Fred Couples latest WITB

As of April of this year it was reported that Couples had been using a TaylorMade Stealth Plus driver but I think he switched to something new when he started loading his bag up with hybrids. Anybody know the details of his current setup?

thought he carried a 9 wood

He has mentioned multiple times that he runs Irons up to his 7 iron and the rest of his clubs are woods. He regularly laughs that he has “6 woods” in his bag. No 9 wood but he has mentioned in one of his videos that he has tried one but never bagged it.

There was an Instagram post showing he did.  He had the Paradym TD, FTI Squareway, and then a Ping G425 5 wood at the top before rolling into those TM hybrids.  Maybe @pga43 can snag some pics at the PNC.  Doubt he'll let him touch the clubs but maybe his step son or caddie can facilitate.

I haven't seen the field list so wasn't aware Fred was playing.  If he is in the field I'll try to get photos.  In the past Fred hasn't been very accommodating but maybe in this setting he'll allow it.

Pretty sure I saw or heard he and his step son are playing for the first time.  Would be cool given the hype around his hybrids!

I saw that post. Club champion I think.  The post is wrong. He hasn’t had the squareway in quite a while. I think he put the brnr mini in his bag in like March 2022 and has had it in ever since.

there are tons of pics of him since then with the mini driver.

Gotcha.  I had seen and heard about the Mini Driver, but wasn't sure if that sticked.

No pictures of his WITB huh?

The multiple Hybrids makes a lot of sense, and probably something more Golfers should do (including me, Lol).

It’s not sexy, but it’s smart. The reality is, I’ve probably tried around 30 Driving Irons and 4-irons over the last 4 years, and couldn’t really hit any of them consistently. And I don’t hit my 5-iron much better, Lol.

So the question is, why don't you then? 😉

Worst case you add number 31 to the can't hit list.

do these seniors still play heavy shafts like 120g irons?

Some do, some don't. In the recent Champion's Tour event that got photographed I saw shafts ranging from DG105 R300 all the way to PX 6.5 and X100. I think it just depends on the player and what they are used to using. Some open-minded players are probably willing to try DG105, Modus 105, Elevate 95, and so on. The guys who barely touch their equipment probably still play the same shafts they did 30 years ago, because why not?

I can relate to this. Never tried hybrids and always went with the driving iron in the 3i spot (cooler/sexier/stupid). My son got a 19° TM hybrid/rescue and I’ve “borrowed it” several times during a round. The thing is just hard to hit a bad shot with. Will be getting one soon.

This thread is definitely making me consider trying multiple Hybrids for next season.

I did test out a two Hybrid setup for a little while (Hybrid 3 and Hybrid 4), but probably gave up on it quicker than I should’ve.

I just found that I much preferred the Hybrid 4, so just dropped the Hybrid 3 and stuck with one.

But adding a Hybrid 3, or a Hybrid 5 to my Hybrid 4 is definitely intriguing for sure, and that 2nd Hybrid would definitely get more use than my Driving Iron, or 5-iron.

Do it - I'm considering the 7h, just have to figure stopping power on firm greens.....it bounds then stops, but the shots it produces are majestic

Ok, you guys twisted my rubber arm, Lol.

Just pulled the trigger on my first ever Hybrid 5.

My current Hybrid 4 (Cally Rogue ST Max OS) is actually 21*, and the Hybrid 5 in those is 24*, so if you compare that to TM Rescues for example, the Cally 4 is more like a Hybrid 3 in TM, and the Hybrid 5 is like a Hybrid 4 for TM.

Regardless, new experiment on the way. 😎👌🏽

I will be interested to hear how it works for you.  I picked one up a few years ago that I saw for a reasonable price in the used bin.  It is now my favorite club.

I've had the G425 5 hybrid (which is 26 degrees) for 2 years and absolutely love it.  Same shaft Tensei Orange shaft as my G425 3 hybrid.  Gaps well, goes high and straight.  One of my favourite clubs.  Hope it works out for you.

Yeah, stumbling on this thread, and getting insights from all you guys is probably exactly what I needed this offseason.

I barely ever use my Driving Iron, and my 5-iron is used basically just as a punch out club when I’m in the trees.

The first time I tried 2 Hybrids it probably didn’t work because I had a 19* SIM Max Hybrid 3, and a 22* SIM Max Hybrid 4, and wasn’t consistent enough with my strikes at that time to hit the Hybrid 3 well.

But my Cally Rogue ST Max OS 4 at 21* is my favourite Hybrid I’ve ever hit by far, and a 24* version should be a lot more useful in way more situations than my Driving Iron.

We’ll see how it goes!

Wait until you get a set of XL Full Face hybrid irons. What is what Buckley's tag line "it tastes awful, but it works?". Cleveland should add that one to their clubs "they look and feel awful, but they work".

Made the decision at the beginning of this year to bring the 5-hybrid more and more due to some of the long par 3's I was playing (195ish-210ish). It just makes too much sense because they are so much easier to hit. Funny how I was getting made fun of by some playing partners for carrying a 5 hybrid and now, with this Fred Couples video, I'm hearing more and more of folks ditching the longer irons for hybrids. I still have a good amount of confidence and track record with my 6 iron so I'm keeping it. But the moment that starts to get consistently shaky, I'll make a move to a 6 Hybrid. The Titleist ones for me are better. I like look, feel and sound when playing with them.
