Hogan Precision 2 Wood Refinish

Wanted to share a recent effort to refinish a pretty beat up Hogan Precision 2 wood.

Overall, not perfect, but pleased with how it turned out. Instead of repainting it black, worked hard to remove as much of the paint as I could, then sand and bleach. Ended up going with a dark brown stain. Followed the excellent Dave Wood guide

Nice job! I have a Joe Powell driver that needs some work. Maybe I’ll mail it to you for a touch up.

This is a Tommy Armour Silver Scot 693 that I cleaned up over the winter.

Also a matching 2 wood with some nice grain below the old varnish.

Finally a Toney Penna Jupiter Slugger which unfortunately i didn't picture "before" but was in a sorry state visually but very sound structurally.

Fun to see old persimmon 2 woods, or “brassie” that my dad called them. With it so hard to find a wooden driver that fit right, lots of 2 woods were used off the tee when I was growing up. I had a golfcraft Dick Mayer that I loved until it got neck cracks. Nowadays all driver heads feel the same, so much easier for fitting.

Beautifully done! Did you use a semi-gloss poly finish on these? Spray or did you dip?

Very nice to say, but there are far more qualified/capable refinishers out there!

The 693's are a satin finish and the Penna is gloss, all sprayed with 6 coats with 24 hours between coats.

The Penna took a slight orange peel on the final coat. Can't work out why as the final coat was very thin and I usually associate orange peel with too heavy a coat.

The 693's would have benefitted from grain filler.

All experimental and lessons learned.

I am not keen on dipping with my normal approach being 6 coats of 50:50 varnish and spirit / thinners applied by brush. If the coats are thin enough, brush marks are not a problem.

I am not seeking perfection just presentable playable woods.
