Suggestions on more forgiving irons..

rwhitlock

Recommended Posts

I have been gaming T100's for several years now, and AP2's before them.  I'd like to pick up a new set for this year and would like to move into a more forgiving iron.  I've been looking at P770's and the Callaway Apex Pro.   I'm not really a fan of the bigger, chunky looks of the game improvement irons, so I'm hoping im not looking for a unicorn.

Any suggestions on 'more forgiving than the 2019 T100's' would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rod

Isn’t this scenario exactly what the T150s were made for lol. In all seriousness I love my T150s, MP243s were very similar for me but feel softer. Both should give you a forgiveness bump. If you need more distance jump up a category to MP245/T200.

This may expose how much i don't know about the 150's....  I was always under the impression that they were not any more forgiving, but essentially just stronger lofted than the 100's.

The T100S was stronger lofted and very marginally more forgiving but same footprint. The T150 is a bit larger and closer to a different class iron like the King Tour, P770, Zx7 etc. It's a nice iron.

Ya definitely a touch larger footprint. It maintains the players iron look but is more forgiving. If you need alot more help go T200. I wouldn’t recommend going any more game improvementy than that. Do you hit the t100 short irons well? Id suggest a combo set if you just want some long iron help.

I do hit my irons well, and like everyone, I have my mis-hits here and there.  I’m 57 years old and just not sure how long I can continue to play well.  Hedging my iron game towards more forgiving.  I’m not in a rush, just have the bug for new irons 🙂

Check out the T200 and T350 irons.   NOT a damn thing wrong with either set, damn nice irons; just my predisposition regarding strong lofts, plus bought T150 set which blends easier.

I currently play 2023 T100 3i-PW, and have 2023 T200 17° 2i in the bag.  Had a set of T350, sold them to a friend and returned the T200 4i-PW set to get T150.

Cobra king tour is most likely exactly what you are looking for. They are probably some of the best irons I have ever hit. Super forgiving for players irons.

Also recommend King Tours.  I move between these and the Apex TCB 21s and these are way easier to hit while still looking like a players iron.

When discussing forgiveness, one needs to look at the type of miss is most common.

If hitting off the toe, for example, you can help that by using an iron with a higher MOI.  Maltby/Golfworks, publishes data about MOI, and other club characteristics.  MOI and blade length commonly go hand in hand, so be aware of that.

If the miss is fat, you may want more bounce, and a wider sole (which increases effective bounce).

If you hit the ball thin, skulling shots on occasion, look for a low CG.  Again, Maltby has data.

No iron is actually forgiving, some just give you a very slightly wider area to hit without losing as much ball speed/yardage, typically at the cost of spin and control and others allow you to hit the ball higher with lower swing speed and spin.

LOL You can be that guy... but this guy sees it differently.  Forgiving varies, and is more than just space.

Since the 90s, mostly played MB's, up to 2019 when I bought a set of 620 MBs and set of 620 CBs, played them to 2023, when I switched to T100, 3i-PW.   The 620 CBs have the same specs as the MBs, made to blend, only progressive lengths heel to toe, a smidgen of perimeter weighting, that they refer to as forgiving, only for most people aren't nearly as forgiving as cavity backs typically are.

True, forgiveness in a head = more space to hit-and-miss, with that comes perimeter weighting, a larger sweet spot, oftentimes lighter head weight with a more playable low and back center of gravity which helps to get the ball up.

For some years, starting in 2006, I played Callaway's original x-forged, 2i-PW with PX 6.0.  They are a cavity backed iron with relatively the same size head and specs as then, Callaway's MB, and other OEM MBs.  Then Callaway's MB was far easier to hit than my 670 MBs.  But to Callaway's surprise, most people struggled to hit the original X-Forged, complained loud, so about 11 months later, Callaway remade the line and reintroduced them.  Average Joe could then hit them more easily.  My point is "forgiving" is NOT as simple as you make it out to be.  If it were that simple, Ralph Maltby's wouldn't have spent large sums of money developing his MPF spec chart.  Another man's perspective.  Have a pleasant day.

As much as I'd like to agree with other posts here, I have both T150 & T100 sets.  I can't say the smidgen in size (space) difference and internals make T150 more forgiving than T100.  My understanding, the internals of T150 were designed to accommodate 2' stronger lofts, spin and trajectory issues.  T100 is more popular than T150 because of the T100 size, it's supposed to be slightly more forgiving than 620 MB or CB, and only 1" stronger lofts.

No experience with King Tour.

Titleist T150 is said to be more forgiving due to an entirely different internal head design; it's slightly larger, lofts are 2' stronger than T100; yet, I haven't encountered any more forgiveness' than I notice with T100, and I play to 4-5 index.  Even though I use the sweet spot most of the time, I have my crappy swing days too.  Just sharing my experience... 🙂

I got a go play 😒 golf...  🙂

I am personally a fan of the hollow body Ping irons.

I am an absolutely terrible ball striker and the i525 are very special to me.  I have a friend that has worked his way down to about a 10-12 handicap after becoming completely addicted and he just got fit and they put him in a set of i530s that blew everything out of the water for him.  I'm a firm believer that the i500 series/P700 series and all the other comparable irons are the greatest advancement in iron technology that we've seen in years and they get better feeling/performing every version of the irons (IMO).

No such thing too be honest. Forgiveness is really only warranted on the top end of your irons. Probably 6, 5 and 4 iron. For 7 iron on down, you should aim more for feel versus forgiveness. T100’s are fine and possibly the T200’s

If most of the opinions are based on Titleist irons I myself switched my 7-5 620mb’s to T100’s and although I’d say they are a touch easier to hit, when you miss the sweet spot you will know when you miss it. Handicaps aside, no matter how good you strike the ball you’re bound to miss the sweet spot several times. The T100 does help a little with mishits but if in the Titleist family looking for forgiveness I’d start at T200 and upwards. Mis hitting my U505 driving iron has no feel comparison to the T100 or 620s, just look at the design of that club compared to others.

Forgiveness is also relative to the user, something that can be forgiving to me will not be to the next person. I also second JPX irons, 790s, i530s, basically anything with foam inserts as forgiving.
