Ping tour black 2.0 vs Ventus black?

Joesti

Recommended Posts

So I am currently gaming a g430 max 10.5 with a chrome tour black 2.0 65x. I really like the shaft/head combo but ive always been curious about a ventus velocore driver shaft. The only thing is all the local fitting places dont have many ventus velocore shafts and have 0 ventus shafts for ping heads. If i were to go ventus what would be a close match to the tour 2.0 black? Is the ventus black a close match? Its so freaking hard to find anything on the bend profile for the ping shafts. I know I get on with hzrdus black gen 4 and also the denali black. I hit the tour 2.0 black better than both tho. If it helps for a recommendation im around 108-112 avg swing speed. Thanks.

This is an endorsement of Ty's post above.  This was discussed on here a month or so back.  I'll see if I can find it and link it here.

The Tour 2.0 Black and Ventus Black don't have a ton in common other than the name.  Ironically, despite being called a "Black" shaft, the Ping Tour 2.0 Black does not really follow the same EI curve as many of the "low/low" "Black" shafts out there.  It's really just a "tighter" or more stout version of the Chrome, which is also a "blueboard" sort of profile (rather than "whiteboard," if we want to oversimplify).  Ventus Black is a closer match to PX Hzrdus Black.

IN GENERAL, OG Ventus Blue (or the new Ventus Blue Velocore+) might be the most similar comp, with some slight but notable differences for the discerning golfer.  Ventus Blue will see a less rapid drop off in stiffness from the handle, and is likely to hinge a touch lower down the shaft, relatively closer to the tip (still should be a hinge feeling in both).  Ventus Blue might feel a tad tighter/tougher to load than Tour 2.0 Black, which is relatively softer through more of the middle portion of the shaft before stiffening up in the tip.  Ventus Blue is also has some slightly lower launch propensity characteristics than Tour Black and is (apparently?) more counterbalanced than Tour Black.  There's enough minor differences in profile here that it's not necessarily a great 1:1 comparison, but may be the closest in my estimation.  Others may come along and say differently.

Of course, minor tweaks and differences will exist as you go up and down in flex and weight, and shaft tipping (or not tipping) has the ability to tweak feel, as well.

Sometimes it's better to not go down the rabbit hole and stick with what is working, especially if you don't have access to the ability to test.  These shafts are not exactly cheap...

Man, that was a GREAT explanation.  Well done, Sir!

Man thank you! So This has me thinking about grabbing a OG ventus blue 6x off of ebay used. Worst case scenario i can sell it again if it doesnt work.

Ping tour black 2.0 felt like a tweener between the Ventus blue and black to me.  The again feel is subjective.  I'd say something like the Diamana ZF/GT is closer in feel to the tour black 2.0, IMO.  Hopefully the Ventus Blue ends up working out for you though.

Felt slightly stiffer more one piece than blue but less stiff than black?

Ventus TR Blue would play stiffer than original Blue, just to confuse the waters.

I actually think I may like a slight bit more load than the ping black so im hoping the og blue gives me that.

I felt as though both OG and Velocre+ blue had slightly more kick than the black 2.0.

Got the Ventus blue today. I may be early in saying this but… this shaft is gods gift to earth🤣 played 27 holes on the simulator with it. First things first this shaft is 1/2 longer than my tour black. I’m going to cut it down and regrrip it but I couldn’t wait to try it. I just gripped down some. Feel wise it’s completely different from the tour black 2.0 65x imo. On the waggle it had much more play which I was nervous about. First swing I felt like I didn’t go after it at all and my club speed was up 2-3 mph and ball speed was up. Launch is about 1 degree higher but spin stayed consistent in the 22-2400 are a good swings. Had a few I left the face open slightly and spin was still only 2800 on a block. I feel like I can make a normal not go after it swing and I lose nothing swing speed wise. In terms of feel there is much more load unload feeling than the tour black. I felt like with the black if I made a smoother swing I would leave the face open but don’t have that with the Ventus blue. My normal swing has went from straight or slight fade with the ping black to straight to slight draw with the Ventus blue. 10/10 would recommend if your not super aggressive on transition.

One man’s opinion:

I can easily play PX irons, usually 6.0 or 6.5 and I do not like the PING Tour Black 2.0 at all.

I am very sensitive to shaft profiles and weight though, so other people may have a different experience.

Ping Tour Black has a softer mid section, something that definitely doesn't apply to Project X.

ah ok cool. Maybe something like a Modus 115 so. The middle section doesn’t feel very soft to me like a project x lz or modus 120 tho

It's definitely not that pronounced.

I'm not immediately thinking of a great irons analogue.  Maybe it'll come to me...

Went cycling through Golf Shaft Reviews just now, for a surface level EI curve similarity,  to create a starting point.  Most of the graphs I've seen that have a similarity are such that the softness bump is closer to the tip for iron shafts than it is for the Ping Black or Chrome shafts.

The one I've seen that could be similar is the MMT.  Might depend on the specific weight and flex, but it could be a starting point.  <shrug>

Ventus Black way stiffer feeling at comparable weight ... imo Ping Black 2.0 doesnt feel stiff at all, plenty of play in it ... thats why I kept stock setup in my bag, I want 3 wood to feel "loosest." I just wish Ping would include uncut specs, as it also feels lighter than 75 grams.
