New LAB GEARS shaft

Noticed this as an option for the OZ. @labgolf any insight here? Is this a cheaper TPT version?

I ordered it after reading about on their website. Sounds like it’s better than an Acca but not quite as good as the TPT.

Why is a shaft upgrade so important on a putter with no torque? I genuinely dont know if there is a benefit or not, but it doesn't make sense to me

It's not that the putter has zero torque (it wouldn't point toe up when you place it on a table if it were zero torque) - it's that when you stroke it, the putter actually torques slightly open on the backswing (but square-ish to the arc of the stroke), and then closes accordingly on the forward stroke (square-ish to the arc of the stroke).

That said, easy to argue the putter is even more sensitive to imperfections in the shaft than an ordinary blade or face balanced mallot. The graphite here allows for more stiffness without completely wrecking the feel, so you have less flex/clubhead lag to deal with.

@labgolf please jump in to correct anything I said incorrectly!

@labgolfam I also able to send my current putter in for a shaft replacement on the GEARs shaft?

I personally feel the DF3 with TPT is better than steel.  Better feedback, feel and smoothness.

This is off. It's 0 torque in relation to the plane of the putting stroke. It should not open it close on its own when you are making a stroke, that's why the revealer works. Lieing the club on a table does not mimic this.

If you have one and you want to feel the difference adjust your hands extremely flat or upright and start hitting putts and slowly go less extreme over the course of a few putts. As you get closer to the normal hand position you will feel the forced rotation of the club basically go away.

In order to keep the face square to the putting arc, there does have to be a small torque applied. I do have one, and know what you're talking about - what you're feeling when "too upright" or "too flat" is too much torque. But truly zero torque would not allow the face to naturally stay square to the putting arc.

In a recent thread, Sam actually comments the following:

"""

The first thing to understand is what WE mean by zero torque which will clear up some of the original posters questions/assertions. And please read until the end of this paragraph at least! Among the many videos released by odyssey today, one of them had one of their engineers mention that neither their new release nor our putters are actually ZERO TORQUE…. He’s not lying! L.A.B. putters have torque. If they were truly zero torque, the shaft axis would go directly through the center of the center of mass and the putters would have no balancing bias of any kind. Or in other words, if you laid the shaft across the corner or the table, the toe of the putter would rest where ever you put it down. If you turned it slightly, it would stay there. So any putter that comes to rest in a toe up position technically has torque! This includes L.A.B. What WE mean by zero torque is that if the putter is swung somewhere on the planet of on plane, the putter will not try to twist out of square when in motion. If the putter is out of square relative to the plane, there is actually torque trying to bring it back to square. This is what we have internally been referring to as CORRECTIVE TORQUE. Now that we finally have some focus on the nuance here, its really exciting to be able to introduce this term. So now the question becomes how much corrective torque do we want?

"""

Would love to hear more about this shaft from @labgolf.

I still haven’t been able to find ANY live review or testing of this Gears shaft. Not even a prototype to look at. Just computer generated images. What a leap of faith to purchase an OZ.1i build with it.

We'll..you have steel. Traditional, looks good feels good. Used for decades. Then Accra - better feeling, more responsive, stiffer. Then Gears - better feeling, more responsive, less stiff, more stiff. TPT - better feeling, more feedback, stiffer. All advanced fibers and better.  Just buy whatever you  can afford...not sure it will change your game all that much.

100% that's what I did.

At my fitting I got to test the difference between the steel and Accra and could tell right away that graphite felt different. Liked the stiffness and feel of the TPT better than the Accra but even though I could afford it... the price tag for that level of feel was too much vs just taking the leap of faith and going with the gears.

The odds that I try the gears and it's so off that I ask Lab to pull it and replace with the Accra are so slim I'm not even going to bother, and the 75$ extra isn't such a splurge that I'm going to regret it if the feel is identical. Anyways, I'm happy to report back when it comes in.

Has anyone received a putter with this shaft? I ordered a putter over thanksgiving and just received fitting advice. I’m going with a 47” sweeper and thinking about this or TPT.

It fits between the Accra and TPT so not too much of a leap if you've tried those two. The interesting thing is that your own interpretation of how it feels and sounds may also change as you practice and put it in play. If you are extra sensitive to sound and feel, best to wait for it to arrive in stores. But if you do that, may as well wait for the non-insert OZ to make a full comparison. That will be about March I think.

I don't think any of the shafts are "better" than another. The TPT is more expensive to produce because of some of the materials used, but those materials also make the shaft boardy which is a turn off to many players. Based on the website, it appears that the GEARS shaft sits in between the ACCRA and the TPT, offering a more steel like feel than the ACCRA that is not quite as stout as the TPT.

I got the gears shaft in my new custom mezz max. It's stiffer then the ACCRA, but not as stiff as TPT or the Stability. Overall I like the feel and I liked how I could get it in white.

Have you tried the gears shaft on course?  Still liking it?

Still only on putting green. I would recommend if you think the ACCRA is too soft.
