Just based off shape you would think the df3 would still be a little more stable based off the size and shape.

The main concern for me is to get my nominal swingweight of D6 to D8. I don’t care how they do it.

Hey guys,

I have been putting with a Spider Tour X and looking to move to the LAB OZ1i.  Looking for some feedback.

1)  I have a stock shaft in my Spider.   Will the TPT shaft feel to stiff and difficult to adjust to?  I am good with the price.  But, will it be way out there from what I am used to putting with?  I suspect the Accra Shaft is closer in feel to my stock Spider shaft.

2)  Do your recommend the standard weight coming from the Spider Tour X?

3)  I am worried about the lie angle the static fitting is going to suggest?  I am 5”8” and use a 35 inch putter.  I know that is longer than typical for my height.

4)   I am looking to do the zero shaft lean.   My eyes don’t like looking down at the forward press.

Hi Pingi,

I have a Spider X and can compare the two for you.

1. No the TPT is NOT too stiff for you - I can compare all of the models with TPTs and Accra - I prefer the TPT on everything.

The Accras are great too and I like them more than the steel.  They feel softer than the TPT and are plenty stiff (I would not describe the Accra as whippy, even on a broom).  Excellent upgrade for a reasonable price, $400 for a putter shaft is a big ask…. But……

If you are going to buy once, cry once, I would recommend the TPT.  It offers far superior feel to the KBS shaft that is on my Spider and against the Accra.  - You will feel exactly on the face you strike the ball, and it will flex less thanks to the tech.  A fitted LAB with a TPT is it man.

2. The weight of the LAB will feel lighter than anything else, even if it is heavier.  This is because of the balancing.  My heavy LABs feel lighter than my standard non-LABs.  The light LAB isn’t too light and the heavy LABs feel lighter isn’t too heavy - I would make that decision off of the speed of the greens you play.  I wouldn’t lose any sleep over “should I have gone with a different weight” either - and if for some reason you DO, you can always have it rebalanced by LAB.

3. I have been fitted by LAB and I had my new-to-golf wife fitted by LAB via their online method - both fittings were dead-on.  I wouldn’t lose any recommend getting a putting mirror to make damn sure you are set up the way you are intending to be when you make the video for the fittings.

4. Def go OZ.1 if you are staunchly against a forward press.  The more I experiment with it, the more I love it.  You really can’t go wrong with a properly fit LAB, but the OZ.1 with a TPT is absolutely a putter you could use the rest of your life and not feel like you are missing out on anything.

keep us updated, good luck with your purchase!!

Thanks for this review manVSgolf, I'm still waiting on mine, haven't even received the production email yet..

How do you like that face vs. the Mezz.max so far, have you noticed anything with pace control?

Thanks again!

I don’t feel like there are hot spots on any of my LABs.  Personally, I still prefer the feel and sound of the Oz.1 over all of the others.  The Mezz Max is wonderful too, but I love that steel insert and the solidness of the Oz.  I would still use a 2.1 if my life depended on it thanks to how on-rails it is and the consistency throughout the face, but if they made a 2.1 with an insert (especially something like teryllium), THAT would be my holy grail ha!!

In my experience and from what I’ve seen testing them: the larger the model, the more consistency on mis hits.  I am going to test shafts vs each other on mis hits soon, I’m in my last phase of clearing out an area to actually be able to show this.

Can anyone compare the amount of onset on MEZZ MAX and OZ1?

I tried DF3, but to me, it looked like the face was pointing to the left.

As someone who has only ever used stock steel shafts in putters and wants to move to LAB, I'm not sure I understand putter shaft flex and how it could be too stiff (or too whippy). What's the result if either of these are true, and what determines if you should go stiff/softer? Is it just feel or anything to do with stroke?

This is funny to me just bc I grew up in a day of the best putters in the world using an 8802 with a softer shaft for more feel.

