Replacing Driver Adapter Screw - Callaway

My trusty old Mavrik is getting creaky.  At the top of the swing, I'll hear little crunchies.  The shaft and adapter are new and no issues in other heads.

 

My suspicion is the driver's adapter screw is a bit old and doesn't grip well anymore.  I bought some replacements, but no idea how to get them out and re-install without breaking it.

 

What's the fix?

This tool will do the trick nicely. Use the solid end of it to push the old screw out of the club head. It’s only held in by a rubber washer. The other end of the tool will hold the washer in place while you insert the new screw.

 

If you don’t want to buy this you can use a larger hex key or bolt to push the old screw out. Anything just smaller than the hosel will work. To install the new screw put the rubber washer on top of the shaft adapter, carefully put the club head on and insert/tighten the screw. Unscrew it and remove the head to make sure the rubber washer is on the screw and didn’t fall out.

If the screw is still tight (you are unable to get it any tighter) after hearing the creaking - then it's unlikely that the problem is the screw.

 

If you find you have to re-tighten the screw frequently, then yes it could be the screw connection working loose.   But more likely contamination of some sort and not wear.   A simple but proper cleaning is likely all you would need.   Although you'd have to clean both the screw and the threads in the adapter.

 

Loose plastic ferrules have been known to "creak" in some cases (new or old).

It might be as simple as replacing the washer.

All you need to do to replace the screw and washer is put pressure on the washer from inside the hosel & use the wrench to unscrew/separate the screw from the washer for most brands.

 

There is virtually no way you could "Break the club" when attempting to replace the screw or washers.

Bic Stic pen with the ink tip removed. Push out the old screw with the base, put a bit of vaseline on the open end and place the washer there, insert into the head and hold the washer tight against the base screw hole. Insert the new screw (after checking that it is the exact same length and size) and screw it in while holding the washer in tightly. I'm sure the tool works well too though.

There’s a rubber washer that retains the screw in the head. I wouldn’t put Vaseline in there, it degrades rubber.

Not to mention a high chance of contaminating the screw threads.
