I can totally relate to your predicament.  I am sometimes in your boat with my current gamers which makes me sometimes go back to my Srixon Z-UTI 4 iron. IT helps me with my desired distance for my 4 iron.

Going back to srixon irons after 5 years, prior set was Z945 which I used for a little over 5 years.  I went with Zxi4 for 4 iron and ZXi7 5-PW.  I don't yet what shaft to put on the 4i, with the 5-Pw is Modus 115.  Exciting times ahead!

I also thought about going with the ZXI4 in the 4 iron. Let me know how that works once you get it shafted and hit it.

I’m a + cap, high swing speed, good ball striker and I went ZXi5 in the 4i/5i. They’re just too good. It’s like cheating almost. Just have to consider how many time a round you hit a long iron and what it’s used for. For me, it’s maybe once a round and it’s usually into a par 5 so I need height. They look good, feel good, perform amazing so why not use the extra help. Lowry has the 5’s in the long irons, there’s not a person on here that’s hits it half as well as he does, so there’s no way one can justify not going with them.

Did you modify the lofts of your ZXi5s to better blend with your ZXi7s? Or do you play the ZXi5s at their standard lofts?

Also, do the ZXi5s have noticeably more offset than the 7s or pretty similar?

2 HDCP and have the same combo. I play the 4 at 22* and 5 at 25* to align with standard ZXI7 loft mix.  Hard to see a ton of difference in the offset comparing the two but man the 4/5 are good.  Whole set is good, really good but considering not many 4/5 shots in a round I have hit some really good ones.  To the point giving strong consideration to ZXI Utility  2 or 3 iron and replace hybrid with it.  .

Went 1 degree weak in the 5i and stock everything else. And I believe the offset numbers are the same on the 5 and 7. If not exact it’s not noticeable. To me at least.

I play a combo and I love it 4-5 zxi5 and 6 to p zxi7. Bent the zxi5 one degree weak and you're in for a great iron game.

Does anyone combo these in the short end of the set between the 8 and the 9? I hit dont like the larger sole on the 9/w but I like the zx5 through the rest of the set. I dont see any combo sets set up like this.

I've split mine at 8i - so ZXi5 5-7, ZXi7 8-PW.

Sure you could break it at 9i if you really wanted, but didn't see that as a default split on most websites. I decided mine at a fitting and I'm stilling waiting on delivery! I could hit the ZXi7 7i fine, just went for slightly more forgiveness for longer approaches.

Seems a very odd way and reason to split a set.

I agree that its odd. Thats why I wanted to see if anyone else has done it.  Most comments I see are that they needed the extra forgiveness in the 5-6 or needed the extra ball speed in 5-7. But the places that do fittings around me only use a 7 iron. That hasn't seemed to help with me.

So I built a set if zx5 and my king tours, same shaft, grip and weight and initially took them to the range. 5-7 were easy. I was hitting the zx5 much more consistently. The 8 was much closer but I still felt it was better in the zx5  The 9, w and gap i hit the king Tours consistently better. This was done over about a month both on the range and on the course and it isnt close. Better contact and dispersion. It may be mental but the results are apparent.

Considering doing the same as the 8 iron is considered a scoring wedge in some circles. Some extra help with 7-5 would be beneficial for me.

@drvrwdge summed it up perfectly I have had the original ZX5/7's and now have the MKII version. I have always done a mixed set, 4 and 5 iron in the 5's and everything else in the 7's.  It's a great blend of forgiveness and playability.  The one question I would ask you since you say you are a former low single digit handicapper, why is the handicap gone up, besides lack of playing, is it the driver is not as consistent? Is it short game? or is it iron play?  If  you are still hitting it solid with the irons you will be fine with a mixed set

I am a 8 handicap, looking at 4-7 in the Zxi5 and 8-Pw in the Zxi7.  Did you change the lofts going from a 24 degree 5 iron to a 28 degree 6? 4 is a bigger gap at that end of the bag? I was worried 31 degree 7 to 36 degree 8 might be a big gap?

That would be my split. Minus the 4iron. I stop my irons at 5iron.

No I did not. I really like how the gapping is between my 5 at 24* and 6 iron at 28*, its worked for me for both sets that I have had and I will continue to keep a 4* gap between those clubs. I do think a 5* between 7 and 8 iron might be a bit much but its easy to bend
