Great job Brian.  I am about to pull the trigger on a set and you have thrown a spanner in the works.  Both club set ups look awesome.  Love the blue grips & bespoke ferrules too.  Thanks for posting the video.

Those ferrules are Mizuno Icon!

Well, I guess I'm on the team now with all you other club junkies.

I needed to clear out the garage a bit and wanted a solid backup set. Hit everything in the store expecting to leave with last years P790s.

Never hit Mizunos and made the mistake of grabbing the pretty black 7iron off the rack.

They're in the bag now. Was really, really surprised.

Any experiences with the gap wedge? With the PW 43*, figure you’d need an 11 iron.

Haven't played them as I just picked them up but I put 10 balls through every club atleast to get my launch angle, ball speed, etc. Every club was 3-4mph different, right angles and with consistent gapping.

The clubs are strong so that PW at 43* had me scratching my head too. Each club is just a little longer than my traditional lofted set and more so at the top end. I've never ever hit a 5i that far in my life, then I saw the loft. I don't see a need for the 4i which is probably why they only sent the stores 5-GW but I may still pick it up.

My current set's PW is 46 and I play a 50/54/60 behind it. The Gap in the Mizunos is solid and I'm basically looking at it just as a full or 3/4 club.

Going to add a 54.10C or 54.12S / 58.08C behind it and go.

I’ve been playing Mizunos 245, then HMP the last year and now this year with the Forged Black. I go from Pw, to set Gw, then 54 and 60. I like hitting full, 3/4, 1/2 shots from 120 and under so the gaps don’t bother me.

Apparently my OCD kicked in again and I needed to finish the bag.

Took the kids to the range tonight to trade in more old wedges and left with a Vokey SM10 54.10S & 58.08M in black.

Hit all the irons just to discount double check.

Smoke show. Still the farthest and straightest I've ever hit a 5iron. The DG115 S400s just work for me and that blows my mind. I've tried every shaft and this is off the rack doing things.

Yes, I am happy.

Picked up my set last week but haven’t hit them yet. Unfortunately the swing weights vary 5 points throughout the set in no particular progression from the factory build. So I will be pulling them apart and adjusting them accordingly.

Your post made me curious so I went and checked mine on my cheap scale and they are all within a point of each other (D3-4) from 5 iron to 58* wedge. And checked the lengths and play off a 38.5" 5 iron as requested.

Now I ordered them 5,6 @ D2 7,8,9 @D3 and the wedges @ D5 so not really to spec but at +.50" not bad.

No way to check L/L which were ordered 2 up 5-G and 1 up on the wedges at stock lofts.

When I ordered through club champion they told me that they’d likely be all over the place as everything is basically just an assembly line these days. Though this certainly is probably part of their sales pitch to have them rebuild everything, they were in fact right. With an 8 iron at C9 and PW at D3 I just know myself well enough that I’d start blaming bad shots because I have that info in my brain. I just want to start this season with as many variable eliminated up front as possible.

Here’s an update after rebuilding my set. I don’t know how these head weights compare to spec but I thought mizuno was always ~7g increase per head as you go down the set? My KBS Tour V 100s did weight in much more consistent than expected with no more than a 2g variance throughout the 6 shafts and 4 of them weighed exactly the same at 156g with the grip on them.

Since this is the internet in 2025 I also want to be clear that this isn’t a shot at Mizuno and I’m not complaining. I enjoy club building when I get the opportunity to do it. It’s always a little heartbreaking though tearing down a brand new factory built set before you even hit them but, I guess that’s what most pro club builders do too. Just wasn’t going to pay what CC wanted to do it. Ouch. I just wanted to provide my info for others.

Just got my set today, black 5-PW. Bear with me because this is golfwrx. Going to test them against my p770 ‘24, which I love. Was hoping for more distance without having to strengthen lofts and create a digging issue. Also hoping for some solid forged feel, although the new p770 are so damn soft on center. Going to h2h these on the range. 7 iron and 9 iron so I can see where they land.

Played zx5 in both models for a few seasons. Liked them, the results were very good, they are not bad looking. They always had a clicky feel and sound. It didn’t bother me that much due to the results on mishits.

Then,

Just hit my set of jpx925 forged at the range. The forgiveness is excellent. The soles are thin and they feel very good. Distance was very consistent, mishits still go.

I won’t be going back to the srixons.

I ordered them one degree weak/one degree upright with dg mid 115 s300 shafts

Playing a round next week hopefully. I will report back using non range balls and not off a mat.

I forgot to come back to this.

played a round with these and they felt off to me. Couldn’t figure out why. Turns out the swing weights were all around C9-D0

I had custom ordered them with DG 115 mid shafts  and did not specify that I wanted them D2-D3.

I am also surprised Mizuno would let them go out the door this light unless it was requested this way.

I then traded them in and am demoing other 7 irons from TM, Callaway, Titleist .

Not happy with how they arrived, I will not go with Mizuno again.

Played a bunch of rounds in my sim and these are feeling great.

Weighed mine on my digital swing scale and they surprisingly were all built to a very accurate progressive spec. More importantly, total weight was tight with little variation.

DG Mid 125 S400

Club - SW - In/g - TTL g - Bal Point

5i - D1.3 - 6113 - 415 - 28.76

6i - D1.9 - 6147 - 420 - 28.64

7i - D2.2 - 6155 - 428 - 28.47

8i - D2.3 - 6167 - 434 - 28.20

9i - D2.6 - 6183 - 439 - 28.10

P - D2.8 - 6194 - 448 - 28.00

G - D3.2 - 6205 - 451 - 27.87

Having built a number of sets - if I had custom made these myself I’d be  happy with those numbers.

I also went to my local shop to see if it was worth replacing the Gap wedge (48) with a 48/50 T1 Wedge.

I was getting basically the same distance, launch, and spin numbers between both clubs. I didn’t really see any reason to make the change for what will mostly be a full or 3/4 swing club for me.

54 & 58 thereafter seem like the right setup.

I did notice some inconsistencies with my 7iron and took it in to get it looked over. Needed to adjust lie 0.5* up then back to normal. Everything else was fine per the numbers above.

I took the demo clubs off the rack so that club might have seen some hacks before I grabbed them. 5 minute fix.

Testing out my set on the simulator. I ordered mine 1 degree weak and 0.5 upright.  The long irons are awesome , and the gapping between clubs seems solid except for the PW. The PW is spinning 10,000 plus and maybe 3-5 yards longer than the GW. I have never spun a PW that hard before and its leaving me a 20-25 gap between PW and 9 iron. Ill have to get the lofts check when  I get a chance. Ill be curious to see what the swing weights are as well. They feel light.
