird opposites thing in golf.

Maybe TX version of the G4 Black? I've found TX to be essentially the same, but a little tighter. You may be one of those guys for whom lower torque means lower spin + more distance, even though the  shaft is technically 'stiffer' on paper. I've had that confirmed multiple times with different fitters.

No it cannot. A lighter head and/or stiffer tipped shaft will do that. A heavier head will cause more presented dynamic loft drawing the strike further down the head. The opposite of what you want to do.

Thanks for this, it's starting to make more sense as I'd label myself more of a lower face striker.

It's very interesting that paper and reality can be so different when it comes to shafts, especially so as my last driver (Cobra LTDx) had the Ventus TR Blue X. So I'll see  what I can do by trialling a few and using some dry shampoo on the face for feedback