The whole premise in my mind with the lab is to minimize any variables and having the shaft flex would be one of those.  In my limited testing the Accra feels plenty stiff with a good feel but would guess at heavier weights or longer lengths it could have a little kick on a longer putt

I have had the DF3 with both steel and TPT.  My opinion on the steel shaft is that it is light and feels cheap with the aluminum head combo.  I don't think it's too whippy.  I think steel would be fine if LAB could source a quality KBS shaft again.  TPT is heavier, smoother, feels better and provides better feedback that the steel.  There is a difference between it and this particular steel shaft.  YMMV

I played a stock Scotty phantom x5.5 to good effect. I then went and tried a stability tour shaft in it - hated it. It lost the flex that I was used to. It was then that I realized there's a thing as too-stiff for putter shafts. I then put a Mitsubishi Mmt on it with my own 2" .390 adapter. Again, it threw me off due to the lack of flex. Am back in a stock B3 Santa Fe until my Oz.1i ships.

Now for my comparisons. Owned a DF3, and hit both Oz.1, Oz1.i and Mezz.

Insert OZ.1i has a vibration off the face that feels like a steel putter. I loved this. Only very slightly hotter than DF. Nothing like white hot or TM surlyn.

Non-insert OZ 10-15ft dispersion on greens was awesome. BUT for longer putts I always feel like I have to add more power than w/ my Scottys. Felt better than the Mezz available and much better dispersion. Backswing was more stable for me.

Might as well be the same backswing as DF3.

I love the compact shape. Spinning along the shaft's axis in my hand is fun as the putter head just spins evenly. The other Labs could never!

I'm glad I ordered with the 2* press. If you're dialed with a df3 just stay with the press!

I 100% agree it's their best work yet.

Received my OZ.1 last week. Ordered about a day after launch. I did NOT pay for any shaft upgrade. I have a stock DF3 and have been putting great with it, but I did tend to leave a bunch of putts short hence the appeal of a faster face on OZ.1.

I got it out to the course yesterday and for me feel and distance control were outstanding. Made some par saves I shouldn't have and for the most part don't recall any putt left short. Loved the roll the new face puts on the ball. Absolutely consider the OZ.1 some of their best work and will continue to use this model, no matter how much I love the DF3.

I owned a Mezz in the past with Accra shaft and didn't get along with it. I know the TPT shaft is world class, but just couldn't convince myself to spend that kind of money when I liked the feel and weight of their KBS steel stock offering. To each their own... If I bought a broomstick then no question I would pay for the TPT given the additional length.

I also ordered it 0 degree as I love Garsen Quad Tour grip and couldn't resist the temptation. I really like LAB's pistol grip and having the forward press does take a little thought out of your set up so will continue to test and worse comes to worse can always send it back to have it setup with the 2 degree forward press and pistol grip but for now, being able to have my preferred grip on a forgiving and frankly good looking putter head has been an absolute winner.

Just picked up an oz.1   Was always put off by the look of lab putters. I’m a convert. Spent 2.5 hrs on the practice green with it yesterday, I haven’t had this much fun practicing putting in years. I truly feel that the lab putters are an innovation and not just a fad. Having the hands in front of the ball from the press grip is also a game changer for me. Never been comfortable with a forward press, to the detriment of my putting, having the putter do it for me is a welcome improvement to my setup. Great looks. Great putter.

Be really interested to here anyone’s thoughts on going with traditional shaft onset in the Oz vs 2 degree Forward press

had a df2.1 and tried the S2S jailbird and the forward press really kinda messed with my set up and process, especially on the jailbird

to add to that- I like a soft putter feel- like the df3 feel. But enjoy deep milled putters and the ai-one white hot insert.

sounds like the oz1i insert is a lot more hard off the face than soft feeling?

wanting to get dialed in before purchasing.

accra or gears shaft?

Totally agree on this - what shaft option did you go for?

Have the Accra in my DF3, Steel in my Oz1.i and will be ordering a custom Oz1.i shortly and going either the Gears or TPT. Leaning towards the Gears shaft since its the one most similar to steel and I'm sure I can feel that the Accra one is soft and now its in my head...

Has anyone ordered/received one with the 0 shaft lean and superstroke pistol grip? I am curious if it is the smoother/softer feel like on taylormade spiders stock grip or the stiff dead feeling aftermarket ones you can get at the store. I really didnt want to like the OZ but everytime I try it at the store it puts a good roll on the ball i just need to see what specs they say from the remote video fitting.
