VJ and Pernice are long time great friends from their days on the PGA Tour. Pernice was seen by some as VJ's mouthpiece in the 2000's when Tiger was smashing everybody.

the chatter w.r.t. Maltbie/ Harrington spat = along the lines of Maltbie is "protecting the field" by not actively helping Padraig to look for the ball 

(but also wouldn't willingly withhold info from Padraig, if Maltbie knew where the ball was by virtue of the TV cameras/ comms with TV producer)
