Axiom 125 vs Project X 6.5 vs Accra iseries red 130

Hey all long time Project X 6.5 user. As i get older I still love the shaft but it may be getting a bit much for me.

broke my thumb in July which is fine now but SS down a bit.

cruising altitude was typically 95mph 6 iron - now 92ish

thinking of trying axiom 125x, maybe project X 6.0 or 6.5 SSx1, really curious with iseries red but it’s 120 M4 flex vs 130 M5 flex. Not sure i want to go back to a 130 gram shaft

A few questions I have:

Does axiom feel more or less stiff than project x 6.5?

any iseries users way in?

those that went from Projext X 6.5 to 6.0 are you happy with the move?

appreciate any insight

thanks

You could soft step the 6.5s to get 6.1 est

Generally, graphite is able to play stiffer at lower weights. Taking the importance of shaft weight out of the swing, a 105x Axiom will swing with a similar stiff feel and dispersion as a 120g class X flex steel shaft.

I've seen many players go with 105x in graphite when they used to play 120x in irons. I think this is where a graphite bias of helping joint pain and gaining a MPH or two comes from. Graphite is able to layer more stability in a lower weight shaft compared to steel.

In numerous instances, high-end lighter weight composite will feel stiffer than steel, due to weight; they take adjustment time.

I play a lot of golf, and been fighting off Father Time robbing distance, which led to experimenting with composite, to regain distances, and less wear and tear.  Also, my fast tempo is better suited for mid-high bend which is difficult to find in composite, vs normal mid-bend.

Years ago I played 6.5, then in 2006 to PX 6.0 (great shaft), played them for 15+yrs, before moving to composite Steelfiber i110cw in 2i-P, and i125cw in 52 & 58 for 2 yrs before switching to MMT 125S; another outstanding shaft, for nearly 2yrs.  It's been six years playing composite and taken me a while to find the right shaft that talks to my hands.  Last Sept finally tripped into Fujikura's mid-launch low spin Pro 95i & 115i Tour S shafts which are in my T100 3i-9i.

IMO I wouldn't suggest matching the weight of composite shafts to the weight of your PX shafts, especially if your SS has slowed down.  The feel of composite is different vs steel.  Look into Fujikura's 115i Tour X, which is 117g; probably appreciate their price too. 🙂  I checked out Axiom, but I never got serious and near me, Accra is not easily had.

Axiom 125X will be significantly stouter than Project X 6.5 so I'd recommend Project X 6.0 and keep it simple.

I'm surprised to hear that. PX in general is one of the stiffest by weight shafts out there. I haven't hit the Axiom 125X but did have the 105X in a 4 iron briefly and it felt similar overall stiffness as DG 120 S300. I play PX 6.0 in my irons right now for reference. I'm pretty curious to try the 125X based on this, just can't find them easily.

I’ve hit the axiom 125x and agree they are plenty stiff.

I think flex progressions or slope through the set plays a role.  The 125x kind of feels the same flex in 9 irons as it does 6 iron.  The px6.5 to feel different in 9( very linear) vs 6 (more noticeable load and release)

Definitely not one of your options but I went from Project X 6.5 to KBS $-Taper S+ and have never been happier.  I played 6.5 for as long as I can remember, it kept spin down and had a great flight but when I wasn't swinging my best they were always punishing.  After moving to a state with a true winter layoff and a having a couple kids, getting my swing primed got harder.

They aren't super stout, flight is maybe a smidge higher but spin stayed down and I don't have to fight them when I'm not at my best.  They are a bit harder to come by when ordering a set of irons than the traditional R/S/X flexes but I've never been happier. I went graphite for a while, but as others mentioned above, graphite is just as, if not more stout at lighter weights so that didnt help me out.

Funny you both say that i have a set of 3DP tours with $-taped 130 about to reshaft them and that’s the motive of this thread

years ago i played $-taper but the counterbalanced nature i can’t feel the club head the way i want to.

Its so smooth which i like, hard to find the HT versions anymore but perhaps that would be a good fit in 125/130

I don't prefer the higher balance point on them either but it only took 2g or so tip weights to bring the swing weight back to similar to PX

Same concept as the HT…makes sense

I think the HT might have a slightly different profile as well, to accommodate. But I have not hit them. The EI curve appears to be more similar to X100 though.

I’ve got a set of $ taper 125 ht and they are more tip stiff than the standard 125.    Id say a x100 is a good comparison.

Well I have played Project X 6.5 for years and when I hit the Axiom 125X last year I wasn't a fan but for me they never felt as stout as the Project X 6.5 but everyone reacts differently when they swing a golf shaft which is why fitting is so important.

I also agree the Axiom 125x doesn’t feel as stiff as the PX 6.5. Could be the higher balance point of the axiom as well. But everyone is different!

Just wondering whether the Accra TZI that you mention is the TZI 115i CW and is it the same shaft that Ian hit in a Club Champion video featuring tour weight graphite iron shafts, I can vaguely recall Ian saying that the Accra swingweighted really heavy and that he never hit it great.

Any Accra iseries Red users weigh in?

im very interested…temped to build a single club

I have gone from PX 6.5 to iseries Red 120s this winter.  Limiting testing thus far but I am enjoying the feeling of them vs the px. Little bit more feel in the handle. Spin has not spiked up at all

The club champion video is great and I agree with Ian's evaluation of DG handle and PX lower.

Yes very much loving them. I am finding then easy to work up and down and my dispersion left to right is improved.  Never really feel like I have to work at feeling the shaft like you sometimes do with the PX

For anyone interested,  Axiom 125x are definitely a stout shaft, and off a tee they are great.  Same with a 105 x.  The problem is if you're in the rough and have to gouge out a shot, they definitely give way compared to steel.  LA GOLF Bryson series is the only composite shaft I've tried that will dig out of a bad lie as well as steel, if not better.  If all lies were on short grass, composite would be great.  They just don't have the low torque like steel, with the exception of the Bryson series.

project x 6.5 has 1.6 torque, DGx100 have 1.5 torque and axiom 125x has between 1.4 and 1.2 torque.

This is a good example of why measured torque can be miss leading.  When it comes to feel for the majority of the px is going to feel the stiffest and axiom will have the most sensation of load
