Cobra King 3DP Tour

Recommended Posts

im withholding my overall judgement on these irons until I can actually hit them on grass and play a round with them. So far in the simulator these dont feel great off the face, especially compared to my Mizuno Pro 243's. The 243's are the only irons that have lasted a full season in my bag over the past 10 years so it's going to take quite a lot for the 3DP's to take over that spot.

So far they are more forgiving (which is why im taking the chance on them) but also lower spinning. I dont need distance but the slight bump in ball speed and a touch lower spin are pretty fun to see on a monitor. I naturally have a high ball flight and have no issues holding greens so even at 500rpm less it should not affect anything on course

equal distance

3DP much more forgiving. King Tour are pretty forgiving but the 3DP's really shine in the forgiveness department and to me is the main feature of what makes this iron do desirable. Low strikes are where the 3DP truly separate from other irons. It holds its line and distance extremely well.

King Tour's feel miles better than 3DP. The 3DP are not a great feeling iron in my opinion. They're not off putting enough to immediately dissuade anyone from trying them but I can say they dont feel as good as I was hoping.

Interesting because I found the exact opposite. The 3DP feel absolutely incredible to me and the forgiveness across the whole face is just stupid. These will definitely make their way into my bag this year.

Agree with this... To each their own, but the feel of the 3DP is pretty incredible.

Shout out to Discount Dan's. Prompt service & nailed my unusual spec requests. Heading to the range this afternoon. In case anyone's interested, here are some comparison photos to my PXG 0311T Gen 3 (7i vs 7i). VERY similar sizes - Cobra top line just a bit thicker. Sole & blade length are nearly identical.

I have been playing the Cobra Tours for a little over a year.  They are great and I absolutely love them.  I have gotten a chance to hit the LIMIT3D and 3DP(they are pretty much the same iron).

I have NOT gotten a chance to hit them with the same shaft as my gamers so these are extrapolations from guessing in comparison.

Tours - a smidge larger, feel great.  Forgiveness is very good, spin a smidge higher.

3DP(LIMIT3D) - a smidge smaller, feel OK, forgiveness is a smidge better, spin a smidge lower.

For how small the 3DP are they are EXTREMELY forgiving, they spin a tad less than the ZX7 series, and the Cobra Tour spin a smidge more than the ZX7.  If you are borderline too low spin and the ZX7 or ZX5 aren't for you I don't see either of these irons being for you.  Are they as low spin as Forged Tec's, P790's or i530's?  Nope, but they spun less than cobra Cb's, or T100's or Mizuno Cb's(excluding JPX lineup).

If you are ok with a smidge less spin, but don't want the fully hollow low spin irons I feel like you have three really good choices currently, listed in terms of forgiveness, but they are very close.

Has anyone compared the 3DPs directly to the newest TM P770s?  I have hit both, and really liked both, but not at the same time.  3DP was inside and P770 was outdoors.  Plus those sessions were about a month apart.  It's difficult to find places that have both irons, as well as have hitting bays outside.  I try not to buy anything anymore unless I have hit them outside.

Looking to hear about turf interaction, forgiveness around the face, launch, spin, etc.  I'm normally a little low on launch and spin, so I'm not opposed to weakening lofts a little bit.

I’ve hit both.

i think they are pretty equal all thing considered with one exception, spin.  The p770 spin measurable more for me, to the tune of 4-600 revs.  The 3dp cobra are the lowest spin iron of it size I’ve ever hit, even lower than original zx7.

I’m on the fence between the 925 forged and the Cobra tour, which head offers more spin and forgiveness?

This may or may not help you.’

I am trying to buy a set of 925 Forged currently.  The 925 is more forgiving low, and the Cobra Tours I find more forgiving on the toe.  I have not had a chance to directly compare the two with the same shafts and same lofts, to get a truly equal check on spin.

