Torching a spider X

Has anyone disassembled a spider tour x and torched it like Rorys putter? Im very tempted to do the same thing.

I’ve disassembled a spider x before when the insert and sole plate were both needing replacement or repair. Not that hard to get apart. The torching should be pretty straight forward after you get it apart.

If you follow thru with this, please have a phone ready to take pix along the way.   It looks like you'll just need to remove the sole plate, that TaylorMade badge in the back, the sole weights and the face insert...........then just strip the white from the top/center.  Once that is done, just clean up the surfaces, polish what you want and bead blast the rest and fire up the torch.

It's not without risk, but if you can get everything broken down clean, it would be a kick to see it torched.  IMHO, the face removal will be the biggest challenge, then getting the sole plate to come off without any damage.  Yeah, doing it on your own putter is a much better option than a refinisher tackling this one for the first time.

Ive restored 100s of scotty cameron putters over the last several years so im comfortable with the process just remocing the badging is never easy. Anyone out there have a really good method? my guess is boiling would be the best.

how did you separate the bading to eliminate any chance for damaging?

I am in the process of stripping my Spider now to try and torch it.  10 inches of snow on the ground in KC so project time

Also, why did you decide to leave the weights and sole plate on while stripping? Any issues that would prevent removal?

beginner mistake! I should of took the insert out and plate off before striping.. it took the thin carbon fiber off the plate smh.. I used citristrip to strip it

Were you able to remove the insert intact? Or was it already damaged from the stripping process? 
 

Asking because I’ve been looking into this project for a while and I’m trying to figure out anything that might save me some trouble down the road.

from what I can tell the insert is still fine.. I’m going to try and use a heat gun and try and remove the insert to try and re use it.. going to use a heat gun to heat up the putter around the insert to see if I can remove it without damaging it.. I will update once I give it a try

Found someone on Instagram that was doing this in the UK and took a blind shot to see how it would turn out. Safe to say it turned out excellent. About as close to a Rory copy as you can get.

When you stripped the paint from the top of the putter (the true path portion) did the finish under it match the rest of the putter? I am trying to do this without the torching effect and am hoping that the finish under the pain matches the rest of the putter. Or would I need to citristrip the entire thing?

I can see some torch marks on the top right, which would drive me crazy, but it looks like a decent job none the less.

If you don't do the correct prep on any torch finish it will be uneven and fade very fast.

How long did it take to get it back? And what was cost?