If I had to guess when comparing only the something around 30* of loft in both sets they will be very close.  The 935 I hit had a 7 iron with 30* of loft, and was spinning for me roughly 6300.  My Cobra Tour set at 32* is spinning around 6700.  This is with completely different shafts(MMT 105s with the 925 and Axiom 105x in the Cobras).  So it is completely a guess on my part of how the spin will actually be.

Thanks, sound pretty comparable to me, my miss is usually toe side. I’m waiting for some feedback on the GD Raune, my next choice is the axiom. Had the mmt 105s in my OG ZX 7s, not enough spin with that combo! What do you think of axiom compared to the mmts?

The ZX7 is notoriously low spin for a non hollow iron.  I am a higher spin player so I can even use P790's without much problem.  My current backup set are a blended set of Zx7 and Zx5's(OG).

When I compared the Axiom 105x, Recoil F5, and MMT 105TX, and a couple of others while trialing graphite I did not find any of them to move spin all that much.  You have variance of strike, head design, and ball, that all change spin way more than a shaft will.

Ball is the most important.  Find what iron combo (within reason) that you hit the most solid, fit your golf ball to them.  Ball for driver does not really change much, where ball makes a difference is with iron and wedge shots and around the green.

Now some of this is strike dependant too.  These three iron shafts in my Cobras and ZX7's gave me the most solid shots, and typically more solid means more spin(or more natural spin), also the Axiom likes to go straight to a slight cut for me, which increases spin, the MMT straight to cut and recoil straight to draw.

All that to say the Recoil had the highest average, followed by the Axiom, followed by the MMT.  My recollection was the Recoil was at 6600, the Axiom at 6500 and the MMT at 6450(rough numbers).  I had spin numbers for others but because my strikes were not as good, I do not view those spin numbers as valid.

I was able to do all of this with a MLM2 Pro on the golf course over the course of some late afternoon rounds on a flat fairway(not peppering a green with iron shots).  The numbers were tested with my two gamer balls(MaxFli Tour X and Srixon Diamond) and the testing was in early spring/summer last year, the temp was about 80* with no wind.

Hope this helps, I am not sure how valid it is, because I am dropping down to S flex in my soon new to me irons, and even though my miss is toe side as well I decided to not just re-shaft my Cobra's but to get new irons(925 F) and shafts.  According to arccos my 7 iron goes 180, but I feel like I have to muscle every shot I hit with the 105x's so I am dropping down a flex.

Im curious how you went about ordering 8-P. I’m considering ordering 7-P. But the Cobra website doesn't allow that. They have full sets, and single irons. Under single irons, they have 6 through PW greyed out. Only 3, 4, 5, or GW can be ordered. Appreciate any help. Thx!

My set arrived today. Wow is right. I’ve played and tested an awful lot of players irons the last decade. These are incredible. Great feel, great looks, exceptional ball speeds, decent spin numbers, great height/ descent numbers, with simply ludicrous levels of forgiveness. If you’re any way interested, go ahead and get them. They are that good.

Played first full 18 today with my set of 3DPs, and color me impressed... Came from T150 5-PW & T200 4i combo, which I loved.

As people have noted, the forgiveness in these irons is ridiculous. Hit one off the toe and distance loss was absurdly minimal. Feel great out of the middle but you can still feel if you miss the ball but wouldn't know it from the result. Turf interaction is very good. If you catch one high off the face out of rough it's not a miracle club so you will see distance loss but same can be said for most clubs.

The ONLY thing I need to still assess is if the 4i flys far enough compared to my old T200. If the answer is no, could see myself picking up a Ping iCrossover 4 iron, but that is it.

Has anyone had any flier issues with these? I have the LIMIT3D version and am finding the 8-9-P specifically to be pretty hot and more with distance variation than I would like. It's also distinctly possible that I suck, so take this with a grain of salt, but this weekend I found my 9 iron going between 150-165 which I don't love.

Probably due to it being a very low spin iron head.
